Chapter 554 He Explained

Victoria asked Alexander, "What should I wish for?"

She thought he was being a bit too nosy.

Alexander shielded the candle wick and, noticing her annoyance, said, "Don't wish for anything about love. Go for something career-related or anything else."

She wished Brett and Eloise long, healthy lives that night.

Wishing for career success wasn't a bad idea either.

She hoped everything she aimed for would succeed, benefiting everyone involved.

Finally, Victoria blew out the candles. Alexander looked at her with deep tenderness. "Happy birthday, Victoria."

Surprised by his sincerity, she softly replied, "Thank you."

But after a while, he was still holding the cake. She couldn't help but ask, "Are we supposed to eat a piece of cake now?"

"Of course," Alexander said, picking up a fork and offering her a small piece.

Seeing the cake wasn't large, Victoria took a bite.

She glanced at him again, hoping he'd hurry up.

Alexander asked softly, "Is it good?"

Victoria tasted it carefully before answering, "It's okay."

Alexander simply said, "I made it myself in the office kitchen."

He always remembered her birthday and didn't want anyone else at the party.

Just the two of them were enough.

Looking into his eyes, Victoria felt that unrealistic illusion again. He wanted to be alone with her, missed her, and...

Realizing she was overthinking, Victoria quickly lowered her head and asked, "What's next?"

Alexander poured some red wine.

Victoria took it and clinked glasses with him.

After a bath, she couldn't keep up the pretense, suddenly becoming rational and calm.

She slowly drank a large glass.

Alexander did the same.

Subsequently, they remained seated there awkwardly, gripping their wine glasses in a silence-laden atmosphere.

"Um..." Victoria wanted him to help put down the glass, but he suddenly asked, "Are the strawberries good?"

"Yes, they are," Victoria said sincerely.

The strawberries were really good.

"Edward ran 435 miles today for these strawberries," Alexander said, smiling, then put down her glass and brought over the plate of strawberries. He picked one up and asked, "Want one?"

Victoria instinctively took it, thinking, 'If I die tonight, it won't be because he kills me, but because I'll be too full.'

Alexander picked up the last strawberry, then noticed her holding it without eating and asked, "Why aren't you eating?"

Victoria suddenly asked, "If I die from overeating, will you bury me with my parents?"

"What?"

Victoria said seriously, "I want to be with my parents."

The subtle ambiguity vanished. Alexander squinted and asked, "You want to be with your parents in the future, huh?"

Victoria nodded. "That's right."

"But you're my wife," he suddenly said.

Victoria stared at him blankly and said, "But you're already remarried."

Alexander stuffed a big strawberry into his mouth, chewing slowly.

Victoria looked at him, confused.

After finishing the strawberry, he looked at her coldly and asked, "Have you never thought about being buried with me?"

Victoria thought, 'Being buried with him? I don't deserve it.'

Seeing her blank expression, Alexander felt even worse. He put down the plate and was about to lie down, but seeing her still holding the strawberry, he couldn't help but ask, "If you don't want it, you can give it to me."

Victoria immediately handed it to him.

Alexander felt a pang of sadness. "Do you despise everything I give you?"

Victoria replied calmly, "While that's not entirely wrong, this time I'm just too full."

Alexander stared at her for almost half a minute before lowering his head and eating the strawberry right from her hand.

Victoria's hand trembled.

He seemed to have touched her fingertips just now.

Later, they lay on the same bed with the lights off.

The room was so quiet that it seemed they could hear each other's heartbeat and breathing.

After a long time, Alexander's deep voice broke the silence. "Although Edward bought the strawberries, I paid for them."

"Got it," she answered with her back to him, closing her eyes.

'Got it?' Alexander stared at her from behind, frowning deeply, thinking, 'Did I say it too lightly? She seems to have completely missed my point.'

The fact was that Edward didn't want to take the money, treating it as a gift for Victoria, but Alexander wouldn't allow Edward to buy food for Victoria. He insisted that Edward take the money.

A few minutes later, Alexander called her again, "Victoria."

Victoria didn't plan to respond, pretending to be asleep.

"I didn't sleep with Isabella," he continued.

Victoria kept telling herself to stay calm and not respond to him. Because once she responded, they wouldn't know how long they would talk.

She didn't want to waste her energy on his and Isabella's matters.

But Alexander's body gradually moved closer.

Upon contact, Victoria promptly sensed a heat emanating from her back that was alien to her, accompanied by the pressure of solid muscles against her.

She held her breath, trying to keep her back as far from him as possible.

But Alexander's arm easily wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer.

"That wedding dress was a replica." His low words made Victoria's mind buzz.

'A replica wedding dress? What does that mean?' she thought.

She felt that she couldn't understand such simple words.

Alexander explained seriously behind her, "Our wedding dress has long been on the island. Isabella had a photo of your wedding dress and had someone make a seemingly identical one."

"Besides you, I have no other woman, I promise," he added.

Victoria was stunned.

Alexander still didn't hear her response, so he turned her over to face him in the dim light, "Can't you trust me?"

Victoria just stared at him blankly, thinking, 'Does Alexander want to tell me that he is the victim? Even if the wedding dress was a replica, how would he explain what happened in bed? How did Isabella end up in our house? And what was with the condoms?'

Besides, Victoria was doing well on her own now. She had no desire to encounter another individual who would subject her emotions to such turmoil.

She remembered those days when she saw someone jump off a building and witnessed a poor girl die in a car accident. There was no way they could be together.

Victoria's gaze slowly lowered, and she said hoarsely, "It doesn't matter anymore."

Alexander continued, "Isabella drugged my drink, and I hallucinated, thinking she was you. But it was brief, and I realized later..."

"What?" Victoria was stunned, thinking, 'What did it matter if he realized later?'

Alexander said seriously, "Do you remember I told you I haven't hit a woman before?"
