Chapter 336 Uncontrollable Worry

"""Victoria, aren't you a tad too carefree?"" His words hung in the air, unanswered, prompting him to repeat his question.

Victoria attempted a response, but instead, the line went dead. Later that night, they reconvened at The Harrington Mansion, the ancestral home of the Harrington family. Alexander made his return at the stroke of nine. In the master bedroom, his mother and grandmother sat vigil by the bed, his grandmother positioned in the middle, holding a bowl of cherries. ""Promise us you won't keep quiet when you're sick in the future,"" she said. ""Your late-night call frightened me and me. A fever can be a minor ailment or a serious condition. You shouldn't have to endure it alone when we have help at home."" The old lady and Arabella were the epitome of concern. ""The fever has subsided after the IV,"" Victoria reassured them with a smile, not wanting them to worry unduly.

""She might spike a fever again tonight. When will that boy be back? What social event could possibly be more important than his wife's health?"" The old lady grumbled. ""I'll give him a call."" ""No, Mom."" The hand poised to pluck a cherry from the bowl immediately stilled, halting the other's reach for the phone. ""You can't be alone at night, in case the fever returns. You need to take medicine immediately,"" Arabella reasoned. ""I'm fine, really,"" Victoria quickly interjected. She had no desire to share her sickbed with him.

""Being fine is not enough. Call him quickly and ask him to come back soon,"" the old lady urged Arabella. ""No need, I'm already back."" Alexander's voice echoed faintly from the doorway.

All eyes turned towards the door, and Victoria's heart skipped a beat. ""Why are you back now?"" ""General Zhang loves drinking too much, he wouldn't let me leave,"" Alexander replied, straightening and making his way into the room.

Victoria held a cherry in her hand, uncertain whether to eat it or not. As he neared, her heart pounded faster, leaving her unsure of her next move. Alexander, however, breezed past her nonchalantly, pausing to ask, ""Feeling better?"" ""Yes."" Her voice was slightly stiff. Alexander's chest tightened as he took in her flushed face. He turned to his mother and grandmother, ""Mrs. Chen, it's getting late. Why don't you and Grandma go back to rest?"" ""You realize it's late now?"" Arabella retorted, but immediately rose to her feet. ""If you hadn't come back, we wouldn't have stayed up so late. I'll leave Victoria in your care. If you don't look after her well, I'll hold you accountable."" ""Alright, goodnight, grandma,"" Alexander promised, his smile bidding her goodnight.

The old lady muttered under her breath at his urgent expression. ""Darling, we'll retire to our room now. Goodnight."" ""Goodnight, Mom, goodnight, Grandma,"" Victoria responded quickly, her smile unwavering.

As the elders exited, the polite smile on her face gradually faded, replaced by a calm gaze directed at Alexander. Only when the door closed did Alexander return her gaze, moving closer and leaning in. Victoria immediately shifted aside. Alexander merely glanced at her indifferently, then reached for a cherry from the bowl in her arms. Victoria's face flushed a deeper shade of red in embarrassment.

Alexander popped a cherry into his mouth, savoring it slowly. After a moment, he frowned and muttered, ""Oops."" Victoria looked up at him, his grimace causing her to worry. ""The cherry pit went down the wrong way,"" he explained, his tone serious.

Victoria held her breath, silently vowing to remain composed. Suddenly, Alexander smiled and sat on the edge of the bed. His dark eyes bored into hers as he leaned in, his hand naturally finding the back of her neck, and rested his forehead against hers."
