Chapter 648 Being Played
Isabella was stunned, staring blankly as Felix went to the driver's seat.
The umbrella was outside the car, and she was getting drenched.
After Felix got in the car, he respectfully reported to Eloise, "Mrs. Harrington, Ms. Montgomery is here."
"Ms. Montgomery? Isn't she that bitch Isabella who desperately wants to marry into our Harrington family?" Eloise said angrily.
"Yes, do you want to see her? She's standing outside now," Felix explained with a forced smile.
Eloise glanced outside the car and then snorted, "No rush, ask her what she's doing here first."
Eloise's words were loud enough for Isabella to hear from the driver's side. She didn't feel ashamed; after all, many people had called her a bitch.
Felix then opened the umbrella and stuck his head out. "Ms. Montgomery, what are you doing at Mr. Harrington's new house?"
"I... I just miss him a lot," Isabella said humbly, standing in the rain with her head lowered.
"What did you say? I can't hear you," Felix said, straining his ears.
"I said, I just miss him a lot."
"Ms. Montgomery, the rain is too heavy. Come closer and speak louder," Felix said, suddenly closing the umbrella, putting it away, and shutting the car door. He then looked at the approaching Isabella and said, "I said I just miss him and wanted to see him."
Some words, when shouted, lost a bit of their sincerity.
"This is shameless," Eloise said sharply from inside the car, then added, "Let's go."
Felix immediately started the car.
But before the car drove off, Eloise finally rolled down the window.
Isabella quickly walked to the rear window, "Mrs. Harrington, what do you want from me?"
"Whatever it is, we'll talk when I come out. You stand here now. If I don't see you when I come out, I'll know exactly how 'sincere' you are towards our Harrington family."
"What?" Isabella suddenly felt she might be being played.
But this was Eloise, the most authoritative person in the Harrington family. Although Arabella was managing the family affairs now, as long as Eloise spoke, Arabella would immediately follow her instructions.
"If you go back to the car, it means you don't respect me," Eloise said, then rolled up the window and told Felix, "Felix, let's go inside."
"Yes," Felix said, starting the car and driving towards the entrance.
The gate slowly opened and then closed again.
Isabella looked at the gate, her heart suddenly aching.
It was so close, yet she couldn't get in.
She thought, 'If it were before, Alexander would have personally driven me in.
'I should have been the mistress of this house.
'But now...
'To show my sincerity in wanting to join the Harrington family and my respect for Eloise, I have to stand here?'
The rain at the end of November was bone-chillingly cold.
And she had to stand here, waiting for Eloise to come out.
Isabella felt she had to endure this hardship.
She stood there, watching as the door slowly closed, and the car carrying Eloise drove farther and farther away until it was out of sight.
Soaked to the bone, she remained outside in the rain.
She thought if enduring this downpour meant gaining a special place in the Harrington family's eyes, then it was worth it.
She thought, 'With the Harrington family backing me, no one can defeat me.'
After Eloise entered the house, Victoria quickly dashed downstairs.
"Slow down."
"Grandma, what are you doing here?"
Victoria rushed down and happily hugged Eloise's arm.
"I've missed you so much. Ever since I heard about your pregnancy, I've been thrilled and can't stop thinking about you."
"So you didn't think about me before?"
"Of course I did, but I knew you wanted to live your own life and have your freedom, so I held back. But now, I just can't help it."
Victoria suggested with a smile, "Well, if you can't help it, then why not stay with us for a while? You're more than welcome to stay with me and the baby."
Victoria had always longed to live with her elders, enjoying their affection—who wouldn't like that?
"Then I'll definitely stay."
Eloise responded happily.
Meanwhile, Alexander, descending the stairs, looked a bit annoyed.
"Alexander, weren't you supposed to be at work today?"
"Yes."
Eloise's eyes twinkled with amusement as she spoke, but Alexander responded seriously.
Eloise teased him about being clingy, but he was just being attentive to his wife.
Having a chance to stay close to Victoria was something he wasn't about to miss.
Nearly an hour later, the doorbell rang. Eloise, still sipping her coffee with a slight frown, asked as she heard footsteps approaching, "Is that Isabella?"
"Yes," Alfred answered.
"What did she say?" Eloise asked, sipping her coffee with a hint of satisfaction.
"She's asking when you'll be coming out and wants me to let you know she's been waiting," Alfred replied.
"Don't bother with her. If the doorbell rings again, just ignore it," Eloise instructed.
"Understood."
Alfred quickly stepped away.
Victoria, curious, asked, "Who's out there?"
"Who else but that shameless woman trying to seduce every man she meets?" Eloise said, her tone unusually harsh. It was rare for her to use such strong language, but Isabella brought out her worst.
Victoria immediately understood who Eloise was referring to and glanced over at Alexander, who sat alone, absorbed in his phone.
"You don't need to worry about Isabella. She's probably been loitering around your house for a while. I'll make sure to teach her a lesson when I get the chance," Eloise said to Victoria.
Victoria responded with a smile, "Okay."
Seeing Alexander's lack of reaction, Victoria decided not to dwell on it. After all, Isabella had chosen to come and suffer this indignity of her own accord—no one had forced her to.
The morning passed with Eloise and Victoria drinking coffee and watching TV in the living room, while Alexander stayed nearby. Initially, he sat alone, but eventually, he couldn't resist joining Victoria, sitting close and holding her hand while dealing with emails.
Outside, the rain had eased considerably, but Isabella was growing colder by the minute. More than two hours had passed.
She was almost certain that Eloise was toying with her. But as long as there was even a sliver of hope, she couldn't bring herself to give up.
Even if Eloise was playing games, Isabella had already shown her sincerity. She needed Eloise to see that.
As the sun began to break through the clouds, casting a harsh light, Isabella suddenly smiled. An idea had come to her, and despite the cold, she felt a surge of determination.
