Chapter 253 Putting on the Wedding Ring
A sudden twitch of his Adam's apple caught her attention, causing her hand to tremble in response. She was instantly transported back to the day they first met, a memory steeped in the rich aroma of red wine. She had been captivated by the movement of his Adam's apple then, and now... Now, it gave her another reason to fall deeper in love with him. Victoria quickly averted her gaze, her fingers gingerly unbuttoning one, then two buttons on his shirt, revealing his neck.
"Take it off," Alexander commanded once more. Victoria understood he was referring to the black string around his neck, from which hung two rings. The sight of them made her heart stutter in her chest.
Alexander held her gaze, his voice steady, "Put on the ring. I will personally escort you to the airport." Victoria was at a loss for words. She was still wearing her mother's ring, and she had assumed he had lost these two rings long ago. They had spent countless nights together, and he had never worn them in her presence.
Was it possible that he had only begun wearing them today, upon his arrival? The thought sent her heart pounding in her chest.
Alexander continued, "If you still refuse to wear the ring, you don't have to go on this business trip."
"I'll wear it," Victoria quickly agreed, the thought of him preventing her return to Country M too much to bear. Alexander studied her, "Don't take it off. Joe will keep an eye on you for me. Can you do that?"
"I can," Victoria replied, her heart trembling at his words, but she managed to respond without a trace of guilt. Only then did Alexander lift her hand, instructing, "Help me put it on."
"I can't undo it," Victoria confessed, unable to untie the knot he had made.
"You silly goose," Alexander's gaze softened as he looked into her eyes. With a swift movement, he untied the ring from the string and opened his palm to reveal the two rings.
Victoria was touched, but a wave of anxiety washed over her. If she wanted to leave, she had to act now. Otherwise, how could she deceive him?
Victoria reached out, taking the man's ring from his palm. Alexander extended his hand in response, and Victoria looked at him, questioning, "Are you sure you want me to help you put it on?"
"No matter poverty or wealth, health or illness," Alexander's gaze was serious, his words echoing the solemnity of wedding vows.
Victoria was deeply moved, her eyes welling up with tears. Why was he saying these things? Yet, Alexander continued to watch her intently as she slipped the wedding ring onto his finger. He knew that one day, she would willingly do this for him. As Victoria admired the ring on his finger, she found herself imagining a lifetime with him.
That had been her intention when they registered their marriage. But now, she was planning to leave.
She reached out to take the other ring, intending to put it on herself, but before her fingers could touch his palm, he abruptly withdrew his hand and requested, "Give me your hand."
"I can put it on myself."
Alexander remained silent, his gaze never leaving hers. Victoria felt a wave of unease under his scrutiny, and she reluctantly extended her hand. But when he attempted to slide the ring onto her finger, she instinctively pulled away. She didn't want him to help her put on the ring.
Immediately, Alexander released her hand, stating, "If you don't want to, forget it."
Victoria was shocked. "It's not that."
"Not what?" he asked.
"It's not that I don't want to," she said.
"Then, do you want to?" Alexander's patience was wearing thin.
"Yeah."
"Yeah?"
"Yes, I do." Victoria's irritation was evident, but she dared not express her anger.
Upon hearing this, Alexander continued to regard her with suspicion, questioning, "Do you remember what I just said?"
"What?"
"No matter poverty or wealth..." Victoria's voice trailed off. She tried her best to continue, but how could she utter such a profound promise so casually? She couldn't do it as effortlessly as he had. She was ready to give up.
"Let it go."
However, before she could pull away, Alexander suddenly grasped her hand.
