Chapter 287 Retribution is Inevitable

"By the way," Alexander began, his gaze locked onto Isabella as he held Victoria's hand, "I heard the burglar was headed for Ankenra."A hush fell over the room.Isabella's mouth moved, but no sound emerged. Her face drained of color, becoming as pale as parchment.Victoria turned to him, her eyes wide with surprise. How did he know?"Victoria, did you explain it to Alexander like this? Were you really attacked by the burglar?" Isabella's voice was filled with accusation, her gaze never wavering from Victoria. She refused to believe that Victoria could remain unafraid. Victoria returned her stare, a look of confusion etched on her face. The tension in the room was palpable. Everyone could sense Isabella's hostility towards Victoria. How could Victoria ignore it?Victoria had never wanted to believe that a woman could harbor such malice, especially one of Isabella's noble standing. Yet, in that moment, she found herself questioning Isabella's character."Lies always come to light. You didn't grow up with Alexander. He despises deceit," Isabella continued. The atmosphere in the room shifted again. All but Jasmine, who remained blissfully unaware, had formed their opinions. And they all aligned."Indeed, lies will be exposed. And criminals will surely face justice," Victoria retorted, her gaze fixed on Isabella."Prison attire? What does that mean?" Isabella's voice wavered, uncertainty creeping into her tone."It means the criminal will inevitably be caught," Alexander replied nonchalantly. At his words, Isabella felt a surge of indignation, her eyes welling up with unshed tears. She felt betrayed. Alexander was siding with Victoria. What about her? She had been loyal to him for two years, and this was her reward?Victoria regarded Isabella with a mixture of revulsion and pity. She had once felt sorry for Isabella, believing she carried Alexander's child but lacked his affection. Now, Victoria realized the person most deserving of pity was herself. How could a man suddenly appear in her house and rape her?Such coincidences were rare. If they did occur, it was because someone had plotted it all along.
Victoria suddenly found herself reluctant to return to Danisland. Instead, she was curious to see what else Isabella was capable of.The rest of the evening was a blur. Victoria drank whenever someone proposed a toast, resulting in her consuming more alcohol than intended. Her head spun.Seeing Victoria's inebriated state, Alexander finally intervened. "One last drink, then we head home."The welcome banquet concluded before eleven o'clock.Everyone departed, leaving Alexander and Victoria alone.Victoria leaned against his shoulder, her mind foggy.Alexander glanced down at her flushed and beautiful face, asking softly, "Are you feeling alright?"Victoria shook her head in response.A tender smile graced Alexander's lips as he gently brushed a stray lock of hair from her face.Isabella watched from a distance, her heart aching as she saw Alexander's gentle demeanor towards Victoria. She felt Alexander had been duped and was about to intervene when Sebastian grabbed her."Come with me," he commanded. As Sebastian ushered her away, Isabella asked him in the car, "Why did you stop me?""I prevented you from donning prison attire," Sebastian replied solemnly.Isabella froze, surprised that Sebastian was aware of her actions."Do you think you'd still be sitting comfortably if not everyone present were familiar?" Sebastian asked.

"Are you threatening me?" Isabella responded.

"Threatening? You had Victoria assaulted, Isabella. You've lost your mind," Sebastian shot back."Have I lost my mind? Didn't you see Victoria deceiving Alexander?" Isabella argued."And how do you know it was deceit? What if Alexander knows everything?" Sebastian countered."That's impossible! If he knew, why would he still touch her?" Isabella questioned."Because he loves her," Sebastian replied. The car came to a halt at the roadside, and Sebastian yelled.Isabella remained silent for a moment before slapping Sebastian across the face."You don't understand what love is," she spat.
