Chapter 374 Sacrificing the Self for the Greater Good
“Who is feeling sorry for Victoria? She has already lost her parents. Should we allow her to lose her marriage too?" Olivia asked. Olivia disliked it when people played the victim.
"Do you like her so much?" Isabella suppressed her displeasure and asked.
"I just can't stand seeing a group of people much older than her teaming up to bully her. She's just in her early twenties, must she go through so much darkness at such a young age?" Olivia's tone softened a bit, but she had to say what needed to be said.
Looking at Victoria's cautious demeanor, Olivia feared that Victoria's inner world might had already plunged into darkness. Even with one wrong step, her whole life could be overshadowed.
"But I don't have much time left," Isabella pleaded.
"But her life is just beginning," Olivia replied.
"In the end, you're still on her side." Isabella retorted.
“Am I supposed to take her side? Don't you think you're being selfish? You have a terminal illness. You want to die peacefully, so should we all just go along with your wishes? Are we supposed to act like gods, Isabella? We're just regular people," Olivia continued.
"What do you want me to do then, just die like this?" Tears streamed down Isabella's face.
"Sacrificing the self to fulfill their love, I think what you're doing is commendable," Olivia remarked.
Isabella was stunned as she looked at the person in front of her, feeling breathless. They were in a Rockland Street apartment.
The man had just opened the bedroom door when the phone rang, surprising him.
The person who had been sleeping in bed quickly sat up and asked, "Who is it?”
"It's me." Alexander sighed and turned on the light.
Victoria squinted in the light, relaxing a bit once she could see him clearly, thinking, ‘Why is he running over in the middle of the night again?’
But he was on the phone, she remained quiet. Unable to help herself, she watched him closely. ‘Is he upset? What happen now?’ She couldn't help but worry.
“Fainted? Shouldn't you call a doctor if someone has fainted?" Alexander finished the call and walked towards the bed.
Victoria watched him approach, briefly concerned about a potential fainting incident before realizing it wasn't him.
She thought, 'He's okay. That's good.Alexander reached the bedside, noticing her staring blankly at him. He waved his hand in front of her. "Mrs. Harrington?"
Victoria snapped out of her daze and asked, "Why are you here again?"
“Why are you here again? Mrs. Harrington, when will you say, 'How do you come back?'" Alexander leaned in close to her, his patient and slightly melancholic voice.
He couldn't explain why he was starting to find comfort in her presence. Being close to her brought him a sense of calm. It was as if there was something about her that attracted him, making him want to be close to her. This allowed Alexander to peacefully drift off to sleep on the cold night.
As she gazed into his deep eyes, Victoria felt a sense of warmth. She couldn't fathom why he had doubts. Did he truly believe that by opening up his heart so fully, the person he cared for would still have the courage to think of him and miss him as they did before?
"Don't be like this, I might misunderstand that you've fallen in love with me." Victoria looked at him eagerly, mustering up the courage to speak.
"Why not? As long as the lady is willing to be a bit more proactive towards her husband." Alexander lifted his hand, cupping her warm cheek.
‘Proactive? How many times have I cried in my dreams, asking why you take so long to come back, do you know how scared I am, how much I missed you, how much I needed you?" Victoria pondered.
Victoria choked back her tears, turning her face away from his warm and reassuring palm. Slowly, she began to distance herself from him.
As he leaned in again, carrying the familiar strong scent of Isabella's perfume, Victoria suddenly felt a prickling sensation. Looking at him, she warned, "Stay there."
Hadn't he met Isabella already? Why was he here now? Victoria looked at him with disdain, continuing, "Shouldn't you be going to see Isabella now?"
"Is it like this?" Alexander squinted in response.
Victoria felt a sense of danger approaching her. Soon enough, his hand firmly grasped her leg.
