Chapter 637 She Wants a House of Her Own

Jenny walked in with her head down, and Victoria took the fruit platter from her hands, hugging it to her chest. She beamed, "Wow, all my favorites, thank you."

"Mr. Harrington brought them back. You should thank him," Jenny smiled.

Victoria was taken aback and finally understood what Jenny had said outside the door earlier.

Seeing how close they were and noticing Alexander seemed a bit upset, Jenny quickly left the room to give them some space.

"How do you plan to thank me?" Alexander picked a strawberry from the fruit platter in her arms, asking in a deep voice.

"Just a verbal thank you," she said and then gave him a push.

She had been so embarrassed when Jenny walked in, but he stood there so calmly.

"Alright," Alexander agreed, then brought the strawberry to her lips.

Victoria's heart skipped a beat, and she couldn't help but look up at him. "I can eat it myself."

"But you're sick and need someone to take care of you," Alexander said.

Victoria pouted and asked, "Can you take care of me every time I get sick?"

Hearing her question, Alexander was speechless.

"Even if you can, I don't need it. I can handle it myself," Victoria added, but still took the strawberry from him and put it in her mouth.

For some reason, the strawberry didn't taste very sweet today.

Alexander slowly crouched in front of her. "I'll do my best."

Victoria felt a pang in her heart but merely replied, "Don't make promises to me."

"Victoria, I'll try to be there whenever you need me."

Victoria didn't respond, simply picking up a strawberry and putting it in his mouth.

Alexander ate it as she watched him, her gaze fixed on his every move.

The room grew quiet.

Victoria knew he wouldn't heed her words, she had asked him not to make promises for a reason.

No matter how much Alexander spoke, actions spoke louder. It seemed he'd never remember that.

But maybe it was better this way.

If she cared too much about every little thing, he would, too, and that could lead to more disappointment.

Sometimes, it was best not to set high expectations for each other.

"Is it sweet?" she asked softly after he finished the strawberry.

"It is," Alexander replied.

"Funny, I find it quite bland."

Victoria said, popping another one into her mouth, still finding it lacking in flavor.

Alexander took the remaining half of the strawberry and ate it himself. After tasting, he met her eyes.

Victoria waited for his response, wondering if she was the only one who found things less sweet.

But Alexander didn't answer. Instead, he suddenly cupped the back of her head and kissed her.

Victoria's heart raced, but the taste of strawberries on his lips seemed to add a hint of sweetness, causing her to slowly kiss him back.

When Alexander finally pulled away, he looked at her. "Is it sweet now?"

"If I give you a cold, you deserve it," she replied.

"Feel free to pass it on."

He said, setting the fruit bowl from her lap onto the floor and continuing to kiss her, holding her head in place.

What was a cold compared to her warmth?

Victoria's heart warmed, though she didn't fully understand why she always seemed to fall for his gentle advances.

She knew that come morning, it might all just slip through her fingers.

Yet, she still fell for it.

She thought, 'Why did a few strawberries have this effect?'

But that night was different from the others.

Different enough that when she woke up the next morning, it felt like a dream.

Especially since Alexander wasn't in bed.

He had been so tender, so gentlemanly last night.

Victoria recalled the scene last night, before blushing, she had covered her face with her arms.

Alexander stood by the doorway of the bathroom, leaning casually against the wall as he watched her. A warm, fuzzy feeling stirred in his chest.

However, that sweet feeling didn't last long.

As they headed downstairs for breakfast, they found Adrian already seated at the table.

Upon seeing Victoria and Alexander, Adrian greeted them with a smile, "Alexander, Victoria, long time no see!"

The elders took their seats without much comment, and the atmosphere was subdued.

Victoria walked over to Adrian and asked, "What brings you here?"

"Well, this is kind of my place too. Besides, I heard you were feeling under the weather. Are you better now?"

"I am," Victoria replied absently, feeling a twinge of discomfort she couldn't quite place.

Alexander pulled out a chair next to Victoria and sat down, his displeasure palpable.

It was clear—he wasn't thrilled to see Adrian.

Adrian said, "Glad to hear it. By the way, I've got a script for you. I'd like you to take a look after breakfast and see if it piques your interest."

"Sure," Victoria said, her response subdued.

"She's planning to get pregnant," Alexander suddenly interjected.

Both Victoria and Adrian turned to him, puzzled, and even the elders seemed taken aback.

"You should be expecting a nephew soon," Alexander explained with a hint of coldness when Adrian looked confused.

Adrian felt a pang of discomfort, as though he'd been pricked by a needle.

The rest of the meal passed in a somewhat stilted silence. Victoria remained quiet, casting glances at Alexander, who maintained a steady, reassuring smile.

"We talked about having kids, remember?" Alexander said softly to Victoria. "Have you forgotten?"

"I remember," Victoria murmured, her gaze dropping to her plate as she continued eating.

Adrian, struggling to breathe normally, shifted his focus. "Grandma, can I come over more often for meals? Lately, I've been really missing you and Grandpa."

"Of course, you're always welcome to come by," Eloise replied, sensing the underlying tension but staying supportive.

"Thank you, Grandma," Adrian said with a grateful smile.

After breakfast, as Alexander was about to leave, he noticed Adrian heading off with the script to find Victoria. He stopped him, saying, "Adrian, we need to talk."

"You go ahead to work. I'll handle the script with Victoria. This role is really perfect for her."

Adrian was eager to avoid a one-on-one conversation with Alexander, he just wanted to make sure Victoria didn't feel pressured to stay. But Alexander followed him and soon overtook him with several purposeful strides, his eyes cold and probing. "Adrian, do you know what you're doing?"

Victoria emerged from her room with her bag slung over her shoulder and asked, "Alexander, are you heading out? Can I come with you? I need to go to the office."

Alexander looked over at her and immediately reached out his hand. Victoria took it and left with him.

As Adrian watched them walk away, the loneliness in his eyes became increasingly hard to mask.

"I was thinking of making another trip to the mountains in a few days."

"No, you're not."

"But..."

Alexander said seriously as he drove, "I've already sent a team to oversee things for you."

Victoria glanced at him in surprise. "When did you arrange that?"

"Three days ago."

She thought, 'How has he managed to be so thorough?'

Victoria guessed that Alexander was worried she might waste the money he had lent her.

She dropped her gaze for a moment, then said, "So we won't be going back to Metro House anytime soon?"

At a red light, the car came to a stop. Alexander glanced at her and nodded. "Correct."

"Then can I…"

Before she could finish her sentence, Alexander said, "Move into our new place."Victoria felt a pang of disappointment. She was still renting her old place and didn't dare to give up the lease. She wanted to have a fallback in the city, even if she was no longer part of the Harrington family. It was comforting to know she still had a place of her own.
