Chapter 698 The Most Familiar Stranger

It was past eight in the evening.

The person on the bed finally stirred. Victoria had just woken up.

She fumbled around her pillow, and when her phone lit up, so did her face.

She didn't even notice the extra person in the room. Feeling a bit less pain, she dialed Eve's number. "Hey, Eve, when you coming back? Okay."

Her voice was hoarse but still gentle. Whatever Eve said, she hung up quickly, and then...

Her heart skipped a beat, and her long, thick eyelashes fluttered as she looked towards the window.

The tall figure in the dim light, like a demon in the dark, suffocating her.

Victoria slowly sat up, struggling to take in the figure.

The air seemed to be getting thinner, like something was sucking it away.

She reminded herself to stay calm, but she was already trembling.

How did Alexander suddenly show up here?

How did he get in?

He...

"Long time no see," Alexander said faintly.

Victoria's mouth moved, but no sound came out for a long time.

But she knew, it had indeed been a long time.

For some reason, she suddenly felt that the figure she had seen on the street that time must have been him.

She had naively thought it was an illusion back then.

Because she had already had such illusions more than ten times before.

Alexander's presence was too strong, making the once warm room feel oppressive.

"Looks like you're sleeping well now," he said.

Compared to his sleepless nights, he was really envious.

"When did you get here?" Victoria tried several times before finally making a sound.

"Around seven," Alexander replied lazily, leaning against the window with his hands in his pockets.

Before seven?

Had he been standing there the whole time?

Victoria's heart was pounding, and she didn't dare to look at him.

She tried to get out of bed. Although her body was a bit uncoordinated, she eventually stood up, unnaturally holding her wrist and said softly, "Let's talk outside."

She walked ahead, very slowly.

Alexander only followed after she had left the room, but she had just reached the stairs.

He silently followed behind her. Anyway, he had plenty of time to talk to her.

The large house suddenly became quiet, as if only they existed in the world.

Victoria, wearing slippers, walked downstairs and quietly glanced outside.

The car was still parked there, which reassured her a bit. Then she turned to look at the tall and upright Alexander who had followed her down. "Do you want some coffee?"

"I have insomnia."

Did he mean he wouldn't drink it?

She lowered her head, walked to the sofa, and sat down, picking up a small plush toy and placing it aside.

Alexander walked over nonchalantly and stood diagonally across from her, looking at her.

After a while, he still hadn't sat down. Victoria felt uncomfortable being stared at and finally said in a low voice, "Please sit."

Alexander silently sat down on the single sofa next to her.

But his eyes were still on her face.

Victoria uncomfortably lifted her eyes, "Why did you come? Is there something you care about?"

"Shouldn't you be the one with something to say?" Alexander retorted.

Victoria lowered her gaze again. When she saw him cross his long legs, she looked down, focusing on her nose and heart, then uncomfortably grabbed her hand, and then...

She felt the ring on her hand and immediately placed it on top.

"Thanks for divorcing me," Victoria said quickly and calmly.

Alexander sneered at her words, his gaze darkening when he noticed the ring on her hand.

Victoria had already guessed why he was here, but she couldn't bring it up herself.

If he didn't mention it, it meant he wasn't sure. That gave her a chance.

Victoria silently clenched her hand and then fell into a long silence with him.

The room was eerily quiet, like a bloody scene was about to erupt at any moment.

But in the end, they just sat there.

Victoria silently calculated the time it would take for Eve and Frank to return. She knew exactly how long it would take them to get home from where they were, hoping that the two sharp individuals would hide when they saw the car outside.

Snowflakes had started to fall again outside. Alexander glanced out and then reminded her, "It's snowing."

Victoria's heart felt like it had been scalded, but she reflexively turned to look out the window.

She wasn't wearing her glasses and couldn't see clearly, but she thought it must be snowing.

But it came too late, just like a joke.

She lowered her gaze again and softly asked, "How's Grandma?"

"If you're worried, why don't you go see her yourself?"

Go see her herself?

She would never go back to that place.

Never again.

"And you? Are you doing well?"

Alexander looked at her and asked another question.

It was already past nine in the evening, and Eve and Frank still hadn't brought Strawberry back. She felt a bit more at ease and could speak more calmly. "Pretty good. How about you?"

She lifted her head slightly but lowered it again before she could see him clearly.

Alexander's smile didn't reach his eyes and he barely made a sound. "Not bad."

Victoria didn't say anything more. It was just a small talk.

Sitting together like this, they were like the most familiar strangers.

She turned her eyes to look elsewhere, silently choking up, reminding herself to stay calm and composed.

It was all in the past. All in the past.

Victoria didn't want to ask more or learn about the past year. She just wanted to end this conversation quickly.

She hoped Alexander would leave soon and return to where he belonged.

She felt the burning, splitting pain in her lower back again. She clenched her hand and endured it.

She was always good at enduring, and she thought she could do it well.

When he left, they wouldn't argue anymore.

She could definitely handle things calmly with him.

Or maybe he just came to see her?

She squeezed her hand until it turned red, repeatedly restraining herself.

After several minutes of silence, Alexander watched her continuously clenching her hand, glanced at her and then looked out the window.

Although it changed a lot, it was still a moment to watch the snow together.

After watching the snow, it was time to talk business, right?

Alexander's eyes turned cold again.

"You..."

"You..."

They suddenly spoke at the same time.

Victoria lifted her eyes to look at him and after thinking for a long time about whether to let him speak first or speak herself, she steeled herself and hurriedly said, "I remarried."

She felt her heart racing, knowing she was lying.

But once the lie was told, it had to be as real as possible.

She raised her hand. "Look."
