Chapter 473 I have indeed been a bit harsh on him
"""You said it yourself, just one look,"" Victoria retorted.
""Victoria?"" Alexander whispered.
""What?"" Victoria puzzled.
""Wait until I get back to mess with me,"" Alexander said.
That night, she couldn't sleep.
But it wasn't because she was sad but she was happy instead.
She didn't know if other girls were so aroused by a phrase or expression from their crush that they couldn't sleep, but she was that night. She imagined his aggressive, hormone-fueled visage when she closed her eyes.
Even in the morning, she dreamed he kissed her.
She smiled foolishly and heard someone whispering next to her. ""This little sweetheart must be having a sweet dream.""
The voice was somewhat familiar, but her mind quickly wandered.
""Victoria?"" Eloise called out.
""Alexander,"" Victoria whispered, turned over, and after her eyes were open for a few seconds, she quickly sat up. ""Grandma.""
""Do you dream about Alexander all the time? Looks like I'm really going to have a grandchild, right?"" Eloise asked.
""No, I didn't dream about him."" Victoria felt embarrassedand didn't dare to look Eloise in the eye.
""Mom, stop teasing her. Breakfast is ready. You should get up and wash up."" Arabella stood by and said to her, then helped Eloise up.
""We'll go downstairs first. If you're still sleepy, you can sleep a bit more. Come down when you're hungry,"" Eloise reminded her before leaving.
""Okay, I'll get up right away,"" Victoria responded softly with a smile.
Since the elders were already up, she couldn't sleep anymore.
But just now, did she really call out Alexander?
After washing up, she was about to go downstairs for breakfast when her phone suddenly rang. Victoria glanced at the neatly made bed.
""Hello, Olivia,"" Victoria answered the call.
""Isabella's leukemia might be fake."" Olivia's voice sounded muffled over the phone.
Victoria felt a jolt in her heart but quickly calmed down. ""Got it.""
She had considered this possibility, but the word 'might' wasn't enough for them to conclude.
Suspecting and confirming were different.
After breakfast, Felix drove her from The Harrington Mansion to the office building, and Victoria saw that car again outside the office building.
It must be Isabella's people. To this day, Isabella still liked to have people watch her.
So, where had Isabella gone herself?
The next evening, in a club's private room, Victoria and Olivia were chatting while eating nuts. They had ordered two bottles of wine but hadn't drunk much.
Olivia showed Victoria her phone. ""Isabella can still go find your husband, which means her illness is most probably fake.""
Victoria lazily glanced up and saw Isabella's whereabouts on Olivia's phone.
She was with Benjamin, William, and Edward in the city where Alexander was on a business trip.
Judging by the decor behind her, it was a well-known local nightclub.
And Isabella was still sitting next to Alexander, sweetly holding up two fingers.
Alexander was also looking at the camera, his sharp gaze piercing straight into her heart.
Victoria quickly lowered her eyes. ""Alexander said he couldn't take risks without evidence.""
""Why?"" Olivia took back her phone, looking puzzled.
""He can't take risks without evidence,"" Victoria repeated calmly.
It was literal, so she didn't explain.
She was pleased as a fool after two days of online romance. Then she saw it tonight.
Actually, Alexander was supposed to return to the city today. By the afternoon, she felt something was off, and later she became uneasy.
And now...
Why do people always have unrealistic expectations of others?
Seeing her so troubled, Olivia said, ""Open your phone and give it to me.""
""What are you doing?"" Victoria asked.
""That message was five minutes ago. Don't you want to know if Alexander will tell you the truth?"" Olivia replied.
""He won't lie."" Victoria believed in him.
""Are you sure?"" Olivia asked her seriously.
Victoria suddenly felt tense.
Although he had been honest before, she wasn't sure.
But a few days ago, he had been messaging her.
Not long after, Alexander, who was out of town, received a message.
Victoria texted: [What are you busy with?]
Alexander replied: [Benjamin and the others are here, we're having drinks.]
The phone was on the table. Olivia and Victoria leaned over to look at the message. He wasn't lying; he was just avoiding the main issue.
Soon, Olivia picked up her phone again and texted: [Olivia says she saw Isabella next to you on her social media.]
Victoria watched, feeling a bit uneasy, ""Isn't this a bit too much?""
""What's wrong with it? Let's see what he says,"" Olivia said.
Victoria's heart was pounding.
She felt she was crossing a line.
Even though she told him that night that if he wanted to be with her, he couldn't be nice to Isabella anymore, she had already set a boundary between them in her heart.
That boundary was set when he left after getting their marriage certificate.
Even now, after sleeping in the same bed so many times, that boundary hadn't disappeared.
In another city, Alexander was thinking about how to respond when a familiar scent approached.
""What are you doing? Reporting to your wife?"" Isabella asked.
""Excuse me."" Alexander suddenly remembered Victoria stubbornly refusing to sit in his car because of this scent, and he immediately got up.
Isabella looked up at his tall figure leaving and pretended to be nonchalant, cheerfully reminding him, ""Come back soon after you report.""
While Victoria and Olivia were waiting for his message, her phone
suddenly rang.
It was a call.
This time, not only Victoria but also Olivia panicked.
""Answer it,"" Olivia urged her.
""You answer it."" Victoria's heart was racing, and her voice was trembling.
""He called you. Answer it and see what he says. You don't have to talk."" Olivia saw her nervousness.
""Forget it."" Victoria couldn't even bear to hear his voice now.
She was afraid of his explanation.
After all, everyone knew that explanations were just excuses.
Seeing her reluctance, Olivia directly answered the call on speaker.
""Why did you take so long to answer?""
A restrained, low voice immediately came through.
That familiar voice made her heartburn.
""Sorry."" Victoria didn't dare say anything else.
""Are you with Olivia?"" Alexander asked.
""Yes."" Victoria still gave a one-word answer.
Then she heard his serious, undeniable voice: ""Don't overthink it. It's not the first time they've come to the city where I work. We'll be back tomorrow, okay?""
""Got it,"" Victoria answered blankly, then hung up and slowly put her phone down.
Was there really a girl who, without serious confirmation from the person she liked, could see him with another girl and not overthink?
She couldn't do it.
She felt like there was a heavy stone in her heart, weighing her down, making it hard to breathe.
But she had asked so many times.
He had promised her he wouldn't be involved with Isabella, but...
If she asked him to make Isabella leave or come back immediately,
she was really afraid he would say he couldn't.
Because he was afraid, Isabella would get emotional, afraid she would faint.
The president of the Harrington Group couldn't take risks on this matter.
She could only endure it silently, always enduring.
""Do you really have to be so afraid of him? Can't you question him?"" Olivia asked, needing help understanding.
""What should I question him about?"" Victoria asked.
""Question him about why he's drinking with Isabella and why he didn't come back immediately. Are you less important than Isabella?"" Olivia said.
Victoria could only smile helplessly. ""He may have married me since my parents had a traffic accident during Mrs. Harrington's birthday. So I'm hard on him indeed."""
