Chapter 768 He Spoke About Their Past in Public
"We can't take in any more friends," Tessa said, shooting a sideways glance at Daisy.
Daisy looked to Alexander for backup, but he wasn't paying her any attention.
Alexander then turned to Benjamin, who pretended to be busy looking for something, avoiding eye contact. Finally, His gaze landed on Victoria. At first, it seemed accidental, but he kept staring.
He thought to himself, 'Did I really come out early just to greet the guests? No, I'm just sulking.'
When Alexander heard Victoria was leaving, he was so mad he felt like he couldn't breathe, and he wasn't feeling any better now.
But seeing her in a light blue dress with a simple white shawl, her dress fluttering in the wind, still made his heart race.
In that moment, his anger was overshadowed by concern for her well-being in the cold. Struggling to stay calm, he whispered to the person next to him, "Let them in."This time, Benjamin didn't play dumb. He walked over, gently wrapped his arm around Tessa's waist, and said in a low, steady voice, "You go upstairs with Victoria and Emily first."
"Okay," Tessa replied. She was usually pretty stubborn, but she knew there was a reason when Benjamin used that tone. She grabbed Victoria's hand. "Let's go upstairs; it's too cold out here."
Victoria, feeling awkward, glanced at the baby in Alexander's arms and asked Tessa, "Do you want to hold Strawberry?"
"Can I?" Tessa responded eagerly.
"I want to hold her too," said Emily, who was pregnant and wanted some practice.
Emily then added, "You're not even married yet, and I'm about to be a mom."
As both Emily and Tessa reached for Strawberry, Alexander looked worried and said, "Be careful." He thought, 'Do these women even know how to hold a baby? They better not make her uncomfortable.'
Victoria watched Emily carry Strawberry inside and followed, not even glancing at Alexander.
Frustrated, Alexander called out, "Victoria."
She stopped, puzzled, thinking she heard someone call her name.
In front of everyone, Alexander suddenly took off his suit jacket and said, "Take my coat inside."
He was only wearing a simple white shirt underneath, no vest. The cold winter air bit at his skin; it was almost Christmas.
After taking off his jacket, Alexander tidied it up while looking at her. Seeing she had no intention of walking over, he strode over with his long legs and repeated, "Take it inside."
Victoria looked at his coat, then at him, and softly asked, "What's wrong with you?"
He had taken off his coat for no reason, in front of so many people. Someone was even taking photos. If she remembered correctly, it was one of VicLiv's photographers.
"Just take it," he insisted.
Seeing she wasn't taking it, Alexander suddenly spread the coat open and moved it towards her back. Victoria quickly dodged to the side and hurriedly took it, saying, "I got it. I'll go inside first."
Victoria lowered her head, holding his coat, and walked inside quickly, hoping he wouldn't call her again. She couldn't help but think, 'Why ask me to take his coat in front of so many people? It's winter, not summer. Won't he be cold?'
Alexander watched her almost running away and couldn't help but sigh. Then he turned around and smiled.
Seeing Alexander's expression, Daisy thought, 'I knew she's just playing hard to get.'
Alexander returned to stand with Benjamin, chatting with familiar guests.
Daisy couldn't help but step forward again. Before she could say something, Alexander spoke up, "Ms. Bryant, haven't you gone in yet? Your parents have already gone in; you should go in too."
"But..."
"Please, go in," Alexander repeated more firmly.
"Okay, I'll go in and wait for you," she said, remembering he had personally told Victoria she was his date for the night. She had dressed up just to be by his side, but now she had to walk in alone.
Half an hour later, the large banquet hall was packed.
The tall and handsome Alexander, dressed in black trousers and a white shirt, walked to the podium. "Good evening, everyone. Thank you all for taking the time to attend my daughter Strawberry's Welcome Baby Party. On behalf of my family, I extend our heartfelt thanks for your presence."
After calmly finishing his speech, Alexander turned to look at the large screen behind him.
The banquet hall suddenly fell silent. Everyone was first captivated by his gentlemanly yet powerful voice, and then by the video playing behind him.
A slideshow of photos of Strawberry, from birth to now, all taken by Victoria and Eve, began to play.
Alexander's throat felt a bit tight. He turned to look at Victoria sitting in the front row.
As his eyes grew misty, he lowered his head, looking at the words Victoria had written for him in advance. After a moment of contemplation, he pushed the script aside, smiled at the audience, and said, "When my wife gave birth to Strawberry, I wasn't by her side, and for that, I deeply apologize."
Victoria initially thought everything was fine, but hearing the unexpected words, she immediately looked up at him.
"Time flies. In the blink of an eye, more than a year has passed," Alexander continued with a smile, though his voice occasionally fell silent.
After saying this, he turned to look at the video playing behind him, his eyes quickly narrowing. In the corner of one photo, although it was just a small part, he was sure it was a wheelchair.
'She had once sat in a wheelchair,' the thought hit Alexander, and his expression suddenly became solemn.
No one else noticed the small outline of the wheelchair in the corner of the photo, but he did. The forced smile on his face disappeared. After a long while, he looked back at the audience.
Meanwhile, Victoria was also staring straight at him, feeling a bit uneasy. She didn't know why Alexander suddenly brought this up.
A year and a few months had passed. Time had flown by, like a gust of wind, quickly bringing them to today. They had gone through so many ups and downs and finally had the child they wanted, but they hadn't been able to accompany Strawberry's growth together.
As Victoria continued to look at Alexander, she noticed a change in his expression. The intensity in his gaze made her heart skip a beat, and she felt a sense of impending crisis. It was as if he was about to call her name. She immediately looked towards the door."Last year, something happened in our family, which you all might have heard about. My wife, to save my grandmother..." Alexander continued, his voice steady but filled with emotion. He looked at Victoria, memories flooding his mind.
It had been a beautiful day. They had even planned how to spend that wonderful evening. But then came the unexpected turn.
"We were on vacation abroad at the time, but I went to a meeting," Alexander said, lowering his head with a bitter smile.
As he spoke, tears began to fall. He took a deep breath, trying to suppress the turbulent emotions inside. His face showed a mix of sorrow and regret.
