Chapter 34 Return
He rubbed the cigarette in his hand over and over, his eyes deep and inscrutable.——Regal Retreat, master bedroom on the top floor.Alexander silently stood by the bed, watching the woman sleeping soundly in his bed. ‘He must be crazy,’ he thought. Otherwise, why would he have such thoughts? That night, even he couldn't sleep. Even though so much alcohol tried to numb his nerves, his mind was still too jumbled up to rest.
The next morning, the first thing Victoria saw when she opened her eyes was him on the sofa. The tall man laid on the spacious sofa; the blanket that covered him had fallen to the floor. The room was a bit cold, so she got out of bed and walked over, intending to cover him with the blanket after picking it up.
Alexander suddenly turned around, his dark eyes, filled with fatigue, staring straight at her. Victoria's breath hitched, and after a long time, she whispered, "Alexander." Alexander kept looking at her but didn't respond. Victoria felt awkward, not knowing what to do; she was still holding the blanket he had used last night.
"Aren't you going to cover me?" He finally spoke.
"Ah? Yes." Victoria awkwardly placed the blanket on him. It was a bit messy, but she didn't dare to continue adjusting it. Just as she was about to get up, Alexander suddenly stopped her, "Victoria, can you take care of people at all?"
Take care of people? She was just... just reflexively acting. She regretted it now; what was she doing just now?
"I'm sorry; I can't." She stood up straight, intending to leave.
"Victoria." He grabbed her hand as he called her name.
Her heart thumped, not knowing what had broken. She lowered her head and looked at the hand that was holding her wrist, reminding herself to stay calm.
"What is it?" She asked him after adjusting her emotions.
"I think I have a fever."
"Fever?" She was a bit stunned.
"Yeah, you feel it." He said.
But feel what? He moved her hand toward his forehead. Victoria tried to pull away awkwardly, but... the temperature of his palm was indeed high.
"I'll find a thermometer for you."
"What are you being awkward about?" He suddenly asked.
Victoria looked at him in surprise. What was she being awkward about? Clearly, he was the one forcing... Given their current situation, it would be best to avoid physical contact, right?
Two years ago, they had physical contact. At that birthday party, Old Lady Harrington had them dance the opening dance in place of another couple. That night, they seemed to be in sync, but... well, that was just that night.
"Sit down, and then use your hand to check my temperature." Alexander commanded.
She came back to her senses, but still pushed his hand away, lowering her head and whispering, "Alexander, I can't."
"Can't what?" Alexander didn't know what was wrong with her; she was being so difficult.
"I'll go find a thermometer for you." She still pushed his hand away and ran off.
Alexander lay there, finding the situation amusing. The way she was acting; it wasn't shyness, nor embarrassment, it seemed more like... disgust? Ha! How could she despise her own husband?
Victoria found a thermometer, but she didn't want to go upstairs again. The nanny said she was cooking and couldn't come up. So, she had to go back to the bedroom, back to him.
Alexander didn't want to pay attention to her and just pressed his arm against his burning forehead. Victoria stood there, hesitating for a few seconds, then reminded him, "Alexander, take your hand away; I need to see how high your fever is."
Annoyed, Alexander moved his arm away, then stared directly at her. Victoria didn't dare to meet his angry gaze; she just focusing on measuring his temperature.
38.3 degrees. He really had a fever.
"Victoria, do you know that the person you are despising right now is your husband?"
"I know."
