Chapter 181 I Have No Obligation to Forgive Him

Victoria Kensington abruptly retracted her hand, her voice resolute as she declared, "I bear no obligation to offer him forgiveness."

"Hasn't Alex already punished him enough by inflicting such injuries?" The question hung in the air, heavy with implications.

At this, Isabella Montgomery's eyes welled up, brimming with sudden tears.

"What?" Victoria thought she must have misheard, her confusion palpable.

"Listen, you have to swear not to tell Alex that I was the one who revealed everything. He didn't indicate any recognition of my bodyguard that night, did he? They're actually quite familiar with each other."

Victoria felt a wave of dizziness wash over her.

So that was the truth of it?

Was that the reason he had allowed the man to escape?

"Vicky, I implore you to forgive me—and please, keep your distance from Alex. If he doesn't initiate the divorce proceedings soon, I'll be walking down the aisle with child. I want to don a beautiful gown before my belly swells too noticeably."

Isabella's voice was soft, pleading, and tinged with a pitiful undertone.

Victoria cast a brief glance at her before rising to her feet. "I'm afraid I can't assist you with your bridal predicament. Now, I must ask you to leave my home."

"Vicky," Isabella began, but Victoria cut her off.

"And refrain from returning."

"Alex merely pities you, which is why he's stalling on the divorce. Why else would you be residing in such a modest dwelling? Are you attempting to garner his sympathy?" Isabella stood as well, challenging Victoria with an air of presumption.

Victoria was left in a state of doubt.

Was this all she had become—the heiress of the Rohan Family, the embodiment of elegance and nobility in the eyes of others—reduced to harboring petty suspicions?

"Miss Montgomery, you've reminded me that I too can play the sympathy card," Victoria retorted, no longer feeling the need to mince words with Isabella.

Isabella was taken aback.

"I insist, please leave," Victoria reiterated.

"I had thought your family, a lineage of scholars, had instilled in you a sense of reason despite your youth. I didn't anticipate such stubbornness, clinging to a man who doesn't love you. Regardless, I've offered my apologies and explained everything. If you choose to remain obstinate, that's your issue. Goodbye." Isabella's parting words were laced with a deceptive politeness, punctuated by a curt nod.

Suddenly, the doorbell chimed.

Isabella moved to answer it, a calculating glint in her eyes as she cast a final glance at the defiant young woman.

As the door swung open, the man on the threshold was met with the sight of a tear-streaked woman, the embodiment of distress.

"What's wrong?" he inquired.

"Nothing. I merely came to apologize to my dear sister Vicky." With that, she brushed past him and made her exit.

Alexander Harrington cast a puzzled look at the woman hobbling towards the kitchen.

Isabella Montgomery paused, leaning against the wall for support. She raised a hand to her forehead, grimacing slightly, "Alex, I'm feeling a bit..."

It was then that Alexander's gaze shifted back to her.

---

"Isabella Montgomery?" A frantic voice echoed from beyond the door.

Victoria Kensington's footsteps faltered, and she instinctively rushed towards the sound.

But as she reached the doorway, wincing with the pain in her foot, she caught sight of a woman in the hallway, her hand reaching out to touch a man's face. Her voice was weak as she murmured, "Alex, don't blame Vicky, she's just too young to understand ."

"Isabella Montgomery?" Alexander called out to her again.

Then, suddenly, Isabella collapsed. Alexander caught her in his arms and, before departing, turned back to Victoria, "What did you say to her?"

Victoria stared at the man who was interrogating her from a distance, her vision blurring.

What could she possibly say?

"You don't need to go to work today." With that, Alexander swiftly entered the elevator with Isabella cradled in his arms.

Victoria slumped against the door frame, slowly sinking to the floor.

The pain in her ankle intensified, causing her to break out in a cold sweat.

He had assured her it would heal after a few treatments.

Yet now, it hurt more than ever.
