Chapter 686 The Only Reason She Survived
In some foreign land, right in front of this swanky lakeside villa, a classy lady with long hair and a shawl stepped out, heading towards the dried-up lawn.
There was someone chilling there with a stroller, and it gave her a bit of a jolt.
The breeze had a bite to it, making the air feel crisp.
Victoria, standing by the lake, heard footsteps, turned around, and saw the visitor. She flashed a smile and said, "Long time no see."
"Are you really bouncing?"
Melissa realized she was tripping and calmed herself before asking.
"Yeah, I've already crashed here too long."
"But Adrian's gonna flip when he comes back and you're gone."
Melissa glanced at the little girl in the stroller.
Victoria squatted down slowly and reached out to Strawberry in the stroller.
Strawberry grabbed her finger right away, and as Victoria gently shook it, Strawberry started giggling, even drooling a bit.
Victoria quickly reached for a tissue to wipe it, but as soon as she extended her hand, a sharp pain shot through her back. She had to slow down and then reached out with difficulty.
Melissa saw it all, "Victoria, why don't you just stay?"
Victoria said softly, "He is not Strawberry's dad."
"But in love, do we really need to draw such clear lines? Just 'cause they share some blood, does it mean they can't love the same person?"
Melissa could never wrap her head around it.Falling in love was just falling in love.
Why did people nowadays lack the courage to love someone?
Victoria gently wiped Strawberry's drool, then stood up with a resigned look.
"Or, have you always loved Alexander?"
Victoria let out a low chuckle, looking into the depths of the lake, which was already frozen with a few red leaves floating on it. Everything had long been settled, hadn't it?
What love was there to speak of?
She didn't want to degrade herself any further. She turned her gaze, "Do you still love that person now?"
"Of course not, I fell in love with Adrian's dad."
"I'll fall in love with another guy too, but that guy definitely won't have the last name Harrington."
Victoria smiled, her voice gentle yet firm.
Melissa saw that she was dead set on leaving, so she nodded, "I think I'll visit Strawberry often."
"Of course, you're always welcome."
Victoria readily agreed.
If it weren't for the meticulous care of Melissa and Adrian, she wouldn't have survived until now.
She said goodbye to Melissa. Frank and Eve Wood helped her load her luggage into the car, then went to hold Strawberry.
Victoria returned to her parents' home. This time, she didn't feel empty or lonely at all; instead, she felt very grounded.
Frank and Eve had arranged for someone to clean the place in advance. After that, Frank personally installed some surveillance to ensure the house's safety.
Eve draped a shawl over Victoria, who was sitting on the sofa, "Mrs. Harrington, be careful not to catch a cold."
"Thanks."
Eve was someone Frank had arranged for her after she came here, also from Ankenra City.
She usually did nanny work but actually had some combat skills.
Victoria had previously suggested they call her Victoria, but they couldn't break the habit.
The next morning, just as they had settled in, Adrian rushed back.
The divorce agreement was placed on her desk.
Victoria sat quietly on the couch, just smiling as she picked up the pen.
Just like before, she quietly scribbled her name.
Honestly, if Alexander didn't give a damn, she wouldn't have pushed for the divorce.
The marriage certificate had long stopped being something that tied them together.
They'd reached this point, and there was no turning back.
If he still wanted to be the husband on paper, fine.
But if he signed, fine too.
Adrian watched from the side, seeing Victoria so calmly and composedly sign her name, his tightly wound heart slowly relaxed.
"Does signing this mean I don't need to go back to handle the divorce stuff?"
"I haven't asked yet, but usually, doesn't the agreement kick in right after signing?"
Adrian wasn't sure either, but usually, once they signed the agreement, they had to go through the process.
Victoria silently looked at the name next to hers. Alexander's handwriting was still so strong and powerful, like it could tear through the paper with just a bit more force, but he stopped at just the right place.
Maybe ending it now was also just the right time.
"Adrian."
"What's up?"
Adrian was looking at the agreement when he heard her voice. He paused for a couple of seconds before looking up.
Victoria looked at him, smiling calmly and gratefully, "Thanks for this past year."
"You know I did it willingly."
Adrian didn't like hearing her say thank you, he never did.
For a long time, she could barely get out of bed. Her bones were pretty messed up. The reason she could stand now was because she knew her kid was still there.
She had almost died, but the knife that stabbed her missed its mark. Although she lost a lot of blood...
Maybe it was fate.
Strawberry was still safe in Victoria's womb.
Strawberry became her only reason to live.
When Strawberry first moved in her belly, he was right there. She was lying in bed, laughing and crying at the same time. For the next few days, she was mostly in that state.
She became more optimistic because of Strawberry. Her legs weren't the problem, it was mainly her spine. She couldn't sit for more than a few minutes without excruciating pain, but she kept trying.
He didn't know how much effort she put in to endure the great pain since then.
But seeing Victoria get better day by day, the dark cloud in Adrian's heart slowly lifted.
And now, he held her divorce agreement, signed by both her and Alexander.
But she was still saying thank you.
Everyone knew that thank you at a certain stage meant rejection.
He was indeed Alexander's cousin, and she was indeed Alexander's lover, but when they met, neither of them knew this.
Now she was already divorced.
"Victoria, I..."
"Adrian, don't. Promise me, never."
Victoria leaned in and held his hand. Adrian was stunned and looked down.
She rarely held his hand, but he felt like his heart was being tied to something.
Her hand gently held his, slowly removing the ring from his ring finger.
In the later stages of her pregnancy, the pressure on her back became increasingly intense. She suddenly went into labor before the due date. Before the C-section, fearing her old injuries would flare up, he carried her to the hospital, shouting for help. He really cared about her. After the delivery, her old injuries acted up, causing her so much pain she could barely breathe. He took meticulous care of her, and she couldn't ignore that. She remembered it all deeply, but...
"We can't be together. I'm sorry, I can't do it."
