Chapter 1029 Hypocrisy

Victoria gently touched his face, her fingertips brushing against the corner of his lips before she leaned in and gave him a soft, tender kiss.

Alexander just watched quietly, feeling the moment.

He suddenly felt a bit hypocritical.

In the past, if she dared to kiss him, he would have kissed her back fiercely. But now, he could only hold back.

When Diana called, he put the phone on speaker. "Hey, what's up?"

"I have to go on a business trip tomorrow, so I can't be with Victoria. Can you let her know?"

"Sure, I'll stay with her myself," Alexander said, glancing at Victoria.

Victoria heard that he would be staying with her and thought to herself, 'I don't need you.'

Having him at home was worse than him not being there at all.

She would feel more at ease with just the servants and Strawberry at home.

"Alright, I'll hang up now. Bye," Diana said before ending the call.

Alexander put the phone aside.

Frank came back from outside, "Mr. Harrington, it wasn't sent from abroad."

"Did you find the exact address?"

Alexander had already suspected this, but the specific person trying to scare Victoria still needed to be confirmed.

"Not yet, but we know it didn't come from abroad."

"Okay, keep investigating. I want the results before dark," Alexander said.

When Victoria heard Frank's voice, she moved away from Alexander's embrace and sat quietly beside him.

But she couldn't stop thinking about the thing she had touched, her hand still feeling numb and tingly, as if it were useless.

Frank quickly left again, and Alexander held her hand, asking, "Do you want some coffee?"

Victoria shook her head. Alexander then brought her some fruit, but she gently pushed the fruit plate away.

She didn't want anything. She didn't want to touch anything.

She didn't even want to feel her own hands.

That stiff, cold feeling made her feel like she was in agony.

This was the memory she wanted to erase.

Eloise heard that someone had sent a dead pigeon, and she rushed over before dinner.

The Harrington Mansion's servants supported her as she entered. "Where's Victoria? You all scared her, and I won't let this go."

Victoria was in the living room, listening to Strawberry play with a toy piano. Hearing Eloise's voice, she slowly stood up.

Strawberry heard Eloise too and looked up, smiling and greeting her.

"Strawberry is keeping Victoria company. That's wonderful," Eloise said as she walked to the sofa and sat down with the help of the servants.

She quietly observed Victoria before taking her hand. "Victoria, I'm here. Come sit down."

Victoria felt that Eloise's hand was different from Alexander's, but it was warm. She leaned against Eloise and sat down.

Eloise couldn't help but tear up.

Victoria had finally come home, only to be subjected to such intimidation.

Eloise saw a servant bringing coffee and immediately questioned, "What's wrong with you all? How could you give Victoria something without checking it first? Is this how you do your job?"

"Mrs. Eloise Harrington, we didn't think it through," the servants admitted, having already reflected on their mistake.

Everyone knew Eloise was reasonable, but she wanted to give Victoria an explanation and take everything seriously.

"Don't act all sensible now. Victoria's in this state because you didn't think things through. I've always said everything inside and outside the house needs to be carefully monitored. Only when it's confirmed safe should it be given to her."

Eloise continued to express her anger.

She was worried that Victoria had been frightened.

She had heard that Victoria had been out of sorts all afternoon, not eating or drinking, and constantly clenching her hands.

"Alright, we guarantee that this won't happen again," the servants promised.

"Seeing your sincere attitude, I won't pursue this further. But if it happens again, you'll pack your bags and leave. I don't need people who can't do their job properly," Eloise said.

The servants repeatedly agreed.

Victoria had been holding Eloise's hand, hoping she wouldn't blame everyone.

Eloise looked at her and said gently, "I know you don't want me to blame them, but if I don't, and you don't, they won't realize the gravity of their mistake. Today it was a pigeon; who knows what it could be tomorrow? You're already like this. If something worse happens, what will we do?"

Eloise's voice grew softer, genuinely worried about Victoria.

"Arabella is away on business. If she were here, she wouldn't just scold them a bit like I did. Our family doesn't keep useless people," Eloise said.

Victoria felt a bit nervous, but the nearby servants were very respectful. "Mrs. Eloise Harrington, don't worry. From now on, even if a pebble comes in, we'll check if it should go to Mrs. Victoria Harrington."

"We feel guilty for not taking better care of Mrs. Harrington. She's been through so much, and we weren't diligent enough."

Victoria felt tense. She hadn't blamed anyone.

Everyone thought it was a gift from her friends abroad, with a card and everything. Who would have known what was inside?

Even she had foolishly thought it was something fun, at most a prank.

No one could have expected it to be something like that.

Eloise looked at Victoria, seeing the anxiety in her eyes, and stopped scolding the servants. She asked, "Were you very scared?"

Victoria smiled, shaking her head, then nodded.

She didn't want Eloise to worry.

Eloise patted her hand. "Silly girl, I know your nature. You've never wanted to trouble your elders. But if our family doesn't care about our own, there's no humanity left."

Victoria felt touched by Eloise's words and smiled.

"I used to hope you and Alexander would have more children, to make our family bigger and livelier. But now, I just want you to be well. Nothing else matters," Eloise said sincerely.

Maybe it was her age, but Eloise felt increasingly powerless and just wanted everyone around her to be okay.

Victoria listened, not knowing how to respond, and leaned on Eloise's shoulder.

Eloise patted her arm and then looked outside. "Where's Alexander?"

"Mr. Harrington had some business at the company. He said he'd be back soon."

"What could be more important than Victoria?"

Eloise asked, dissatisfied.

At that moment, a car pulled into the driveway.

Eloise looked out the window and said to Victoria, "When he comes in, I'll give him a piece of my mind. How is he taking care of you?"
