Chapter 161 A Question of Trust
The car of Sebastian Montague sped away, leaving Victoria Kensington standing alone at the entrance of her apartment complex. A solitary raindrop kissed her cheek, causing her to tilt her head back instinctively and extend her hand. More drops soon found their way to her palm, announcing the onset of rain.
Her phone rang, breaking the silence. She leisurely fished it out of her bag, and upon seeing Alexander Harrington's name on the screen, she silenced it. With no urgency now, she began a leisurely stroll into the complex. The truth, it seemed, had finally surfaced.
Upon his arrival at the hospital, Sebastian was greeted with a powerful punch that sent him sprawling. The man in the tailored black suit turned away coldly after delivering the blow, leaving Sebastian on the ground, his eyes tracking the man's retreating figure. Some people, it seemed, were born into misfortune, destined to be the targets of blame and criticism.
Back at her apartment, Victoria took a shower before settling by the window with a glass of milk. As she peered through the rain-soaked glass, a car caught her eye. The vehicle seemed familiar, but it couldn't be. He should be at the hospital, by the side of his child's mother.
---
Morning found Victoria Kensington leaving her home, bag slung over her shoulder. At the entrance of her apartment complex, a familiar car was parked. The Harrington family driver, Uncle James, stood to one side, greeting her with, "Mrs. Harrington."
Approaching him, Victoria asked curiously, "Uncle James, what are you doing here?"
"Mrs. Harrington, the madam instructed that starting today, I’ll be driving you to and from work," James replied, his voice kind and indulgent. He didn’t wait for a reply. After thanking him with a respectful nod, Victoria stepped into the car, the door held open for her by James.
Upon arriving at the office building, she noticed Alexander Harrington tossing his car keys to the valet. As she ascended the steps, her pace involuntarily slowed. Dressed in crisp light-colored slacks and a white shirt, his tall and commanding presence was, to say the least, distracting. Her heartbeat fluctuated wildly, and she considered avoiding him.
"I was waiting for you," he said, causing her to halt and look at him.
Leaning casually against his lean waist, Alexander began walking towards her with confident strides. With each step he took, Victoria's heart pounded violently. His approach was calm, but to an onlooker, it was utterly electrifying.
"Why didn't you answer my call last night?" he asked suddenly.
Victoria remained silent. What good would answering have done? It wasn't as if the night would turn into day or the summer heat into a snowy winter.
Alexander reached out to take her hand, but she swiftly grasped the strap of her purse to avoid him. "Mr. Harrington, I need to go clock in."
"Victoria Kensington, you still don't trust me," he said, his voice tinged with disappointment.
Victoria fidgeted with her purse strap for a few seconds. He could think whatever he wanted. She merely nodded politely to her boss before turning to head inside.
Alexander followed her, a hint of frustration in his stride, as she headed towards the staff elevator. He quickened his pace and caught up just as Victoria and her colleagues were stepping inside. Lost in thought, she suddenly felt something was off.
"Good morning, boss."
"Morning, boss!" Voices echoed around her.
She looked up and there he was, standing right in front of the elevator, holding the door open. "Come out."
Why should she come out? She resisted inwardly, not wanting to move. But he was blocking the door, and pressing the button to close it wasn’t going to help now. And moreover...
"Miss Secretary, Mr. Harrington surely has something important for you."
"Yeah, you better go."
Two outgoing girls urged her on, while the rest of the onlookers turned their gaze towards her.
