Chapter 180 The Unspoken Question of Love

"Big brother?" Victoria Kensington's voice echoed in the room as she turned her gaze towards Alexander Harrington. He returned her look, his face unreadable, his silence heavy in the air.

Victoria found herself reflecting on his words from earlier that day. His statements, a blend of truth and falsehood, amused her. Deciding that it was best to keep him out of her thoughts, she made a move to leave.

However, her departure was hindered by a sudden, sharp pain in her ankle. Ignoring the discomfort, she attempted to quicken her pace, eager to escape the flirtatious banter that filled the room. Her efforts were thwarted by a gust of wind so fierce that she nearly lost her footing.

Alexander Harrington's gaze lingered on Victoria, his eyes tracking her until she paused at the doorway. His gaze dropped to her feet, his expression unreadable.

"Alex, I really don't know how things got to this point," Isabella Montgomery's voice broke the silence. She noticed Alexander's continued attention on Victoria and tightened her grip on his arm, desperate to reclaim his focus.

"Is that so?" His voice was indifferent, his cold eyes finally meeting hers.

"You've forgiven me once, you know I’d never do anything to upset you, I promise there won’t be a next time," Isabella pleaded, her hand jostling his arm.

Alexander's mind drifted to the image of Victoria carefully adjusting the cuff of his sleeve. He looked at Isabella, her eyes filled with an insatiable greed, and stated flatly, "Isabella Montgomery, I'm married."

"But you don't love her," Isabella retorted, certain of her claim.

Alexander's voice turned icy as he replied, "How do you know I don’t love? Men can say one thing and feel another." With those words, he turned and walked away.

Isabella was left standing alone, the bright morning sun making her feel dizzy. A sense of panic gripped her, threatening her sanity. When she later encountered Sebastian Montague in the hall, a wave of revulsion washed over her. He gave her a cursory glance before continuing on his way.

"Sebastian Montague," Isabella called out, stopping him in his tracks.

He turned to face her, his voice cool as he asked, "What can I do for you, Miss Montgomery?" Without uttering a word, Isabella strode over and slapped him hard across the face. His cheek reddened instantly from the impact.

At the lobby’s front desk, three customer service representatives stood in stunned silence. “You owe me, and you'll never be able to repay it in this lifetime,” Isabella declared, her voice echoing in the silent lobby. She turned and walked away, leaving Sebastian to silently absorb the blow. His gaze followed her retreating figure, his face a mask of icy indifference. What did he owe her? Shaking off the incident, he headed towards the exit.

From that night on, their interactions were strained, their relationship irrevocably altered. Isabella found herself growing to despise him. And him? Did he not also harbor resentment? He was haunted by his past and his actions that night.

Upon returning home, Isabella spent the day in deep thought. Realizing she could not influence Alexander Harrington, she decided to try her luck with Victoria Kensington. Given Victoria's age and experience, Isabella was confident she could succeed.

The following morning, Victoria Kensington was engrossed in frying her sliced English muffins when the doorbell rang. She turned off the gas and, favoring her injured ankle, limped to the door. "Vicky," Isabella greeted her with a smile, her demeanor gentle and humble.

Victoria regarded her visitor with confusion, unsure of Isabella's motives for the visit.

“I’ve come to apologize,” Isabella announced. Minutes later, they were seated on the living room sofa, Isabella earnestly explaining her intentions.

Victoria looked at her, puzzled. Apologize for what?

Isabella continued, “The other day, someone followed you and intended to harm you—it was my bodyguard.”

Victoria felt a tightness in her chest as she listened.

“But it wasn’t my doing. He's been with me for many years and knew I was upset recently because of your affair. He took it upon himself to cause you trouble. I’ve punished him, and I'm asking you to please forgive him, can you?” Isabella's voice softened as she leaned in, reaching out to grasp Victoria's hand.
