Chapter 553 A Lonely Birthday Night

Victoria stepped out of the shower and heard the rain pouring outside.

She put the birthday gift Alexander prepared in the walk-in closet. Despite the room's familiarity, she left and went to the window.

Though she had barely escaped earlier, she couldn't shake the feeling...

Victoria noticed strawberries on the table from the window. She walked over, picked them up, and locked the door before heading to the bed.

Just as Alexander, fresh from his shower, reached for the door handle, he heard the lock click. His brow furrowed in frustration.

Victoria hoped he'd sleep in the guest room tonight, but he paced restlessly outside.

Back in bed, she covered herself with the blanket and ate a few strawberries absentmindedly. Suddenly, her phone buzzed.

Ava sent a message, but the photo showed Adrian outside her room with something in his hand.

Ava texted again: [Adrian's been waiting for hours to give you your birthday gift in person.]

Victoria's heart tightened as she read the message.

Some feelings in life were too risky to entertain. She thought Adrian would understand his feelings had changed after their kiss scene today.

But Victoria forgot that while feelings can change, forgetting takes time.

Just like her feelings for Alexander.

Ava quickly called Victoria. "Do you want to call Adrian? Whether you come back tonight or not, he'll be exhausted for tomorrow's game scene if he keeps waiting."

Victoria considered calling Adrian back to his room but decided against it.

"No," Victoria said softly.

"Adrian really likes you," Ava pursued.

"But we both know nothing will happen between us."

They were once classmates, best friends who shared everything.

Now, they were colleagues, partners, and...

Regardless of their roles, they would eventually part ways.

Ava didn't think Victoria was wrong. She just asked, "Can I tell him what you said?"

"Yes," Victoria agreed.

"Victoria, will you and Mr. Harrington make up?" Ava asked.

Victoria held the strawberries Alexander had Edward bring from out of town. She heard the door but repeated, "No."

"Alright, I understand. I won't bother you anymore. Happy birthday. By the way. I'll give you your gift tomorrow."

"Okay," Victoria replied, ending the call.

As she was about to set the plate down and rest, she heard the door lock rotate. She scowled, narrowing her eyes as Alexander entered, clad in a dark blue robe. He secured the door and moved towards the bed, undoing his robe.

Victoria's heart raced as he got closer.

Alexander said softly, "You're talking to Adrian this late, huh?"

Victoria muttered, "You said you'd sleep in the guest room."

"I couldn't." With that, Alexander tossed his robe at the foot of the bed and slipped under the covers.

Victoria felt a cold sensation on her leg and quickly moved away, staring at him in disbelief. "What are you doing?"

"Sleeping."

"But..."

"Just sleeping under the same blanket," he reminded her.

Alexander had probably said this countless times, but Victoria remembered. Well, she didn't remember the exact number, but it was a lot.

What was Alexander up to?

He was 29 and still so good at lying.

Victoria advised, "Fine, you sleep. I'll go to the guest room."

As she started to get up, he pulled her back down. She lay on the soft pillow, her breath quickening as she looked at Alexander, who seemed to sink into the mattress.

"Did I say you could leave?" he whispered, his voice dripping with menace.

Victoria didn't dare say a word, afraid of making things worse. She just stared at him, trying to figure out what he wanted.

But she couldn't read him at all. Then he said again, "Just sleep here tonight. I promise I won't cross any lines, okay?"

Victoria didn't move; she just blinked her eyelashes in agreement. The room fell into an intense silence.

But Alexander didn't seem ready to get off her. He thought about how she once wanted to have his baby, how she wanted to build a family with him, and how worried she was when he pretended to be unconscious. His heart raced, and he couldn't resist leaning in to kiss her again.

Victoria's cool hand quickly covered his mouth. "You said you wouldn't cross any lines."

"But you touched my lips," he replied.

Victoria noticed the embarrassment in his eyes and quickly pulled her hand away. Just then, there was a knock at the door.

"Mr. Harrington, your cake is here," someone called from outside.

Victoria thought she must be hearing things. They had already eaten cake.

"Hold on," Alexander said softly to her as he got up to answer the door.

Victoria lay there, stunned until he returned with a cake, a bottle of wine, and some glasses. His hands were big enough to carry it all.

What was he up to now?

Victoria sat up, tucking her hair behind her ear, and watched him place the cake and wine on the nightstand. The cake was small and simple.

"We already had cake, right?" she said.

"This one's different," Alexander replied.

"How so?" Victoria asked, examining the cake. It looked like any other cake.

"I made this one myself this morning," he said, "No one else knows. I had Felix sneak it in and put it in the fridge."

Alexander lit a candle and turned off the lights. It was just one candle, but still, he had made the cake himself?

Victoria looked at the cake, wondering if it was even edible. What if he had poisoned it? He still had a wife, after all. She had seen their marriage certificate.

Alexander started to hum, "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you..."

Victoria's heart tightened. She looked from the cake to him, her eyes blurring with unexpected tears.

What was he doing? They had already sung the birthday song and made wishes downstairs.

"Close your eyes and make a wish," Alexander said seriously after finishing the song.

Victoria stared at him, completely baffled. But he looked so sincere.

Thinking it was best to get it over with, she closed her eyes briefly and then moved to blow out the candle.

"No wishing to leave me," she said. "And no wishing we can't be together."
