Chapter 969 Code Red
Then came days of continuous rain, compounded by Alexander's missed appointment.
"Hey, Tori."
"I'm here."
"I can't make it this week, something came up."
It was particularly quiet; there was no one else in the living room, only Victoria sitting on the sofa reading a book.
When she received the call, her mood shifted from happy to disappointed in just a few seconds, but more than anything, she felt a sense of worry.
The tone of Alexander's voice gave off a feeling of sadness.
So she quickly asked softly, "Is it just business matters?"
"Yes."
"Then you go ahead and take care of it. After all, all the money you make is for buying toys for Strawberry."
"I also need to buy toys for you."
Alexander chuckled, feeling disappointed that he couldn't make it on time.
Victoria smiled after hearing this, "Alright, I know you want to come. Just focus on your work."
"Okay, I'll come to you as soon as I'm done."
"Alright."
Victoria agreed and then hung up the phone.
The rain outside was getting heavier, as if foreshadowing something bad.
Victoria glanced outside, feeling unusually annoyed by the rain.
She recalled the night of her birthday when Alexander ran through the rain to see her, and then thought of the recent phone call.
He wanted to come, but was unfortunately delayed by something.
She wasn't worried that he was lying, but rather that her dream might be true, and that the continuous rain was indeed a bad omen.
Nothing should happen between them anymore.
Eve ran downstairs, "Mrs. Harrington, Ms. Harrington has a fever."
Victoria turned around and immediately got up to run upstairs.
100.5 degrees Fahrenheit, Victoria was very nervous, worried that Strawberry's fever would get worse. She first applied a fever patch to Strawberry, then looked at the heavy rain outside. She wanted to go to the hospital immediately, but calmed down and called a doctor she knew.
The doctor said that a common fever didn't require a hospital visit. She agreed but grew increasingly anxious.
Especially when Strawberry's fever reached 103 degrees Fahrenheit in the late night, Victoria dared not delay any longer. She called Eve and Frank and took Strawberry to the hospital.
After various tests, no other issues were found. Victoria stayed by Strawberry's side without a moment's rest.
Strawberry was Victoria's only child.
Victoria couldn't bear to let go of Strawberry's hand, feeling a heartache like being pricked by needles.
Strawberry was so delicate, such a small baby, how could she have such a high fever?
Victoria deeply understood why her mother cried when she had a fever as a child, and said she would rather suffer in her place.
It turned out that all parents' hearts were the same.
They all wanted to take their children's pain.
"Mrs. Harrington, should we call Mr. Harrington?"
Eve came in from outside, softly asking for Victoria's opinion.
"He's busy these days, don't tell him."
Victoria also lowered her voice.
If she troubled Alexander with something as minor as Strawberry's fever, she wouldn't be a qualified wife.
She would wait until Alexander was done with his work, or until Strawberry's fever subsided, before telling him.
Victoria raised her hand to touch Strawberry's forehead. Strawberry's cheeks were red, looking particularly pitiful.
Eve, hearing Victoria's decision, left the room and closed the door behind her. She shook her head at Frank outside and whispered, "Mrs. Harrington said not to tell Mr. Harrington about this for now."
Frank nodded. Strawberry was so young, they were especially worried, but there were many children with fevers in the hospital, and they knew they had to adjust their mindset.
But it seemed like Victoria had something on her mind, and Alexander also seemed to have a bad feeling.
Frank thought for a moment and made a call, "Code Red."
In this quiet hospital, on such a night, nothing could happen to Victoria and Strawberry.
After making arrangements, Frank turned to Eve, "The room next door has been rented. You should rest."
"I won't."
Eve turned around and stood next to him.
She habitually stood by his side, feeling safer there than anywhere else.
And perhaps because of her profession, she was never afraid of danger.
Her job, like Frank's, was to protect Victoria and Strawberry inside.
Besides, Alexander had just given them bonuses as a gift for her pregnancy.
Their house and car were all provided by Alexander; they couldn't abandon their duties.
Seeing Eve's insistence, Frank smiled helplessly, "You're as stubborn as ever."
"Yes."
She hadn't changed much over the years.
"But now we have a baby." Frank reminded softly.
Eve was moved, then looked up at him.
They had discussed it; from now on, they couldn't ignore their baby's safety.
Eve touched her flat belly and smiled at him, "I think I can stand with you at least until my belly gets bigger."
Frank, defeated by her stubbornness, said no more.
Later, there was a noise in the hallway. Frank instructed, "You stay here, I'll go check it out."
"Okay, be careful."
Eve agreed, watching Frank quietly walk down the corridor, becoming more vigilant.
There was a commotion downstairs. Frank saw the man who had been stalking them being captured in the hallway.
In just a few seconds, Frank's usually calm eyes showed tension, and he turned to run upstairs.
It was a stifling afternoon in Ankenra City, and as the rain poured down, Alexander's phone rang.
But there was no one in his office at the moment, only the phone ringing incessantly.
In the conference room, Alexander's brow was furrowed.
There were too many things to deal with that day, too many distractions, and he couldn't focus at all.
His chest felt tight, an inexplicable discomfort, as if something was trying to burst out, causing his chest to ache.
Less than an hour later, he stood up, "The meeting is adjourned for now."
Alexander didn't have his phone with him, which made him even more uneasy.
Everyone was puzzled by his behavior, and the speaker stopped, looking at him in confusion as he walked out.
His figure was solemn and isolated, and no one dared to object, only waiting quietly.
As Alexander walked, Graham caught up, "Mr. Harrington, your phone."
"Is it Victoria?"
"No, it's Mr. Jane."
Graham paused, then replied to Alexander.
Alexander felt a sense of unease, answering the call while walking towards the elevator.
By the time he reached his office, he had finished the call. He immediately found his phone on the desk and picked it up.
He considered himself usually calm and composed, but seeing the missed calls made him panic. He tried to suppress his emotions and dialed back.
He thought about the time difference; it was morning there. Why would Frank call him so early?
Frank's phone went unanswered, so he immediately dialed Victoria's number, and there was also no answer for a long time.
