Chapter 149 No Immediate Plans for Divorce
"So, it was Miss Montgomery all along... Vicky, why did you remain silent?" The question hung in the air, a testament to the misunderstandings and accusations that had been wrongly placed on Victoria Kensington.
She responded with a helpless smile, her voice barely above a whisper, "We're on the brink of divorce."
"Divorce?" Jasmine's heart stuttered at the revelation, but she quickly pieced together the puzzle. She murmured, more to herself than to Victoria, "Why grant her the satisfaction? She's the one who sabotaged your marriage.”
Victoria lowered her gaze, a melancholic smile gracing her lips. "She didn't destroy my marriage. Is Mr. Harrington available?"
"He is."
Jasmine nodded stiffly, a wave of sympathy washing over her for Victoria.
"I'll go see him now."
With those words, Victoria exited, leaving Jasmine alone with her thoughts. She couldn't help but recall the day Alexander Harrington had publicly announced his two-year marriage—a union that had been a well-kept secret.
Was their boss unveiling his own hidden truths?
A fresh wave of shock rippled through Jasmine, her mind struggling to process the situation.
What was truly happening here?
Everyone had believed that Miss Montgomery, now with child, was Mr. Harrington’s perfect match.
And now...
Victoria paused at the entrance of his office, taking a deep breath before knocking. Doubt gnawed at her; she was uncertain if she could sway him. Yet, she had to try. She couldn't continue living like this.
He’d referred to her as his wife in public. How could he not want a divorce?
"Enter."
The deep, commanding voice echoed from within.
As she opened the door, her gaze met his stern expression, his focus on the work sprawled across his large desk. In that moment, his presence invaded her heart, stirring a whirlwind of emotions within her.
Victoria stood frozen, her eyes locked on him, momentarily forgetting to step inside.
Alexander Harrington glanced up, barely acknowledging Victoria's presence at the doorway.
Regaining her composure, Victoria slowly entered, shutting the door behind her as she approached his desk.
Without lifting his gaze from his paperwork, Alexander spoke, “Be quick, I have a meeting in ten minutes.”
"I want a divorce," she stated, her voice firm, a plea she was weary of repeating.
Her head bowed, and when silence met her request, she was compelled to look up at him.
How many more scars did he intend to inflict on her heart before he was satisfied?
Alexander Harrington signed his name with a flourish at the bottom of a document, setting it aside before responding with an air of indifference, “I'm sorry, but I have no immediate plans for a divorce.”
His tone was courteous, yet it held a frosty edge. Victoria stood there, her gaze fixed on him, her fingers nervously twisting together.
Alexander glanced up at her, his voice cutting through the silence, "If you wish to resign, submit your notice and find a replacement. Otherwise, return to your work."
A heavy silence fell between them as Victoria stared at him, confusion etching her features.
"In your eyes, the secretary position might seem insignificant, but to me and everyone else in this building, it's crucial."
His dismissive demeanor didn't spare her a second glance as he capped his pen, but his words, carefully chosen, served as a reminder of her perceived irresponsibility.
Victoria continued to look at him, a flush creeping up her neck and staining her cheeks. In a moment of vulnerability, she bit her lip, drew a sharp breath, and confronted his icy demeanor, "Are you in love with me?"
Alexander Harrington looked up at her slowly, a hint of mockery flickering in his eyes.
