Chapter 223 The Unforeseen Incarceration
Naomi's countenance drained of color, her disbelief palpable at the audaciousness of Madam's words.
Rohans, however, maintained a semblance of calm, offering an apology on Naomi's behalf. "Madam, her words are born of concern for our daughter, nothing more. I assure you, I will address this with her once we return home."
Naomi's retort was swift and biting. "Nonsense? If any harm befalls Isabella, I swear I'll make this wretch pay." Her words hung in the air as the elevator doors slid open once more.
A towering figure emerged from the elevator, a chilling aura radiating from him. All eyes turned in his direction, including Victoria's.
"Alexander, your timing is impeccable. This woman is responsible for Isabella's miscarriage. What course of action do you propose?" Naomi's plea for justice was directed at Alexander, her hope pinned on him.
Alexander moved towards Victoria, his gaze falling upon her. She returned his look, a sense of foreboding settling in her heart.
"What should we do?" Alexander's voice was low, his gaze shifting from Victoria to Naomi. His question hung in the air, the tension palpable.
"Send her to prison, of course. Let her rot there for the rest of her days," Naomi's words were laced with venom, her intentions clear. Victoria felt a chill run down her spine. Was she to be incarcerated? To spend her remaining days behind bars, like some tragic heroine in a tale of woe?
"Very well, she shall be sent to prison," Alexander's voice was as icy as ever. His words elicited shocked glances from both Victoria and Madam.
Madam began to question the identity of the man standing before her. Could this really be her grandson? In her anxiety, she called for someone to fetch him, unable to believe that a member of the esteemed Montgomery family could behave so irrationally.
Victoria felt as though she was being swallowed by a pit of despair. She couldn't reconcile the man she knew as her husband with the man who was prepared to send her to prison for another woman's sake.
Memories flooded back to her. Alexander had claimed that the child wasn't his, that it belonged to Sebastian. He had professed no love for the other woman, insisting that his actions were merely to protect the child and prove his innocence.
But women can be so naive. He had spent countless nights at her home, playing the part of the doting husband awaiting his wife's return. She had been a fool to believe him.
Her vision blurred until a familiar voice brought her back to reality.
"Alexander, you... you monster!" Madam's fury was palpable, her words cut short as a wave of dizziness overcame her. She collapsed into Victoria's arms.
"Grandma, Grandma!" Victoria's cry filled the room as she caught the falling woman.
"Let him go. I don't want to see him again. The Harrington family has no need for a child like him," Madam's words were barely a whisper as she slumped in Victoria's arms. Victoria's gaze met Alexander's, a silent exchange passing between them.
---
An hour later, the news of Isabella's miscarriage was confirmed. Madam was still in the hospital room, receiving treatment. Victoria emerged from Madam's room to find Alexander waiting outside.
"How is Grandma?" Alexander's voice was soft, his concern evident.
"Her blood pressure has stabilized, but she doesn't want to see you," Victoria's voice was devoid of emotion. She was acutely aware of the man standing before her, a man who could send her to prison without a second thought. She knew fear. She had dared to resist him, but that didn't mean she was oblivious to his immense power.
"Why did you go out with Isabella again?" Alexander's question was stern, his gaze fixed on her bruised face.
Victoria's hands twisted nervously as she struggled to find the right words. She had rushed out after receiving a phone call, and no one knew she had gone to see Isabella. There were no witnesses. During that time, Isabella had been alone with her, and she had miscarried. The Montgomery family blamed her, but she had no defense.
"Victoria." Alexander's voice was a warning. As his hand moved towards her face, Victoria instinctively stepped back.
