Chapter 286 A Burglary

"Sorry, we're late," Alexander murmured as he ushered her into the private dining room. This was a first for his friends, witnessing Alexander enter hand in hand with a woman. It was as if he was publicly declaring their relationship. Isabella, however, was seething with suppressed rage. Her fists clenched tightly at her sides as she struggled to maintain her composure. For her, this was the beginning of a love war. Jasmine, on the contrary, was filled with excitement and a sense of relief. "Is this your way of going public?" Edward inquired, "If anyone asks if you two are together, should I affirm it?" "Yes," Alexander responded without hesitation. Edward immediately grasped the situation. Alexander wanted the world to know about their relationship, didn't he?"Would you mind switching seats?" Alexander suddenly called out. The person addressed slowly raised his head, offering an awkward smile. "Apologies, I'm accustomed to sitting next to you."Isabella rose from her seat, relinquishing her place next to Alexander. The seat had originally been reserved for Victoria. Victoria was uncertain about whether to sit when Alexander interjected, "Hold on a moment." To everyone's surprise, Alexander moved the chair to the back, replacing it with another. He then gently urged Victoria, "Please, have a seat now." Victoria was taken aback. Despite feeling slightly embarrassed, she didn't want to draw more attention to herself and promptly took the seat. "Now that everyone is acquainted, I see no need for introductions. Let's commence with our meal," Alexander declared, offering no explanation for the seat change. Once seated, he poured water for Victoria and gave instructions to the staff. "Understood, sir," the server at the door responded, immediately moving to serve the dishes. Alexander set down the water jug and promptly took Victoria's hand. Their hands fit perfectly together, her delicate, soft skin comforting to his touch. Victoria was puzzled by his actions, but after a few futile attempts to withdraw her hand, she relented. Any further resistance would only draw more attention. Following Alexander's instructions, Sebastian had pre-ordered the dishes. Thus, the food was served promptly. Isabella sat nearby, observing Victoria occupying the seat that was once hers. The situation seemed almost comical. As Victoria awkwardly held her water cup in her left hand, Isabella noticed the silk scarf adorning Victoria's wrist. "Victoria, I noticed you've been wearing a scarf on your wrist lately. It's not particularly cold. Did you injure your wrist?" she asked. Victoria felt a wave of panic wash over her. She hadn't even told Alexander about the injury, let alone wanted others to know. Alexander, who was holding her hand under the table, interjected, "Yes, she was injured."Victoria shot Alexander a surprised look. "Really? How did she get hurt? Was it during a fight about a divorce?" Isabella feigned casual conversation, though her surprise was genuine. Seeing the panic on Victoria's face, Isabella knew she had struck a nerve and decided to probe further. "An intruder broke into my wife's home and injured her," Alexander revealed. The room fell into an eerie silence. "Miss Montgomery, do you have any other inquiries?" Alexander's voice was low, his gaze fixed on Isabella's pale face. "Was it really a burglary?" Isabella persisted, not ready to back down. Had Victoria told Alexander it was a burglary? How intriguing. How audacious of her. The intruder clearly had more sinister intentions!
