Chapter 211
Watching her sudden childlike vulnerability gripped Alexander's heart, "I'm just asking who you like?"
But whom could she like? He was a mess, yet she couldn't let go. Maybe she was ruined too. Otherwise, why would she love a man who betrayed her? Wasn't love at first sight supposed to be a fleeting temptation that quickly faded away? Then why did her heart still flutter at the sight of him?
The thought gnawed at him – had she really felt nothing when he kissed her?
She was terrified, yes, but…
She harbored no resentment towards his presence, not in the slightest. The only thing that churned her stomach into a pit of revulsion was the knowledge of his past dalliances with other women. Yet, she found herself unable to shake off the feeling.
She was unable to erase the memory of their first encounter years ago at the airport. The memory of the time they spent alone after a birthday party was etched deeply into her mind. She chastised herself, feeling foolish for her inability to forget.
Was she destined to be ensnared for a lifetime by a single glance, a fleeting moment? She couldn't make sense of it. She excelled in every other aspect of her life, so why did she falter so when it came to matters of the heart?
Tears streamed down her cheeks uncontrollably, sending him into a panic. He was left with no choice but to wipe her tears away and plead, "Stop crying, Victoria Kensington, please stop."
Alexander Harrington was seldom at a loss for what to do, even when a woman claimed she was carrying his child. All she had wanted was marriage, but he never cared. What did it matter whose husband he was?
He thought he was indifferent towards her, but now he was a mess of emotions, coaxing her gently, "Please stop crying, Victoria Kensington, please, okay?"
Upon hearing his plea, Victoria's trembling and sobbing momentarily ceased. She paused to look at him before breaking down once again.
Alexander was tormented, "Stop it, we don't have to do anything."
Victoria stopped at his words, only to burst into tears once more. She had been truly terrified. He kept wiping her tears, whispering comfortingly, "It was just a scare, nothing real."
A scare? He didn't truly want her? Victoria looked at him, her tears finally halting, puzzled. His actions seemed far from simply trying to scare her. Was this his twisted way of intimidation?
Victoria felt that it was utterly cruel of him to scare her, a girl with no such experiences. Finally, as her tears dried, Alexander exhaled, noticing her still looking distressed and coaxed softly, "How about we go have some cake?"
Cake? He couldn't continue, "To think I came looking for you with a cake, leaving everyone behind, and then..."
He felt miserable. To be so fixated on someone, only to find her in such an intimate moment with another man in the break room. He was devastated. And the worst part was, she had no clue.
Victoria, still a bit stunned, mumbled in protest, "But why... why did you leave everyone to come find me?"
Alexander's heart skipped a beat. Why would he leave so many people behind and buy a cake to see her? It was his birthday, after all. People should be buying cakes for him.
Alexander Harrington looked at her, his face suddenly flushed with an attempt to hold back his emotions, but quickly, he put on a stern façade, "Why else? Shouldn't a wife know these things?"
"Huh?" she murmured in confusion. She genuinely had no clue. Alexander couldn't bear to pull away from her, especially when he glanced down at the shirt she wore, disheveled from his own hands, which made his breath grow heavy.
