Chapter 206 Mr. Harrington's Heartache

Victoria Kensington's breath hitched in her throat as they stepped into the elevator. It was only then that she allowed herself to gasp for air, her shoulders sagging with the weight of exhaustion.

Alexander Harrington, upon escorting Isabella Montgomery and catching sight of Adrian's car, paid it no mind. The notion of Isabella dining with Adrian was ludicrous. Could they possibly have so much to converse about?

He was intrigued to see how they would maintain a conversation across the vast expanse of the towering skyscraper. If she failed to complete her work that night, she wouldn't be leaving the office.

Adrian, too, noticed Alexander Harrington leading Isabella Montgomery away. He cast a glance back at the looming building. The hour was already past seven; darkness was beginning to shroud the city. The boss had already departed, yet the secretary remained at her post.

He waited a while longer until his phone broke the silence. "Adrian, I'm swamped with work. Go find some other friends to hang out with," she said softly, her voice tinged with regret.

"It's alright; I'll read some scripts and keep waiting. Time flies," he replied nonchalantly.

"I probably won't finish tonight. Don't wait for me."

Victoria Kensington's gaze fell upon the towering stack of documents before her, her irritation mounting with each passing moment. Why bother organizing them at all? How many times did they need to be sorted in a year before it was enough? Yet, she couldn't ignore the boss's orders.

Adrian cast one last look at the building before driving away. However, half an hour later, Victoria’s phone rang again. "Can you come down to pick me up?" he asked.

"Huh?”

"I brought dinner, dummy. You planning to starve yourself?"

"..."

Tears welled up in her eyes. She hung up the phone and sprinted for the elevator. Upon reaching the ground floor and spotting a man clad in a white tracksuit, holding sushi boxes, she hesitated for a moment before briskly walking towards him.

"How did you..." she began.

"Just take me up," he interrupted.

"Okay," Victoria responded, casting a quick glance around before leading him inside.

Adrian's laughter echoed in the elevator, and she found herself giggling along. Some men could be so petty, using someone’s affection to torment them. But there were also good people.

Victoria considered herself fortunate to have Adrian as a friend. As her only friend since relocating from the States, their bond was invaluable. He was two months her senior, and she had always regarded him as an older brother.

Ever since her parents' passing, Adrian had been a source of immense comfort, causing her to treasure their friendship even more.

There were plenty of gifts, all extravagant, but the thrill of such things had long since faded for him.

His social circle had remained relatively unchanged over the years.

"Why didn't your better half come along?"

Benjamin Beaumont had a hunch that Alexander's birthday would take an unexpected turn this year.

Alexander's heart clenched at the question.

He would have brought her if only she had given him the opportunity.

What had she said again?

Ah, yes. She had called him old, claimed they had nothing in common, as if they were speaking different languages, wasn't it?

Ha.

Who was the chicken, and who was the duck?

All that education and yet such...nonsense that she spoke.

"Vicky's stuck working overtime. But it's just as well she's not here—we'd be less comfortable with her around, after all these years we've known each other," Isabella Montgomery said.

Benjamin cast a glance at the woman by Alexander's side, offered a polite, awkward smile, then leaned in close to Alexander. "What's really going on?"

Alexander didn't respond; he simply rose to his feet, visibly agitated.

"Alex."

Isabella attempted to rise with him, but Alexander gently pressed her shoulder. "Stay here. Don't follow."

He just needed some air—to be alone for a while.

Isabella felt a pang of unease.

She was worried he might go looking for Victoria Kensington.

At this late hour, if he went after her...

"I'll check on him," Benjamin said quietly, reassuring her.

"Mhm."

Isabella watched Benjamin leave, her anxiety subsiding somewhat.

Outside, Alexander stood by the window, shrouded in the dark hues of the night, looking utterly worn and defeated.

Benjamin approached, standing beside him. "What's the matter?"

"She said she might be falling for Adrian."
