Chapter 684 Yes, He Was the One Who Actually Died

"Congrats to her," Alexander said, all chill, as he turned to leave.

Adrian just stood there, letting the smoke drift away. For some reason, he felt like he'd won. He was grinning, but it left a sour taste in his mouth.

"Alex, I ain't passing that message for you," Adrian suddenly yelled at Alexander, who was already at the stairs.

Alexander paused for a sec but then kept going. He didn't need anyone to pass on his words. Didn't need it at all.

But that night, sleep was a no-show for him.

Shoure called again, "Oh, by the way, I meant to tell you that night, I think I saw Victoria."

Later, Alexander got a photo. It was a bit blurry, but yeah, that was Victoria. Even though the pic was fuzzy and it had been a year, he recognized her right away.

She was bundled up in a thick down jacket, carrying a simple leather bag. Her long hair was chopped short, but it was definitely her.

Some people changed in every way, but the vibe stayed the same.

He wanted to say, even if she turned to ashes, he'd still know it was her. Sounded kinda crazy, but it was true.

She gave back the wedding ring, and that was that.

Shoure got back from abroad and headed straight to the office. After giving Alexander the rundown, he couldn't help but ask, "I chased her that day but couldn't catch up. You think it was really her?"

"Nope," Alexander shot back without missing a beat.

Shoure stared at him. Even though Alexander denied it, his face said otherwise. Even Janaye said it looked too much like her. Hair cut short, looking a bit worn out, but that feeling—Janaye was sure it was Victoria.

"Big meeting next week, lots of important folks. Should I still go?"

"Yeah."

"But I'm kinda low on the totem pole for that."

Shoure grumbled.

Alexander just gave him a cold look and said, "Then no one goes."

"That'd be a slap in the face to the local bigwigs. We're making money on their turf, after all."

Shoure didn't get it. That wasn't something a savvy businessman would say.

"In other words, we better not miss it," Alexander said again, all cool.

Shoure got the hint and shut up.

"Scared to see Victoria?" Shoure asked.

"What am I scared of?" Alexander hesitated for a couple of seconds and shot him a look.

What was he scared of?

Adrian said Victoria was pregnant, and he didn't care?

"If you're not scared, why not go? You usually hit up these big events yourself."

"If you don't wanna go, send someone else. Don't try to push my buttons," Alexander said, opening his laptop.

Shoure clammed up, but after leaving, he ran into Janaye and couldn't help but sigh, "Figure out a way to make him go."

"How?" Janaye was just as eager.

"What's he most scared of?"

Janaye shook her head, clueless.

"Dummy, it's Victoria being taken away."

Janaye was stunned.

"If Victoria lost her memory, married some other dude, and even had a kid."

"You might as well say Victoria didn't miscarry and had Mr. Harrington's kid."

"Now that's an idea." Shoure exclaimed.

Janaye thought Shoure was just talking out of his ass, but then he clapped his hands like he was actually gonna run with the idea.

Janaye's eyes went wide. "Babe, you gotta be kidding me, right?"

Shoure just grinned, patted her shoulder, and walked off.

Janaye suddenly felt a chill. Was he really gonna tell Alexander that?

If Alexander found out it was her idea, she was so getting canned.

Shoure knew his way around Photoshop. He grabbed a couple of pics from his phone, did some quick edits, and sent them to Alexander a few minutes later.

Alexander was still buried in emails. He opened Facebook, saw the photo, and his face stayed blank.

Shoure didn't get a reply and started to sweat a bit.

He just wanted to give Alexander a reason to go. Did Alexander really not wanna go?

Was he really ready to let go of the past?

If so, then what Shoure did was totally pointless.

That evening, Alexander went to dinner with Edward and the crew. Olivia went to pick up the kid. When she saw Alexander holding Orange, she couldn't help but say, "Why's Mr. Harrington holding her? We can't afford such an honor. Come here, let me hold you."

Alexander watched as Olivia took the kid from his arms without a word. He knew Olivia had it out for him. Ever since Victoria left, Olivia was like a porcupine around him.

After Olivia took Orange, the kid kept looking at Alexander, then reached out her hand towards him.

Alexander finally looked up, then grabbed his coat. "I'm gonna make a call."

"Who you calling? I heard a lot of folks have been hitting up the Harringtons for marriage alliances lately. Mr. Harrington, you got another woman?"

Olivia suddenly shot at him.

Alexander stopped at the door, turned back, and sighed. "Why do you always talk to me like this?"

"How should I talk? Victoria's got nothing left and you're out here flirting with other women?"

"So what should I do? Stay single for someone who's already dead?"

Alexander shot back.

"Dead? Is she really dead? Or just dead to you?"

Edward, sitting nearby, was freaked out. Seeing his daughter scared too, he quickly and quietly took Orange into his arms, then tugged at Olivia's sleeve. But Olivia glared at him, "Why are you pulling me? He can treat Victoria as dead and date other women without a divorce. Why can't I speak up?"

"So you're playing the justice warrior for her?"

Alexander found it kinda funny.

"Why can't I? Don't forget, you're the one who introduced me to her, who wanted me to be her friend."

Olivia reminded him.

Alexander's lips twitched, but he didn't say anything. After staring at her for a few seconds, he turned and walked out.

He knew why Olivia was like this and honestly, he didn't care.

"Alexander, I hope you never bother Victoria again. It's best if you just disappear from her life, so she won't suffer anymore."

Olivia didn't get how he could be so cold.

Did he really not care anymore?

"You never truly loved her. You only brought her pain. You're nothing but a useless coward."

"Olivia."

Even Benjamin thought she was going too far.

But Olivia didn't stop, "Where's the Alexander who'd sacrifice everything for her and protect her? He's the one who's really dead, isn't he?"

Yes, he was the one who actually died.
