Chapter 137 A Deliberate Reminder of Her Marital Status

Isabella cast a furtive glance over her shoulder before posing her question, "Are you claiming the front seat?"

A pause ensued, filling the air with a palpable tension.

Victoria found herself ensnared in the grip of an awkward silence, puzzled by the sudden request for his girlfriend to occupy the back seat.

"Victoria," the voice belonged to Charleston, the man they had just entered into a contract with that very morning. A man in his prime, still unwed, he was the quintessential eligible bachelor.

His high-end sports car was parked a short distance away. "Come on, climb into my car," he beckoned.

Charleston exited his vehicle, elegantly opening the passenger door, and gesturing for her to enter.

Victoria hesitated, but soon realized that remaining would only exacerbate the awkwardness.

Alexander had not anticipated her willingness to enter another man's car without even a cursory nod or greeting.

"Mr. Harrington, I'll see you at the hotel shortly," Charleston announced. With that, he climbed back into the car and whisked Victoria away.

Throughout the drive to the hotel, Isabella could sense the icy demeanor emanating from Alexander.

The car felt frigid, as though it might freeze her to her very core.

She stole a glance at him, reaching out tentatively to touch his arm, but he recoiled, his brow furrowed in displeasure. "Isabella, don't," he warned.

"What's wrong with you?" she queried.

Alexander turned to face her, "Wasn't my message clear enough the other day?"

"The child is yours, I swear it," Isabella implored, her voice barely above a whisper.

A wry smile played on Alexander's lips as they drove past a jewelry store. He paused, his hands still gripping the steering wheel, lost in his thoughts.

He began to question whether he was overreacting.

If she didn't love him, why should he allow himself to become so agitated?

What if she genuinely desired a fresh start post-divorce?

Remembering the words she had uttered that morning in front of the elderly woman and his mother, he reignited the car's engine.

Meanwhile, Isabella was paralyzed with fear.

He had halted the car precisely where her mother had suggested they purchase an engagement ring.

Yes, she had contemplated rings, but him...

Why had he stopped?

Isabella didn't dare to reach out to him again. Her heart was a tangled knot of emotions, knowing she had to endure, to restrain herself, she couldn't show signs of defeat upon their return.

'That girl... How can she even compare to me? As my mom often says, I have the backing of the mighty Montgomery Corporation, while that poor girl, she doesn't even have parents - they'd passed away.' Isabella mused.

Upon arriving at the hotel, Alexander was in a foul mood. Especially upon seeing Victoria already comfortably settled in the private room with Charleston, their chairs dangerously close, and Charleston himself pouring her coffee.

In fact, he had planned to purchase a ring for her.

But now, he was uncertain if he should proceed.

"Look at you, having clients pour your coffee." Alexander sauntered in and took his seat at the head of the table, his tone laced with reproach.

Victoria swiveled towards him, puzzled by his sudden irritation.

"It's perfectly fine for a man to serve a lady, right, Charleston?" Isabella interjected, attempting to diffuse the tension.

"Absolutely, serving a beauty like Victoria is something I'd welcome any day," Charleston replied, his attention focused solely on Victoria.

Victoria was no stranger to being courted by clients or having her coffee poured. She knew all she had to do was sit back and observe. No one had ever found anything wrong with it.

Until he returned.

"But what if Victoria is already married?" Alexander suddenly interjected.

Charleston, caught off guard, quickly glanced at Alexander.

Alexander, however, shifted his gaze to Victoria.

Victoria, who had been petrified, looked at him numbly. As soon as their eyes met, her heart pounded in her chest.

"Victoria is already married? But as far as I'm aware, Victoria is only twenty-three and, just this afternoon, she confirmed she's single." Charleston recounted what he knew.

He had inquired before and had heard that she was always on her own.

Alexander offered a faint smile and asked, "Victoria, are you single?"
