Chapter 273 His Annoyance

Victoria didn't dare to meet Alexander's gaze. A blush of embarrassment crept up her cheeks as she straightened her posture, a subtle attempt to regain some semblance of control.

Alexander, however, remained fixated on her. His mind wandered back to the day he heard her hoarse voice over the phone. Now, as he studied her, he noticed her diminished frame. He wondered if she was sick.

"Are you okay?" Alexander queried.

"What?" Victoria responded, her confusion evident. She had returned with the intention of finalizing their divorce, after all.

A wave of annoyance washed over Alexander, his gaze turning icy.

Nicolas and Eloise observed the exchange, their disappointment growing as neither Victoria nor Alexander seemed willing to reveal the truth.

"Mr. Nicolas, Mrs. Eloise, Mr. Alexander, Mrs. Victoria, dinner is ready. Will you eat now?"
"Okay, let's eat. We don't have anything else to say," Eloise responded, rising to her feet.

Victoria moved to assist her, and Eloise whispered, "If you're unhappy, don't hesitate to berate him, to scold him."

"Grandma, I'm not unhappy," Victoria replied, as they walked ahead, engaged in hushed conversation.

Eloise felt a pang of frustration. She was certain that Victoria harbored resentment towards Alexander, yet she seemed to suppress her true feelings. If it were Nicolas, Eloise would have chastised him long ago.

Alexander trailed behind Nicolas, overhearing his sigh. He cast a questioning glance at Nicolas, who remained silent. Alexander was perplexed. It seemed as though Eloise and Nicolas believed someone between him and Victoria deserved reprimand, and he was the likely candidate.

After dinner, Alexander escorted Victoria back to her apartment. As they passed the seaside, Victoria spoke up, "I had planned to return this afternoon and proceed directly to the family court, but I hadn't anticipated your meeting."

"Do you resent me for the delay?" Alexander asked, turning to face her.

Victoria looked at him, puzzled. "No, I was concerned you might think I was intentionally stalling."

She recalled the urgency in his voice during their phone conversation. It felt as though she had hindered his pursuit of another romantic endeavor. Victoria was unsure of how many relationships Alexander had been involved in, or how many women he had courted.

Alexander continued to drive, his annoyance growing. It wasn't until they reached the main road in the southern part of the city that Victoria broached the subject again.

"So, shall we go to the family court tomorrow? If so, should we aim for eight or nine in the morning?" Victoria cautiously sought Alexander's input, believing it was necessary to coordinate their schedules.

Suddenly, Alexander halted the car, his frustration palpable. "Get out."

Victoria was taken aback, her eyes wide with confusion. "Alright, but how should we plan for tomorrow?"

"I said, get out," Alexander reiterated.

"Okay." Victoria complied, exiting the car with her bag in tow.

Alexander swiftly turned the car around and drove off, leaving Victoria standing alone on the roadside. She watched as his car receded into the distance, a sense of sadness welling up within her. Tears began to fill her eyes.

Victoria couldn't comprehend his behavior. 'What does he want? I was merely asking about our court appointment tomorrow. Why is he so impatient? I can't read his mind. I can't anticipate his thoughts without asking.'

Victoria had made every effort to suppress her emotions, to refrain from questioning Alexander. Yet, he remained oblivious to her struggles.

She had resorted to alcohol to induce sleep, had secured her home with multiple locks and self-defense tools, yet she was still terrified. Victoria feared that she might die alone, unnoticed. She feared never seeing Alexander again, never confessing that she had been smitten with him at first sight. But she dared not admit that she had fallen in love with him.

Victoria feared dying with her feelings unexpressed. As Alexander's car disappeared from sight, she wiped her tears, hoisted her bag onto her back, and trudged towards her apartment.

After all, everyone entered and left this world alone. She soon regained her composure, grateful that her apartment was not far off.
