Chapter 258 The Man of the House

"Hi, Grandma," Victoria said.

"Sweetheart, is it true that you gave him a wedding ring?" Madam asked in a serious tone.

"Uh? Well, that's..." Victoria started, only to be interrupted by Alexander's timely cough.

Madam angled the phone towards Alexander. "That rascal is right here."

Arabella observed Alexander in silence, feigning indifference, and sighed in resignation. He had wished for a meeting. Why did he have to resort to such a pretense?

Fortunately, Madam harbored a deep affection for Alexander and was willing to play along.

Alexander lifted his gaze to the screen, while Victoria hastily retreated from view upon spotting him, leaving only an unmade bed in his sight.

Scattered across the bed were a few pieces of lingerie, and Victoria...

Clad only in a thin camisole and lace shorts, Victoria's usually concealed legs were on full display. What man could resist such a sight? Given Alexander's youthful age and surging hormones, continued exposure to such a scene would undoubtedly result in a nosebleed.

Victoria, positioned behind the phone stand, caught sight of the items on the bed and the sudden silence on the other end of the line. She hurriedly rushed over to tidy up, not daring to lift her gaze.

She hastily found an excuse to terminate the video call, suggesting, "Grandma, could you end the call first? I'll tidy up the room and call you back."

"Ah, okay," Madam agreed.

Once the line went silent, Victoria finally allowed herself to straighten up and draw a breath, clutching her personal items. However, in a mere blink of an eye, she noticed the phone mounted on the stand at the foot of the bed...

She couldn't see it clearly, but...

Victoria's lips moved, attempting to utter a request for him to end the call. But for a long time, she couldn't voice a single word. She merely clung to her personal items, muffling the pounding of her heart, and swiftly slipped away.

Alexander found himself consumed by thoughts of Victoria. And it wasn't just a casual yearning.

Victoria still wore the wedding ring he had compelled her to wear upon her departure, yet she showed no signs of returning. What could be the reason for this? Alexander was intrigued by her physique. Who wouldn't be enticed by such a tantalizing form? But...

His eyes gradually hardened, his gaze growing distant. Did she intend to wear that ring for the rest of her life in Country M? If she loved him, why didn't she return? If she didn't, why didn't she remove the ring? Regardless, she was far away now, and he was powerless to intervene.

"Have you ended the call yet? Hey, why haven't you disconnected? Why are you spying on Vicky?" Madam demanded hastily.

Alexander remained silent, much like she couldn't produce any sound either. During her return to Country M, Victoria hadn't had the opportunity to rekindle the emotions she once harbored for this place.

She had grown up here, but at this moment, she felt a pang of loneliness. The people who had been part of her upbringing were no longer present. Everything was as it had been, except for the absence of the person who loved her most. She tried to convince herself that they were merely traveling to another place.

In her youth, there were instances when her parents desired a date and left her home alone. Now, only a bitter memory remained. Had Victoria known her parents would part ways so soon, she would have pleaded with them to take her along.

The following morning, as Alexander departed for work, he chanced upon Jasmine making a phone call. "What time will you arrive? Oh, alright, I'll be there shortly. That's all."

Upon ending the call, Jasmine noticed Alexander's presence and promptly greeted him, "Boss."

"Are you going out?" Alexander asked.

"Yes," Jasmine answered.

Unsure of what excuse to offer, Jasmine pondered for a moment before deciding on honesty. "Boss, the windows at Vicky's apartment are being installed today."

Alexander nodded in acknowledgment and proceeded towards his office. However, an hour later, he found himself at her apartment. The workers were engrossed in their tasks when the contractor asked, "Are you the man of the house?"

"Yes." Alexander, engrossed in examining his flight ticket, responded affirmatively to the term "man of the house" with a deep, resonating tone.
