Chapter 191 Mr. Harrington Takes a Hit

The nanny's distress was palpable. Downstairs, Arabella Harrington and Victoria Kensington clutched their chests, their hearts pounding with anxiety. Yet, Mrs. Harrington remained composed, her voice steady as she reassured, "It's fine, he probably just received a stern reprimand."

Arabella, aware of the gravity of the situation, dared not interject.

Victoria, noticing Arabella's distress, turned to Mrs. Harrington and asked, "Grandma, why would he warrant such a scolding? Has Alexander Harrington committed some wrongdoing?"

Mrs. Harrington's heart ached at the question. Her gentle demeanor faltered as she considered the trials she had endured. Tears welled in her eyes as she lamented, "My dear, why didn't you confide in me about such a serious matter? I thought you sought a divorce merely because you suspected he was too close to that woman. You knew about her pregnancy, didn't you?"

Victoria, finally grasping the severity of the situation, could only nod in silent agreement, her heart heavy with sorrow.

Mrs. Harrington continued, her voice tinged with regret, "So, it seems we, the elderly couple, were the last to know, adding to our dear one's distress. Don't worry, if you decide to divorce again, I support you."

Victoria was taken aback, pleasantly surprised by this unexpected show of support.

"Mom," Arabella interjected urgently, addressing Mrs. Harrington.

Mrs. Harrington dismissed her, her grip on Victoria's hand tightening as she declared, "Our darling has never faced such disgrace. I will make the decision for them today; this marriage must end."

Arabella protested, "But we haven't gotten to the bottom of this yet. Don't rush to judgment. What if Alex and Isabella Montgomery are just a misunderstanding?"

Mrs. Harrington scoffed at the suggestion, "A misunderstanding? They have a child together, how could that be a misunderstanding?" Her gaze fell on the ring adorning Victoria's finger, her heart aching as she admonished Arabella, "After all this time being married, he hasn't even bought our darling a proper ring. What misunderstanding? It's clear his heart was never with her. And you and your husband better stop defending that boy."

Victoria attempted to defuse the situation, "Grandma, it’s not that serious."

Mrs. Harrington countered, "You don't have to comfort me; I'm your grandmother now, and it's my duty to ensure justice is served on your behalf."

Victoria remained silent, her expression inscrutable.

At dinner, Alexander Harrington's movements were sluggish. Victoria observed his struggle with the chopsticks, noticed the strain in his shoulder, and felt a pang of sympathy. She whispered softly, "What's wrong?"

He dismissed her concern with a flat, "It's nothing," but his pallor betrayed him.

Mr. Harrington Sr., seated at the head of the table, taunted, "Hmph, got a couple of hits and now you can't even hold your fork properly?" His voice was filled with a confident bravado.

Alexander didn’t flinch, retorting, "Why don't you go ahead and hit me a few more times, then?"

Mr. Harrington Sr. brandished a nearby vodka bottle, threatening, "You think I wouldn't dare?"

Victoria, alarmed, quickly extended her hand to shield Alexander, pleading, "Stop, Grandfather, we mustn't resort to violence."

Alexander's gaze turned icy as he looked at her. She was terrified, yet she protected him with her body. Did she believe she could block anything? Or even halt the turmoil in his heart?

Mr. Harrington Sr. fell silent.

Mrs. Harrington's stern facade softened momentarily, but she quickly regained her composure, advising Victoria, "Vicky, don't intervene; let your grandpa vent some more on him for you."

Victoria hurriedly reassured them, "No need, seriously, no need. I'm not upset. " Her gaze remained fixed on the bottle in Mr. Harrington Sr.'s hand. "Grandpa, please put the bottle down. Nanny?"

The nanny, standing at attention behind them, responded promptly, "Yes."

"Please take the bottle away from Grandpa."

"Alright," the nanny agreed, swiftly complying.

Mr. Harrington Sr. grumbled, "Hmph, for Vicky's sake, I'll let it slide tonight, but you just wait."

Victoria exhaled in relief only when the bottle was safely out of Mr. Harrington Sr.'s reach. She firmly believed that no matter how severe an issue, violence was not the solution. She could see the pain etched on Alexander's face. In all their time together, she had never seen him so frustrated and constrained.
