Chapter 143 No, She Relished It

An overwhelming urge to close the distance between them seized Alexander. Yet, she had made it clear to the elders that she bore no love for him. He was not oblivious to his own feelings for her.

If she could beguile complete strangers, how could he, who knew her so well, remain unaffected? However, he couldn't simply claim her bed as his own.

The silence in the room was so profound that he could hear his own breath. Long moments passed with him just sitting there, lost in his thoughts. It was a situation he had never envisioned himself in - being indecisive at such a crucial juncture in his life.

The moment she turned, his emotions stirred. Alexander glanced her way again but ultimately remained inert.

Victoria Kensington, however, was already clutching the comforter, restless on this sultry summer night. She sat up, her gaze falling on him. Alexander returned her look.

They were far enough apart that they could barely see each other. The only light came from the dim, cozy floor lamp, bathing the room in a warm, yellow glow that silently infused the space with an air of tranquil and intimate serenity.

"I'll... I'll go sleep in the guest room," she finally broke the silence. It was never right to ask someone else to move, she reasoned. So, she had to do it herself. After all, it was his place.

Alexander simply watched her, silent. Surprisingly, he didn't know what to say. Lowering her head, she scurried out of the bedroom.

When Alexander heard the door click shut, he finally let out a resigned chuckle. He went downstairs to Benjamin Beaumont's place and happened upon Edward Sinclair and Sebastian Montague as well.

The three men were slightly taken aback to see him in his pajamas and slippers, looking ready for bed, yet appearing before a bunch of bachelors.

"Let's have a drink," Alexander declared. Sebastian Montague tensely pocketed his hands, his anxiety evident. But Alexander didn't look at him. He just stood outside the bar and spoke flatly, "Why didn't you say hello when you got back?"

"You seemed busy lately," Sebastian finally responded. Alexander looked up, a sudden smile breaking across his face.

Benjamin Beaumont had already poured a glass for him, and as Alexander took it, he looked at Sebastian and said, "No matter how busy I am, there's always time for you." Sebastian Montague remained silent.

Edward Sinclair and Benjamin Beaumont couldn't resist stealing glances at Sebastian.

Something felt off about Sebastian Montague's return this time; he seemed less talkative than usual, especially tight-lipped when it came to Alexander Harrington. He used to be the one who would talk about Alexander Harrington with the most enthusiasm.

Soon, others filtered into the house. Four men stood before the bar, all lapsing into silence.

"Wow, look at these handsome fellas. Just couldn't sleep and thought I'd come for a chat," Isabella Montgomery proclaimed, as if she were the beloved gem of the group.

"You've come over here to chat?" Benjamin Beaumont questioned, perplexed.

"Alright, alright, I came because I had a feeling Alex would be here, okay?" Isabella retorted.

It was well past eleven at night. But no one said it wasn't okay.

Isabella Montgomery sauntered over and sat down next to Alexander Harrington, spotting some beautiful grapes on the table. She popped one into her mouth and remarked, "Mmm, so sweet—yuck."

Benjamin Beaumont was at a loss for words. Their family business revolved around red wine, and his mother had personally cultivated a batch of particularly sweet grapes for their own enjoyment. He did not anticipate such a critique.

Alexander Harrington glanced down at her, her reaction triggering a flood of images in his mind of that woman savoring grapes with delicate relish.

"Does she also find them unpleasant?" he asked.

"No, she relishes them," replied Alexander thoughtfully, his words spilling out unintentionally.

Benjamin Beaumont felt a bit of his pride return, having previously thought that all young women enjoyed such juicy, plump grapes.

Isabella Montgomery, somewhat confused, asked, "What do you mean 'she'? You've been giving them to someone else?"
