Chapter 328 Begging Him to Stay
In silence, Alexander observed her, his rationality teetering on the brink of collapse. Her level of intoxication mattered little to him, so long as she remained within his sight.Victoria, meanwhile, was plagued by an irritating sensation at her neck. She cast a frown at the offending pendant and reached out to remove it. Despite her best efforts, the tangled chain refused to yield.
On the verge of tears, she caught sight of him and immediately dropped into a squat. "Could you help me with this?" she pleaded. "It's unbearably uncomfortable."She turned her back to him, her hair still gathered in an updo, revealing the nape of her neck. It was at this moment that Alexander regained his composure and rose to his feet. He resolved not to exploit her in her vulnerable state, opting instead to wait until she was sober. Yet her scent was intoxicating. Suddenly, she drew her knees into her chest and began to weep, seemingly without cause. At least, that was Alexander's interpretation. In a mumble, she reassured him, "You needn't worry. He won't come to harm you."Clutching the billion-dollar necklace in his hand, Alexander met her gaze."My husband," she began, "he left soon after our wedding.""He found another woman, a childhood friend, his moonlight."Her words trailed off into a sudden laugh. She wiped away her tears and retrieved her skirt from the floor.Alexander, still seated, furrowed his brow and asked, "Do you have a picture?"
"A picture?"
"Of him.""Oh, yes, I have a candid shot," she giggled.Victoria crouched down to rummage for her phone, but Alexander beat her to it, retrieving it from the bedside table. Victoria looked up in surprise. "How did you know where my phone was?"Alexander remained silent. She settled next to him, her demeanor suddenly docile. She found the photo. "Take a look, he's truly handsome. I'm not deceiving you."Alexander glanced at her phone and noticed that her Facebook username was "Into the Night," and her profile picture was a photo of him, likely taken during their first encounter.
A pang of melancholy struck him, and he found himself looking at her once more.
Victoria returned his gaze and remarked, "You look like my husband."
Alexander wanted to laugh, but his smile was faint. "Odd, looks like there's more to just looking alike,"
Victoria showed him her phone, looked at it, then at him, and suddenly froze, "Are you Alexander?"
Alexander remained silent, retreating to the edge of the bed, his gaze fixed on her.
"Why did you come back?"
Victoria sat still, eyeing him warily. She seemed fearful that her voice might drive him away in anger. She wondered if she had done something wrong, something that had caused him to leave so abruptly. Or perhaps she should have reassured him before their marriage that she wouldn't hold him back. Had she frightened him away?
"Come here," Alexander's voice softened, his eyes glistening.
Victoria complied, casting him another glance before moving to sit across from him, her knees drawn to her chest.
Alexander said nothing, simply pulling her onto his lap.
Victoria sat there, a touch uncomfortable, and whispered, "Am I too heavy?"
"No," he replied.
"Alright." Victoria lowered her gaze, her cheeks flushing a deep red.
Alexander felt as though he was being tormented by her that night. Why was she suddenly acting shy? After all the scolding and kicking, was she now playing the victim?
He placed the necklace on the nightstand, his hand coming to rest on her leg, gently caressing it. Then he asked her earnestly, "Do you love me?"
Victoria looked up at him, her eyes glistening. She nodded, then quickly shook her head. "No, I don't love you, and I won't hold you back. You're free, entirely free."
"If I do that, will it make you stay?" she asked him, her gaze steady and searching.
