Chapter 252 I Will Come Back, I Promise

Victoria was startled by what she heard but kept her head down and didn't dare to approach him.

"If you can't do it, then don't go," he said in a subdued tone.

Upon hearing this, Victoria's heart clenched. How could she not go? It had been a long time since she last visited home. She knew she had to step forward, but the thought of lifting his clothes made her feel... She blushed fiercely, her cheeks burning with embarrassment. Left with no other choice, she bent down.

Alexander merely watched her, his gaze piercing, as if trying to decipher the secrets hidden behind her downcast face.

With a trembling hand, Victoria hooked her index finger onto Alexander's coat, her other hand reaching in to retrieve the document. Suddenly, her hand was captured in a firm grip. Startled, her face drained of color.

Before she could react, Alexander pulled back, causing her to stumble into him. His grip on her wrist tightened, immobilizing her.

"Will you come back?" he suddenly asked, his tone grave.

When Victoria dared to look up, she saw a deep melancholy in his eyes that she couldn't ignore. Yet, she couldn't hold his gaze. She fought to control her racing heart before finally managing to utter, "Of course."

"Are you lying to me?" he asked.

"No, I'm not lying," Victoria replied, adding emphasis to her words.

"Look at me and say it," he demanded.

Victoria's heart pounded in her chest at his command. But when she finally met his gaze, she felt a sense of disorientation.

She knew she wouldn't return. Whether it was love or lust, he was an unwelcome presence in her heart, and she had no intention of coming back.

She didn't want to deal with ambiguous feelings. She had always believed love to be simple and pure—you either loved someone or you didn't. Even the most mundane marriages had boundaries and mutual respect, but they had neither. So, of course, she wouldn't return. But...

"Victoria, answer me honestly. Will you come back?" Alexander asked again, his gaze fixed on her.

"Yes, I will," Victoria responded hastily, her voice barely above a whisper as she lowered her gaze. Alexander held her face, forcing her to meet his eyes. "How can I believe you?" he questioned.

"What?" Victoria was taken aback, lost in her thoughts. Alexander was asking her for a reason to trust her. She was at a loss for words. Trust had always been a scarce commodity between them.

Suddenly, Alexander said, "Unbutton my shirt."

Victoria looked at him, puzzled. Even though her hand was resting on his chest, she couldn't bring herself to touch him. "Victoria, do you want me to let you go on this business trip?" he asked.

Whether it was a business trip or an escape, it was hard to say. Victoria had a sinking feeling. Could he have guessed her intentions? But she hadn't given him any indication that she planned to leave without returning.

"I will come back, I promise," Victoria said.

"Your promise means nothing to me," he replied.

Victoria was taken aback. She hadn't expected him to distrust her to such an extent.

"Unless there's someone you can't let go of," Alexander said.

"Yes, there is," Victoria immediately responded.

"Who?" Alexander asked, his attention focused solely on her.

"Grandparents, Dad, Mom, aunts, and those who were kind to me in City A," Victoria listed, inadvertently meeting his displeased gaze.

Alexander had reached his limit. "Unbutton those two buttons," he commanded.

"I won't sleep with you," Victoria declared with confidence.

"Did I say I wanted to sleep with you? Unbutton it," he retorted, his demand unwavering.

Victoria sensed that he wasn't trying to trick her, so she cautiously unbuttoned his shirt.
