Chapter 275 Victoria's Decision
Victoria's brow furrowed in confusion. "Why are you here?" she asked, her voice laced with a hint of perplexity.
"May I come in and talk?" Alexander inquired, his tone gentle yet insistent.
In her hand, Victoria still clutched the golf club. His words made her realize the impropriety of her stance. She placed the club on the shoe cabinet, contemplating the idea of pushing it away.
After a moment's hesitation, she halted her actions and retreated to the doorway. Victoria positioned herself on the other side of the wider crack in the door.
"If you have something to say, say it from there. I can hear you just fine," she declared, her voice echoing slightly in the quiet hallway.
Alexander's gaze fell on the resolute girl who refused him entry. Her wary expression suggested she perceived him as a potential threat. "What are you doing?" he asked, his voice filled with curiosity.
"I'm guarding against thieves," she retorted, her tone sharp.
"Am I a thief?" Alexander challenged. In truth, he was one, but that wasn't the point.
Victoria quickly averted her gaze, her voice barely above a whisper as she urged him to leave if he had no business there. Alexander, however, insisted that he did.
Her patience was wearing thin. "Why are you here?" she demanded.
Alexander's question about her recent shower seemed to catch her off guard. She stared at him, her eyes wide with confusion. He noticed the unshed tears in her eyes and felt a pang of sympathy. After a moment's pause, he asked if it was just a common problem.
Victoria, however, was having none of it. "I'm going to sleep. Please don't open the door again," she said, closing the door firmly.
Yet, the door swung open once more. Alexander stood there, his gaze locked on her tear-streaked face. He could no longer contain himself. "I want to come in," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Victoria was taken aback by his request. He quickly clarified, "I mean into the house."
Victoria was puzzled. She didn't understand why he felt the need to explain. She knew exactly what he meant.
Alexander, however, thought she might misconstrue his intentions. "I thought you would interpret it as me wanting to have sex with you," he explained.
Victoria was rendered speechless. Her expression slowly morphed into one of disbelief. Snapping out of her daze, she turned around and closed the door once more.
"We'll talk about it tomorrow. I'm going to sleep," she said, her voice firm.
But Alexander was relentless. He opened the door again. "When we last spoke on the phone, you had lost your voice. Were you sick?" he asked, finally voicing the question that had been nagging him. He didn't know why, but he needed to know if Victoria had been sick that day.
Victoria remembered her high fever, a result of her fear and menstrual period. She also remembered the bruise on her neck that hadn't yet faded. Luckily, the dim lighting and the door between them concealed it.
"Yes, I had a slight fever," she admitted.
"But you didn't have a fever when you were in Ankenra," Alexander pointed out.
Victoria had had enough. "I have already answered your question. Please don't open the door again, or I will call the police," she warned, before closing the door and pushing the shoe cabinet against it.
Alexander stood outside the door for a moment, unmoving. Victoria, too, lingered for a while before retreating to her room. She sat on the edge of her bed, her gaze drawn to the door. She wondered why he had asked such a question. Was he concerned about her? No, she decided, he was merely curious about her voice during that phone call. And even if he did care, it didn't matter anymore.
Exhausted, Victoria lay down on the bed, her eyes still fixed on the door. She curled up into a ball, her mind drifting back to the day she had bought contraceptive pills, which had delayed her menstrual cycle. She didn't know what to do next, but one thing was clear: she would never consider having any relationship with Alexander again. Even if he hadn't had an affair with Isabella, she would still be unworthy of him.
Victoria resolved never to invite him into her home again, never to be alone with him. From now on, there would be an insurmountable barrier between Alexander and Victoria.
