Chapter 115 Oscar, Pearl's Husband
The crowd fell silent in perfect harmony. They all turned to look at the source of the sound.
Several cars stopped behind the crowd, and a tall, striking figure walked over. The man was dressed in a black-gray suit, with a cold face and sharp, serious, deep eyes. He exuded a distant aura that made people dare not approach him, yet also commanded respect.
They made way for him.
Pearl turned around, somewhat surprised that he had come.
The tension eased, and Pearl dropped the hose in her hand.
After a few seconds of silence, someone suddenly exclaimed, "Who are you? Do you need to meddle in the Harris family's affairs?"
Oscar's sharp eyes fixed on the person.
The person felt suppressed, a chill running down their spine.
Oscar coldly stated, "I am Pearl's husband. Do you have a problem with that?"
"Husband?"
They were shocked, curious. "Isn't that a wealthy guy?"
Many luxury cars were parked at the entrance. They recognized the brands but rarely saw them in person. They also knew the visitor's identity was extraordinary. They had only heard about it before; now, they truly realized that Pearl had married into a wealthy family.
"No wonder there are so many cars parked. The grandeur of wealthy families when they go out!"
They curiously gazed at the vehicles outside.
Oscar approached Pearl.
Pearl asked, "Why are you here?"
She hadn't seen Oscar for several days, and she had come with her parents. Just like in previous years, during holidays or festivals, she was always with her parents, as Oscar wouldn't be around. She and Oscar kept their marriage hidden from the public, living separate lives.
Oscar had never visited her hometown.
She hadn't expected Oscar to come either.
Oscar said, "You came back to your hometown for a funeral. As a matter of courtesy, I had to come; any problem with that?"
Pearl pursed her lips, "No problem."
Seeing them gathered around, seemingly ready to bully her, Oscar sternly said, "You'd better disperse today! If you don't, then I'll have to handle it!"
Oscar had over ten people under him. They were all bodyguards. If Oscar really took action, no one from the Harris family could withstand it.
Seeing that Oscar was not to be trifled with and with so many subordinates, the members of the Harris family couldn't confront him directly.
There were occasional complaints, such as, "How barbaric and violent, do they really think they can represent the law?"
Oscar's eyes were sharp and his voice was deep. "If I was really barbaric, you won't be able to stand here and speak."
The person named fell silent immediately.
Harley stood aside, cleared his throat, and spoke, "Ms. Brown is innocent. You don't know the whole story. You believe what others say. Don't you trust the police? Since Ms. Brown is here, she is innocent. It's you who like to be swayed by public opinion."
Harley presented facts and evidence and argued for Pearl. The members of the Harris family found Harley's words reasonable.
However, Olivia and Isabelle remained silent. They were not pleased. They harbored hatred toward Pearl. They wished for Pearl to be vilified.
With Oscar's intervention, the members of the Harris family changed their views on Pearl, which naturally did not sit well with Olivia and Isabelle.
But there was nothing they could do.
Pearl settled with Kittie and Evans, who stayed in the house where her grandparents lived. The house had been unoccupied for a long time but was regularly cleaned.
Even though Evans and Kittie knew that Oscar and Pearl's marriage was no longer intact, they still wanted Pearl to thank Oscar.
Oscar sat in the living room.
Pearl poured a glass of water for Oscar. "Kittie and Evans asked me to thank you."
"No need to be polite."
Pearl sat next to Oscar and self-deprecatingly said, "I couldn't make them believe me even after talking for so long, but after a few words from you, they relented. Am I just too weak? Why won't they believe me yet believe you?"
Pearl couldn't understand. Clearly, she wanted to rely on her own abilities to solve things, but in the end, it was Oscar who resolved them.
Oscar drank the water and listened to Pearl's words, his expression unchanged. He was not surprised by such matters. "You need to understand the truth: human nature is ugly, especially the members of the Harris family. They will magnify your faults but won't see your virtues. Don't sympathize with others. The more people dislike you, the more difficult their lives are. They are not worth thinking about."
Oscar looked at Pearl again and smiled. "It's not just you, and it's the same for me. You are the focus now, but if you encounter members of the Brown family, they are even more terrifying."
Pearl pondered, "Is that so?"
Pearl had never met the members of the Brown family, so she didn't know what kind of terror Oscar was referring to.
According to her hometown's customs, funerals lasted three days. Relatives, neighbors, and friends would come for meals.
At lunchtime, Pearl was concerned that Oscar might not know of the customs, so she asked, "Lunch is indoors. Do you want to meet my relatives?"
"Why not?" Oscar looked up.
Pearl said, "I'm afraid you're not used to it since you've never been here, but it's okay if you don't go."
"I'll go."
Oscar wanted to go, and Pearl didn't object.
To save the trouble of going back and forth, Pearl didn't call her parents. She would bring them some food later. She went out with Oscar.
When she was a child, she stayed at her grandparents' house for a while and met Hotch Reid next door.
"This must be Pearl."
Leaning on a cane with white hair, Hotch's eyes were a bit blurry, but he recognized Pearl at a glance.
Pearl looked at him and took a while to recognize him. "Grandpa Reid."
It had been twenty years since Pearl had been at her grandparents' house. Back then, Hotch was still healthy, not leaning on a cane like now. He used to take her to his house to play. Each time, Pearl would receive a lot of snacks and fruits. As a child, she loved going to play at other people's homes with her grandparents.
But times had changed. Everyone was busy with their own lives, and relationships had grown distant.
"It really is Pearl." Hotch approached a bit, carefully examining her. "You were so small back then. Now you've grown so beautiful. Time flies, I've aged, and Mr. Harris is no longer with us."
"Take care, Grandpa Reid!"
Pearl was sweet-tongued, making Hotch happy, but what he really wanted to ask was, "Pearl, are you married? If not, I can introduce you to a few suitors."
Oscar, standing nearby, couldn't help but cough twice.
Hotch's gaze turned to him. Peering through his reading glasses, he looked at Oscar for a while before finally recognizing him, "Pearl, who is this?"
"I am Pearl's husband, Oscar," Oscar said.
