Chapter 528 I Also Wish You Happiness
Louis kept his mouth shut, his lips a tight, thin line.
His usually handsome face was clouded with a dark mood.
"You need me..."
"No, I don't," Louis cut RavenWing off before he could finish.
Louis said firmly, "Feelings just slow you down. Plus, with our status, we can't live a normal life."
They had duties to the Eldorians.
The biggest one was Francesca.
After Francesca died, RavenWing was a mess for a long time.
Later, other women came into RavenWing's life.
Now, he was the leader of the Eldorians, which meant he had to follow the same path as RavenWing.
He couldn't juggle running the country and having a family.
So, he figured, why bother getting married and having kids?
That way, there wouldn't be another situation like RaveWing's.
RavenWing saw everything in the determined, cold look in Louis's eyes.
RavenWing suddenly felt like he couldn't breathe, like something was squeezing his neck.
A few seconds later, he finally made up his mind.
"If the pressure's too much, why don't you leave with Carol?"
When talking to Louis, RavenWing always called Pearl "Carol."
RavenWing felt he not only owed Pearl, but also owed Louis.
From childhood to now, he hadn't been there for Louis like he should have.
Even for his own mistakes, he made Louis pay for them too.
No wonder Louis didn't go after women or get married; it was all because of him!
Right now, RavenWing felt like the bad guy.
Louis looked up at RavenWing, a bit stunned.
"So, it's all because of Carol," Louis joked.
He didn't mean to compare himself to Pearl, but he couldn't help feeling a bit uneasy.
RavenWing didn't answer. Right now, his heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible hand, causing him a lot of pain and making it hard to breathe.
Carol was his lifelong regret. Ever since she vanished, he couldn't stop thinking about finding her.
He threw himself into his work, not just for his career and achievements.
He was desperately trying to bring Francesca back to life.
But he had been too optimistic about everything.
RavenWing took a deep breath and said, "I'm sorry, I ignored your feelings before. Now, go do what you want. As long as someone can lead the Eldorians to a better future, it doesn't have to be you."
RavenWing had a relieved smile, but the mist in his eyes made Louis's heart ache.
RavenWing patted his shoulder. "I hope you live well. Jimena's a good girl."
Louis's throat tightened. He wanted to say more, but RavenWing had already left.
Soon after, Jimena was wheeled out.
Jimena lay on the gurney, her face pale, wearing an oxygen mask.
Louis didn't say a word and just trailed behind her. To him, sticking by Jimena's side was the right thing to do now.
Jimena had put her life on the line to save him this time; he couldn't just brush that off.
Meanwhile, Pearl got wind that Louis was in trouble and that Jimena had risked her life for him.
She wanted to check on Louis, but Oscar stopped her. "If Louis was hurt, these folks wouldn't be so chill, and there'd be some news."
That made sense, but she couldn't just ignore Jimena knowing Louis was okay.
So, Pearl went to see Jimena anyway.
To her surprise, Louis was already there.
Pearl knew how Jimena felt about Louis, so she quietly slipped away to avoid interrupting.
But RavenWing called out, "Pearl, hang on a sec."
Pearl turned to see RavenWing standing there.
"Father," Pearl greeted him, unsure why he had called her.
Even though she had accepted him, Pearl didn't go out of her way to seek him out.
RavenWing was quiet for a moment, then said, "I hope you can help Louis."
Pearl got the hint.
"Father, I can't help with Louis." Matters of a relationship weren't her business to meddle in.
RavenWing spilled everything Louis had told him.
He also shared his own thoughts with Pearl.
"You both are my kids. Francesca died early, and I neglected you both. Now, I want to make it up to you. I don't want him to be buried under responsibilities; I want him to be happy."
Worried Pearl might think he was playing favorites, he added, "I want you to be happy too."
Pearl stayed quiet.
She got what RavenWing was saying.
Louis wasn't with Jimena because of duty.
But if there were no duties, Louis and Jimena could be happy together.
RavenWing wanted her to talk to Louis.
Pearl pressed her lips together and said softly, "I'll do my best."
If Louis wasn't into it, she couldn't force them together.
RavenWing continued, "Try to talk to him; it doesn't have to be with Jimena."
But Louis stayed by Jimena's side the whole time.
And since Jimena hadn't woken up yet, it wasn't the right time to pull Louis aside.
She had to wait for a better moment.
Meanwhile, Oscar was already picking out wedding dresses.
He owed Pearl a wedding, and now it was time to make it happen.
But he wanted to surprise her.
However, his eyelids grew heavy.
By the time Pearl got back, Oscar was already asleep.
Pearl was about to cover him with a light blanket when, as she got closer, Oscar murmured in a hoarse voice, "Haley."
Pearl's hand froze.
She hadn't heard that name in ages.
And Haley was already dead.
Oscar suddenly calling out that name—did Haley mean that much to him?
Pearl's breathing got heavy, and for a moment, she didn't know how to feel.
Because she thought of her first night with Oscar.
Back then, Oscar was drunk and murmured Haley's name.
