Chapter 766 Rekindle Things
"I don't love her," Nathaniel snapped. "I'm not crazy. How could I fall for a gold digger?"
What a joke!
"If you don't love her, then why won't you give Amy a chance? I picked her out for you. She's perfect. If you don't like her, you need to give me a reason," Jade insisted.
Nathaniel's frustration was boiling over.
He didn't even want to talk to Amy, let alone come up with reasons to dislike her.
"Look, I don't want to get married right now, so just drop it," he said.
"Fine, you two just met tonight. I shouldn't be pushing you so hard. I'll give you some time, but you need to cut ties with Saskia and all those other women," Jade relented.
As a mom, she wasn't entirely unreasonable.
Once Nathaniel and Amy had a kid, if Nathaniel still didn't care for her and took on a few mistresses, Jade wouldn't say a word.
But Saskia was off-limits.
That sick child was like a ticking time bomb. If it ever got out, the Waverly family would definitely cause trouble. Instead of becoming in-laws, they'd become enemies.
"Mom, if you're that bored, why not go out dancing instead of focusing all your energy on me?" Nathaniel said, exasperated. "I've got to get to work at the firm. I'm outta here."
"It's so late. What work could you possibly have?" Jade wasn't as easy to fool as Azalea. She could see through his excuses.
"You're not going to see Saskia again, are you? After all this time, are you two still trying to rekindle things?" Jade asked.
"Mom, I respect you, and I hope you respect me too. I'm an adult now. I have my own privacy. Stop investigating me," Nathaniel said, slamming the door as he left.
No one liked being scrutinized. It felt terrible, even when the one doing it was your own mother.
Behind him, Jade's expression soured. Yet she thought that the paternity test results would be out tomorrow. Once Nathaniel saw the report, he should come to his senses.
Nathaniel drove home, where Azalea was already asleep.
Saskia had cried herself to sleep after her shower. Half-asleep, she heard the door open.
Nathaniel's heavy footsteps grew closer until they stopped by her bed.
"How can you sleep?" Nathaniel yanked her up.
He was being pressured into marriage and was extremely annoyed. How could Saskia sleep so soundly?
Not just tonight, but for the past four years, while he was in agony, Saskia had slept peacefully.
How could she sleep?
The more Nathaniel thought about it, the more upset he became. His grip tightened.
"You're hurting me. Be gentle." Saskia woke up, turning on the bedside lamp to see Nathaniel's angry face. She couldn't understand what she had done to upset him.
She had complied with all his unreasonable demands tonight, enduring humiliation.
Why was he still not happy?
"When you're in other guys' beds, do you ask them to be gentle too? Or is it that anyone else can do whatever they want, but with me, you start demanding special treatment?" Nathaniel said as he ripped off her lace nightgown. The fabric tore to shreds.
Saskia didn't resist. She knew it was pointless and would only make Nathaniel angrier.
The angrier he got, the worse her life became.
But her puppet-like lack of reaction only infuriated Nathaniel more. "Are you dead?" he exclaimed.
"What do you want me to do? Just tell me," Saskia said, feeling wronged.
Nathaniel said, "Do what you did in those photos, right in front of me. Now."
The humiliating images raced through Saskia's mind again. For a moment, she wished her heart would just stop.
Then she wouldn't have to endure any of this.
Nathaniel pressed, "I have all those photos saved. You don't want Benjamin to see them..."
"I'll do it. I'll do everything," Saskia said and quickly got up.
For Benjamin, she would do anything.
That night, she was tormented from dusk till dawn.
Satisfied, Nathaniel didn't sleep. He took a shower and went straight to the law firm, sleeping for a few hours in his office.
Saskia lay in bed, staring at the ceiling in the dim light.
When would this life end?
She fell asleep at dawn and woke up late. Today, Azalea didn't knock on her door but waited downstairs for breakfast.
Saskia got up, covered the hickeys on her neck with foundation, and put on a high-collared shirt before heading downstairs.
"Saskia, you've been getting up late these days. Sometimes I wonder if you're sneaking out at night to steal cows," Azalea joked, handing Saskia breakfast. "Just kidding. Actually, I hope you sleep in a bit more."
Hearing this, Saskia said nothing.
She sighed inwardly. Azalea shouldn't get her hopes up. Saskia wasn't staying up late scrolling on her phone; Nathaniel was simply too relentless.
Azalea continued, "You used to stay up late, only getting four or five hours of sleep a night. You're young now, so it doesn't show, but when you get older, it'll catch up with you. You need to get more rest and take care of yourself."
She then handed Saskia some supplements. "George bought these for me. You should have some too. They're good for women."
"If he bought them for you, I won't take them," Saskia pushed them back.
She didn't want to take Azalea's things, especially not anything Nathaniel bought.
Azalea pushed them back and said, "No need to be so formal. Drink up. After breakfast, I'll go to the hospital with you."
"Forget it. You're pregnant. The hospital smells too strong. I don't want it to bother you," Saskia said, not wanting to trouble her.
Azalea pouted, genuinely upset. "Do you even consider me your family? I've been to the hospital before. I feel like you're not close to me anymore."
Saskia felt it too.
But with Nathaniel between them, she couldn't treat Azalea the same way as before.
Under Azalea's insistence, they went to the hospital together.
At the hospital room door, Saskia ran into Marlon again.
He stood there, holding two cartons of milk.
Seeing Saskia, Marlon hurried over and said, "I came to see your child. This is a small token of my care."
