Chapter 312 Potato Chips

Jeffery's face was a mix of emotions. If she knew what he'd done, she wouldn't be saying that.

He didn't even dare to touch her hand, let alone tell her the truth.

Jeffery didn't resist anymore and let her hold his hand.

They sat quietly for a while. The red color on Pearl's bracelet grew more intense. Pearl noticed and asked, "Has this bracelet's color changed?"

Jeffery looked at her calmly. "Has it?"

Pearl held the bracelet up to the light, confirming the red was indeed brighter. "I thought it would darken over time, but this red seems to have increased. Isn't this your bracelet? Haven't you noticed?"

Jeffery instinctively clenched his wrist and smiled. "I don't know either."

Pearl looked at him. "You've worn it for so long and never noticed? It's weird there's blood inside the bracelet."

She sniffed it. "It smells fragrant and bloody. Really strange."

"Didn't you notice?" she asked again.

Jeffery was surprised by Pearl's sharp perception. Even if she didn't know everything, she could sense something was off.

No matter how he explained, it wouldn't make sense.

"Forget it, I don't want to think about it. Since you gave me the bracelet, I feel much better." Pearl had recovered by now. She initially felt exhausted but now felt more energetic. Maybe the bracelet really had an effect.

Pearl didn't dwell on it, which relieved Jeffery. He said, "You've slept for so long, you must be hungry. I'll make you something."

"You can cook?" Pearl asked.

She'd been to his place and his workplace, but there were no signs of cooking.

"You'll see."

Jeffery walked out first, and Pearl followed, curious to see what he could make.

In the living room, there was a basket of dark red strawberries.

She didn't understand why Jeffery was so insistent on giving her strawberries.

She picked one up and ate it, which was sweet, so she asked, "Haven't you grown any other varieties?"

Jeffery said softly, "This variety is the best."

"Eat something sweet, and it'll chase away the bitterness."

Pearl was surprised. Jeffery was so thoughtful, even knowing about the bitterness in her mouth.

Pearl sat, eating strawberries. As Jeffery said, the sweetness did make the bitterness go away.

It was strange. She hadn't taken any medicine recently, so why the bitter taste?

Could it be a cold? Maybe her sense of taste had changed?

While Pearl pondered, she heard sounds from the kitchen.

The door was open, and she saw Jeffery's back. His posture while cooking was like he was performing a surgery.

Watching him, Pearl was reminded of Oscar cooking for her.

She was momentarily lost in thought, wondering why she suddenly thought of him.

It was all in the past.

Oscar would never be in this villa again.

Pearl walked to the kitchen, and Jeffery said, "Are you hungry? It'll be ready soon."

Pearl said, "You seem to be good at everything."

"This is my first time cooking."

Pearl raised an eyebrow. "Not bad. I'll give it a try. Maybe you're a natural."

Jeffery was handling a chicken and calmly explained, "This is the heart, this is the liver, these are the internal organs, which aren't very tasty. This is the body, which is better."

She watched Jeffery hollow out the chicken's insides and listened to his explanation. It felt like an anatomy lesson.

Jeffery was dissecting the chicken while cooking, which made her feel nauseous, so she left the kitchen.

Half an hour later, Jeffery came out of the kitchen.

There was no strange smell, just the aroma of cooking oil, indicating he hadn't wrecked the kitchen.

But when Jeffery brought the dishes to the table, Pearl was shocked.

She stared at him in astonishment.

Seeing that Pearl wasn't eating, Jeffery asked, "What's wrong? Doesn't it look good? I made sure to keep it intact."

"It's not that," Pearl said. "You didn't have to keep it intact. Is there anything else?"

"Yes, I made some potato chips." Jeffery had found some leftover potatoes, mashed them, and put them in the oven.

Pearl felt relieved. "I'll have the potato chips. I haven't had them in a long time and I'm craving them."

"Okay."

Jeffery immediately took the potato chips out of the oven.

At that moment, Jeffery was frustrated. He placed the potato chips on the table, and Pearl saw they were burnt black and obviously inedible.

"Sorry, I followed the recipe's time exactly, but it didn't work." Jeffery had strictly followed the instructions, but he still burned them.

This showed that the recipe's timing was wrong.

Pearl was quite surprised.

"This is not bad," Jeffery said, cutting the chicken and putting a small piece in his mouth. "It's not overcooked."

His expression was so normal, not realizing that Pearl might be uncomfortable.

Pearl looked at him and couldn't help but laugh. "Jeffery, you really can't cook."

Jeffery was puzzled. "What's wrong? Didn't I do a good job? I locked in the chicken's juices, it shouldn't taste bad!"

He was confident, but Pearl said, "Look at the kitchen, it looks like an operating table. You've dissected the organs and innards so meticulously, how can anyone have an appetite? You shouldn't cook anymore. I believe in your skills, but I trust your surgical expertise more. Your dissection is impressive."

Suddenly, Jeffery realized and put down the knife and fork. "Sorry, I didn't realize."

It was his occupational habit.

"It's okay," Pearl said. "We can order takeout."

Seeing her smile, Jeffery couldn't help but smile too. "I'm glad you didn't blame me for not cooking well and that I can still see your smile. It makes me happy."

"Then I'll smile more often. You'll see it frequently, and I hope you're happy every day." Pearl continued to smile because she knew Jeffery had a tough time before. She wanted to give him encouragement, even if it was just a smile.

Even if her own life had its disappointments, she wanted to make him a little happier.

Jeffery's gaze was gentle and happy.

Spending time with Pearl was always so joyful, even if it was just making a meal.

However, a drop of blood fell on the plate.

Jeffery's expression changed slightly, and he was about to wipe it off, but Pearl saw it too. "Wait!"

She quickly reached out to grab his hand.
