Chapter 817 The New Secretary

The car screeched to a stop just in the nick of time.

As the driver tried to wrap his head around what just happened, a runaway truck came barreling through the intersection.

The truck was going way too fast to stop, flipped over, slid a good distance, and crashed into several cars.

The screeching sound pierced the air, and the driver felt a wave of fear wash over him.

If it hadn't been for Saskia's timely warning, they might've been hit by the truck.

Nathaniel frowned, looking at the terrified Saskia. He wanted to ask her something but knew it wasn't the right time. "Turn around and take another route back," he said.

It took the driver a moment to shake off the shock before he restarted the car.

Shortly after they left, the road was swarmed with police cars.

All the vehicles were forced to turn around.

The car cruised along the smooth road, and this time, the driver was fully alert, anxious to avoid any more trouble.

Luckily, there were no more surprises this time.

Back home safely, Saskia was just relieved that Benjamin was asleep and hadn't witnessed the terrifying scene. Otherwise, she would've been worried about how it would affect his young mind.

Even now, her heart was still pounding.

She put Benjamin to bed, closed the door, and came out to sit down and drink some water. "That accident was meant for us," she said.

Nathaniel narrowed his eyes.

Saskia took out her phone and showed him the message she had received just in time.

"I glanced at the text earlier. It said there would be an out-of-control vehicle."

"Was this from Azalea?"

They both spoke almost simultaneously.

After a moment, Saskia broke the silence. "Yeah, it's her number. I tried reaching out to her several times before, but I had no luck. Yet this time, she actually showed up." A pang of pain struck her chest as she spoke.

She didn't know how Azalea was doing.

She desperately wanted to know Azalea's current situation.

Noticing the light fade from Saskia's eyes, Nathaniel understood she was lost in thoughts of Azalea once more. He reached out and held her hand. "Don't dwell on it. If she can send you a warning, she must be safe."

Hearing this, Saskia felt somewhat comforted and nodded.

But then she started worrying about the person behind the scenes.

This person had targeted them multiple times. What did they want?

Nathaniel was worried about the same thing. More than himself, he was concerned that Saskia was the target. He said, "It's not safe for you to live here alone. Why don't you move in with me? I can look after you and Benjamin."

Saskia said, "But that..."

"Benjamin's safety is important." Nathaniel's tone was firm, leaving no room for other possibilities.

Saskia hesitated, but her hesitation stemmed from her own feelings. Compared to Benjamin, she would undoubtedly choose him.

But she couldn't bring herself to agree in front of Nathaniel. She replied, "I need to think about it. Even if I decide to go, I need time to pack."

Nathaniel's eyebrows relaxed, and he agreed readily.

Saskia felt a bit like she had been tricked.

The next day, Saskia got up early to get Benjamin ready for preschool.

It was Benjamin's first day in a new environment.

Even though Saskia had prepared thoroughly, she was still a bit worried. While dressing Benjamin, she couldn't help but say, "If you feel unwell, tell Ms. Everly right away, okay?"

Nora Everly was Benjamin's teacher.

Saskia hadn't met Nora in person but had video chatted with her and had a good impression. She had also informed Nora about Benjamin's situation.Nora promised to take good care of Benjamin.

"Ms. Everly?" Benjamin tilted his head, curiosity sparkling in his eyes.

Saskia smiled as she helped him into his coat, making him look like a chubby little peanut. "Yep, she's your teacher. Make sure to get along with your classmates, okay?"

After breakfast, she took Benjamin to preschool. It was just a short ten-minute drive.

From a distance, she saw a female teacher with a scarf and long hair greeting parents at the preschool entrance.

Recognizing Nora, Saskia approached to say hello.

Nora crouched down to look at Benjamin. "This must be Benjamin. What a handsome little guy."

Benjamin, shy as he was, blushed and hid behind Saskia, peeking out to observe his new teacher.

Nora found him adorable.

Saskia felt a bit embarrassed. "He's a bit shy," she said.

Nora replied, "It's normal for kids to be shy. Come on in. Ms. Fuller, would you like to take a look around the preschool?"

Saskia responded, "No, I have to get to work. I'll come by after work."

After handing Benjamin over to Nora and giving a few instructions, Saskia left.

On the way, she took a deep breath.

Today was not only Benjamin's first day at preschool but also her first day at work.

Saskia arrived at the Egan Group building, where many employees were already present.

On her first day, she didn't need to go straight to her workstation. Someone would show her around the company and explain her role.

Nathaniel had arranged for his assistant, who was on leave, to do this.

During this time, Robbie was seriously ill, and Nathaniel was helping out with this case.

Nathaniel hadn't forgotten the rules—lawyers couldn't engage in business.

"This is the conference room. There will be an important meeting here at ten. As a secretary, your job is to take notes on the key points." Nathaniel's assistant, Marcus, was explaining Saskia's duties.

A female employee walked by. "Is this the new secretary for Mr. Egan?" she asked.

She held a coffee cup and looked at Saskia with curiosity.

The news that Nathaniel had hired a new secretary had spread quickly within the company. Nathaniel had even called Marcus back from his leave to help the new secretary get acquainted with the company.

Even during the busiest times, Nathaniel hadn't done that.

Calling Marcus back had pulled him out of his warm family environment, which seemed quite harsh.

"Hello." Saskia greeted with a smile.

The female employee was momentarily taken aback and then felt a bit embarrassed. She asked, "Would you like some coffee? I have an extra breakfast."

Saskia was a bit flustered by her colleague's kindness but accepted it.

It was clearly an attempt to make friends.

There was no need to refuse and hurt her feelings.

Unexpectedly, receiving such kindness on her first day eased Saskia's nerves considerably.

She quickly got familiar with the company under Marcus's guidance.

The ten o'clock meeting started on time.

Marcus had to attend to other tasks. Before leaving, he hesitated, unsure how to arrange things for Saskia. He remarked, "It's your first day. You don't need to rush into work. Do you want to stay here..."

Saskia interrupted him. "It would be boring to stay here. I'll come along."

Marcus looked at her with newfound respect.

He had been puzzled when he was urgently called back, unsure of Saskia's capabilities.

However, noticing her proactive attitude made him think she couldn't be all that bad.

In the conference room, Nathaniel caught sight of Saskia and held her gaze briefly before casually looking away.

Then, the planning team began their report.
