Chapter 671 Uneven Heart

Emily was saved.

Pearl looked like a ghost, pale as a sheet from losing so much blood, and her lips were totally drained of color.

She leaned on the table to steady herself, her body swaying a bit, and made her way to the ward.

"Ma'am, please sit down and rest for a bit. We'll get you a blood transfusion. If you keep moving around, you might pass out," the nurse quickly grabbed her arm.

Pearl knew she was in bad shape.

She didn't try to tough it out, sat down to rest for a while, drank some water, and only went to see Emily after she felt a bit better.

Emily was looking a lot better, and her fever had gone down a bit.

"In about three hours, her temperature should be back to normal. If it goes up again, come find me right away," the doctor said carefully.

Pearl took note of everything the doctor said.

After the doctor left, she sat next to Emily, touched her forehead, and whispered softly, "Emily, please wake up soon."

Meanwhile, over at Oscar's place.

On the way home, he called his assistant, "Check out Calliope's family background and get it to me as soon as possible."

There were only so many people in the house. Christopher couldn't have hurt Emily, so the only suspect left was Calliope.

As for Lila, she was just a kid, the same age as Christopher. No way she could do something so awful.

Neither Oscar nor Pearl suspected Lila at all.

Soon, the car pulled up to the house. Oscar got out and was immediately met by a worried Christopher, "Dad, how's Emily doing?"

"She's fine. Once her fever's completely gone, she can come home. You rest for a bit, I need to talk to Calliope." Oscar patted Christopher's shoulder.

Then he and Calliope went to the backyard.

"Mr. Brown, I'm so sorry. I didn't notice anything wrong with Emily right away," Calliope said nervously, wringing her apron with her hands.

She was scared Oscar had come back to blame her.

After all, Oscar's kid was a genuine heiress. If he really went after her, how could she handle it?

Seeing her like this, Oscar thought in another direction.

If she hadn't done something wrong, why would she look so guilty?

Oscar's eyes were sharp, and his voice was stern. "What did you feed Emily today?"

"Just milk. I warmed it up beforehand," Calliope answered honestly.

"Are you sure you didn't give her anything else? If I find out otherwise, you know the consequences," Oscar continued to warn her.

Calliope nodded. "Mr. Brown, rest assured, I would never do something so despicable. If you're not convinced, you can check as you wish. You can also ask my previous employers, they all know my character well."

In the nanny business, reputation was everything. Calliope knew this well, so she always took great care of every child she looked after, never daring to be negligent. The Brown family paid Calliope a high salary, more than double what she made working for others. She genuinely cared for Emily, always worried she might miss something in her daily care.

She didn't even sleep soundly at night, waking up every two hours to check on Emily.

She did everything right and still worried about her well-being, let alone giving her something harmful to eat.

"Alright, you can go now," Oscar said. Without evidence, he couldn't directly accuse her.

He wished he had installed surveillance cameras at home. Then it would be clear who had harmed Emily.

Just as Calliope left, Oscar's assistant called, "Mr. Brown, I've sent you the information I found."

According to the info, Calliope's family was simple.

She had one daughter who got married a few years ago. They ran a grocery store and had a kid, with no debts and no big transactions in their bank account.

Calliope's previous employers also spoke highly of her, saying she was very dedicated to the children, like a real grandmother.

Based on the info, Oscar thought she was a good nanny.

But how did Emily suddenly get poisoned?

Oscar was puzzled.

Until he got a call from Pearl. Her tone was much calmer than before. "Oscar, the toxins in Emily's body have been neutralized, and her temperature is gradually decreasing. She's fine now."

"That's good. I'll be right back," Oscar said. He initially planned to go to the hospital alone, but remembering Christopher's earlier concern, he changed his mind.

He decided to take Christopher with him.

"Lila, do you want to come with us to see Emily?" Christopher asked her before leaving.

Lila quickly shook her head.

She didn't dare to look him in the eye, instinctively avoiding him and turning her head away.

But no one noticed this detail.

"Then stay home and play. I'll go with Dad," Christopher said, leaving quickly.

After they left, Lila was alone at home.

She tried to distract herself by playing with toys, but no matter what toy she held, images of Emily and Christopher's anxious face kept popping into her mind.

To her, Christopher was the only brother, the best brother. But in Christopher's eyes, she could never compare to Emily.

And those bad people had repeatedly emphasized that if she didn't complete the task, she would never see her mother again.

What should she do?

Lila thought for a long time, until evening, when the Brown family returned, and she still hadn't figured it out.

"Mr. Brown, Mrs. Brown, how is Emily?" Calliope, who had been with Lila, quickly walked over when she heard the door open.

Now everyone in the house gathered around Emily, leaving Lila alone on the couch, feeling very bored.

She walked over to Christopher. "Christopher, you were all out today, and I was alone. Now that you're back, can you play with me?"

Before, Christopher would have agreed to her request.

But now, he only wanted to stay by Emily's side. So he refused Lila again, "You play by yourself for now. I need to stay with Emily. We'll see after she gets better."
