Chapter 576 Something Happened
The dishes Pearl whipped up were a hit, turning her into the school's superstar mom who wasn't afraid to splash some cash. She totally stole Alina's spotlight, and Alina was not happy about it.
That afternoon, since Christopher was hurt and feeling crappy, Pearl took off early and headed home after lunch.
The moment she walked in the door, she got an invite from Alina to join some group chat, saying it was for all the moms to talk about their kids' education.
Pearl wasn't having it. She thought a kindergarten parents' group was a waste of time.
After Christopher dozed off, Pearl went downstairs to call Oscar, but he still wasn't picking up.
Thinking about the sports meet, Pearl was fuming, feeling this pent-up anger she needed to let out.
Her phone buzzed with a call from Alina. Pearl didn't like this woman one bit and was about to hang up, but curiosity got the best of her, so she answered.
"Pearl, why didn't you join the group?"
"Oh, I just didn't feel like it. What's up? Anything else? I'm swamped right now." Pearl didn't want to hear her babble.
Despite Pearl's attempts to end the conversation, Alina persisted. When Pearl finally didn't hang up, Alina sighed, "So, a few of us moms are meeting at the mall downtown. It's not often we get a break from the kids, so we're treating ourselves to a fun day. Want to come along?"
"I'll pass. You guys have a great time," Pearl replied, ice-cold.
"Don't be like that. I know what you're thinking. You think there's no point in making friends in kindergarten, but think about it, Christopher's in kindergarten now, but he'll go to elementary and middle school. These kids might stick together." Alina just wanted her to come out and have a good time.
Pearl chuckled, "Alright, a day out, huh? Where are we meeting? I'll head over now."
"Awesome. At the entrance of the pedestrian street downtown, there's a coffee shop there. Let's meet there," Alina said.
Pearl was seriously regretting going to that sports meet. Not only did Christopher get hurt, but now she was stuck dealing with this annoying woman.
Arriving at the coffee shop, Pearl got out of the car and walked over. She looked around but didn't see any familiar faces, so she went inside.
The place was super chill, with some light music playing in the background.
As soon as Pearl sat down, a bearded guy came over with smile. "Hey, miss, are you Christopher's mom, Pearl?"
Pearl nodded.
The guy looked relieved and said, "Finally found you. They already left and asked me to wait here for you. Let's get in the car quick, or we'll be late."
Pearl was annoyed. Was Alina really this childish, trying to mess with her? Calling her over and not waiting for her, was she trying to make a fool of her?
"Who asked you to wait here for me?" Pearl wanted to confirm if it was Alina. If it was, maybe Alina wasn't that bad.
The guy pulled out his phone and showed it to her. "My wife said you finally joined their group, and if you came and didn't see them, you'd be upset, so she asked me to wait here for you."
Yep, her gut was right. Alina was totally childish.
Without thinking too much, Pearl got in the car with the guy. On the way, Oscar finally replied to her message, saying he hit a snag with a project and would probably have to work all night.
Since Oscar was swamped with work, Pearl didn't hold it against him. She got a maid to look after Christopher and told Oscar she was heading out with the moms from his class.
While she was texting Oscar, the car had already left the city limits.
Pearl was confused and asked, "Weren't we supposed to go shopping?"
"You know how Alina is, always changing plans. If she didn't, I wouldn't have had to wait for you there, right? Don't worry, their car isn't that fast. We'll catch up." As he spoke, the car veered onto a country road.
Pearl glanced out the window and saw nothing but a path leading into the mountains—no village in sight.
She frowned and was about to ask more when the country road turned into a main road, and a gas station appeared ahead.
The guy stopped to refuel, and Pearl took the chance to call Alina, but she didn't pick up.
Suddenly, someone else called her. Pearl looked up and saw it was RavenWing's men.
She was about to get out and greet them when the guy who had refueled walked over. Pearl, being cautious, signaled the men to leave.
There were two of them, originally sent by RavenWing to protect Pearl and Christopher, and they didn't expect to run into her on the road.
Watching the guy drive into the mountains, they quietly followed.
After driving for what felt like forever, they finally stopped. There were two other cars parked at the foot of the mountain.
Pearl looked at the cars and asked, "Is Alina in one of those cars?"
"We're late. Maybe they've already gone up the mountain. Come on, I'll take you up. There's a church up there."
'A church here? How did I not know about this?' Pearl wondered.
The path got rougher and harder to navigate, with no clear way forward. How could there be a church up there on such a treacherous mountain road? It was clear the guy had lied to her.
"I just messaged Alina. She said she's at the shopping street. Did you make a mistake?" Pearl picked up a tree branch and leaned against a tree, glaring at him.
He dropped the act and laughed. "Now you get it, huh? A bit late, don't you think? Just follow me up the mountain, or I'll take you right here."
"That person isn't your wife, right?" Pearl wanted to confirm if he was just coincidentally catching her or if someone had set this up. Seeing his sneer, she immediately understood.
This was a trap, and she had walked right into it.
The guy moved closer, and Pearl immediately fought back, but she underestimated his strength. She didn't expect him to be so skilled.
After a few moves, he disarmed her and hit her hard with the branch.
He smirked, "What? Still wanna fight? Didn't expect you to have some skills."
"Oh really? How about I show you something better?" Pearl whistled, and the two men who had been hiding in the shadows rushed out and attacked him from both sides, pinning him down in no time.
With the guy underfoot, Pearl squatted down, patted his face, and asked, "How many partners do you have?"
"Five. We saw you were alone, so we planned to have some fun. Sorry, we were wrong. Please let me go." He tried to take the blame for Alina, but Pearl wasn't buying it.
She smiled slightly and nodded to her men. "I'll leave this to you. Remember, don't let anyone know your identities."
She didn't go up the mountain because she had more important things to do.
It was just some petty grudge from the sports meet, but Alina wanted to ruin her. So, there was no need for her to hold back.
