Chapter 939 The Greatest Charm
The woman didn't mind; she knew most people wouldn't get involved in such matters.
Lyra was helping because she had a kind heart.
Even if things didn't turn out well, she wouldn't blame anyone.
Feeling a sense of responsibility, Lyra asked Jeffery about the meeting time and took a day off, pushing all her work aside.
When the time came, Jeffery drove to pick her up.
At the coffee shop.
"Hey, Ms. Cole, I'm Xander from Willow Creek Law Firm. Just call me Xander." Xander Cox extended his hand.
Lyra shook his hand and smiled, "Hi, Xander. Thanks for coming all the way from Willow Creek."
"No problem. I was already in town for something else. Plus, this is a favor for a friend, and I couldn't let him down."
After a few pleasantries, they sat down to talk.
Since Xander only had a rough idea of the situation, Lyra explained everything from start to finish.
Xander, being a competent lawyer, nodded along, occasionally asking questions and taking notes.
Lyra felt parched after speaking for so long.
Just as she reached for a drink, Jeffery slid a glass of water over to her. "Drink this. You've been feeling a bit under the weather lately. Warm water is better for your throat."
Lyra instinctively took the glass.
After drinking, she realized she had followed Jeffery's advice without thinking, and the glass seemed to be his own, though he hadn't drunk from it yet.
She glanced at him, wanting to say something.
He seemed completely unaware, focused on the menu, his expensive cufflinks catching the light, exuding an air of cold elegance.
She silently looked away and took another sip. Maybe he just didn't care?
Forget it, don't overthink it.
"I understand," Xander said, closing his notebook.
Lyra quickly put down her glass. "Xander, can you take this case?"
Her tone was a bit urgent.
Lyra wanted to help the mother and daughter escape their suffering. She couldn't stand by and watch a fellow woman in distress, even if they weren't her patients.
Xander adjusted his glasses. "I can, but... from what you've told me, this mother isn't financially well-off. Hiring a lawyer isn't cheap."
Lyra paused, mentally calculating her bank balance.
But she quickly realized it wasn't enough. She had given most of her money to the Hill family, and her current salary as a doctor wasn't high.
Hiring a regular lawyer might be possible, but Xander was a top-tier lawyer.
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Lyra asked, "How much would it cost to hire you, Xander? If I can manage, I'll pay for it."
Suddenly, Jeffery interrupted, "I'll cover it."
Lyra looked at him in surprise.
Jeffery repeated, "Don't worry about the money. I'll handle it."
There was no denying that a man was most attractive when he took care of the bill.
But besides being shocked, Lyra also felt a bit embarrassed.
After seeing Xander off, she hesitated, "You've spent so much again. I'll pay you back later."
Jeffery shook his head, "No need. I found the lawyer, so I'll cover the costs."
But Lyra still felt uneasy.
So, he stopped and stared at her from the driver's seat.
Lyra felt a bit uncomfortable under his gaze, her heart racing, and she was sure her face was red. "What is it? Why are you looking at me like that?"
Jeffery suddenly smiled, a barely noticeable curve, "If you really want to thank me, hurry up and finish writing a proper paper."
Lyra was speechless. Who keeps nagging someone about their paper? So unromantic!
She completely forgot how embarrassed she had been just moments ago, unable to even look at Jeffery.
With the lawyer arranged, the next step was to file a lawsuit.
This was beyond Lyra's control.
At this point, she could only leave it to the lawyer.
The woman came to the hospital specifically to thank her.
Lyra reassured her, "Don't thank me. What you need to do now is cooperate with the lawyer. Good luck. I believe in you. Get yourself and your daughter away from that monster as soon as possible!"
"I will!" The woman wiped her tears and left.
Word spread around the hospital.
Mia admired Lyra's kindness, "You're so kind-hearted. I like you even more. I wish there was an award just for you."
Lyra sighed, "There probably isn't."
But she didn't regret it.
Seeing her attitude, Mia gave up trying to persuade her.
And Lyra's words turned out to be prophetic. Trouble soon found her.
"Lyra! Who's Lyra? Get out of here!" A man stormed into the hospital, shouting and grabbing the front desk nurse.
The nurse, terrified by his bloodshot eyes and aggressive demeanor, tremblingly pointed him to Lyra's office.
He immediately headed there.
The others quickly called for help.
But it was too late. When it happened, Lyra had just finished seeing a patient, who hadn't even left yet.
The office door burst open, and the man stormed in. Sensing danger, Lyra stepped in front of the female patient and was slapped hard.
The slap left her seeing stars.
The patient screamed, "Who are you? Why are you hitting people?"
He grabbed Lyra's hair, "Who am I? Ask this bitch who I am! Meddling in my business, making my wife divorce me. Can't hit her, so I'll beat you to death!"
Lyra, enduring the pain, shouted to the terrified patient, "Go get help!"
The patient ran out in a panic.
Lyra sighed in relief.
But then her scalp felt like it was being torn apart as the man dragged her to the window. In that moment, Lyra's head was already outside.
The office was on the fourth floor, with no safety bars on the window, and it was large enough for an adult to fall through!
Realizing his intent, Lyra's heart raced, "What are you doing? There are cameras here. Aren't you afraid of being caught for murder?"
The man was about to sneer in response.
But Lyra wasn't really asking him.
Was she stupid? Trying to reason with someone clearly unhinged. She just wanted to distract him.
