Chapter 936 I Am His Boyfriend

Jeffery paused for a moment, his eyes lingering on her face before he nodded. "Sure, let me clean up a bit."

Lyra didn't think much of it at the time. It wasn't until the car stopped in front of the same temporary residence as before that she spoke up in surprise. "You still live here? I thought this was a friend's place."

"Yeah," Jeffery replied, casually pulling things out of the trunk. "I bought it from my friend."

As he said this, his eyes flickered towards her, a fleeting, unreadable glint in them. Unfortunately, Lyra, lost in her thoughts, missed this subtle moment. She knew nothing about Jeffery's social circle and didn't feel it was her place to ask.

Once inside, they were greeted by the familiar housekeeper.

Having met before, the housekeeper didn't stop her from entering the kitchen this time. Instead, she smiled and offered to help. But luck wasn't on their side; halfway through cooking, the gas went out, and the fridge was empty.

The housekeeper slapped her forehead in regret. "Oh no, I completely forgot! I'm so sorry, I'll go get some groceries right now."

"No need," Jeffery interjected at the right moment. "We'll go."

Both the housekeeper and Lyra looked up in surprise.

Lyra didn't mind the idea. Grocery shopping was a mundane task, but she realized she had never done it with Jeffery before. To her, shopping for groceries and eating at home together were intimate activities. The thought made her heart skip a beat.

The housekeeper noticed her reaction and couldn't hide her teasing smile. "Alright, you two go and come back quickly."

Jeffery grabbed his jacket and car keys, and they headed out. They drove to a nearby supermarket, which was still bustling with people in the fresh produce section.

Lyra pushed the cart while Jeffery walked beside her, picking out vegetables and meat. Looking at the price tags, Lyra couldn't help but mutter, "If we came a bit later, the discount section would be open."

Jeffery glanced at her, seemingly not hearing her clearly. Lyra quickly shook her head, pretending nothing happened.

Just then, a commotion erupted in the seafood section. People gathered like cats smelling fish. Lyra stood on tiptoe to see what was happening—it was a crazy discount on lobsters.

Recalling the delicious taste of lobster, she turned to Jeffery, her eyes sparkling. "Do you like lobster?"

Jeffery seemed to snap out of his thoughts, putting down a head of lettuce. "Yeah, I do."

With his confirmation, Lyra's competitive spirit ignited. She rolled up her sleeves, left a quick "Wait for me," and dashed off like an arrow, leaving Jeffery behind.

"Excuse me, coming through!" she called, holding up her shopping basket.

People stepped aside to avoid being hit by the basket. Lyra quickly scooped up a bunch of lobsters with a net, her sharp eyes picking the plumpest ones.

A nearby woman, seeing the dwindling supply, protested, "Leave some for us! It's hard to get them on a discount!"

Lyra, feeling the pressure of many eyes on her, smiled apologetically and added one more lobster to her basket. Thinking quickly, she pointed behind her. "Sorry, someone at home really loves these."

She just wanted an excuse to escape, knowing Jeffery was too far to hear.

The crowd looked in the direction she pointed, feeling skeptical. To their surprise, there really was a man standing there, tall and handsome.

Their eyes widened, and one of them grabbed Lyra's arm. "Hey, is that your boyfriend?"

Caught trying to sneak away, Lyra was at a loss for words.

Just then, a steady hand grasped her arm, gently pulling her out of the crowd. Jeffery had somehow appeared behind her. His voice, calm yet firm, cut through the noise.

"Yeah, I'm her boyfriend. She doesn't have many hobbies, but she loves it when I eat lobster. Please, let her take a few more."

His words not only explained Lyra's aggressive behavior but also subtly claimed his place.

The entire seafood section fell into an awkward silence, including Lyra and the crowd.

It wasn't until they were far away that Lyra snapped out of it, her face flushed.

Jeffery looked at her, his eyes filled with a teasing glint. "Why's your face so red? You feeling feverish?"

He reached out to touch her forehead.

Lyra quickly stepped back, embarrassed. It wasn't a fever; it was her racing heart.

"I'm fine!" she said, fanning herself dramatically. "It's just hot in here with all these people!"

Jeffery saw through her act but didn't call her out. He remembered his friend Gregory's advice—take the initiative.

It seemed like a brilliant idea now. That evening, Lyra showcased her cooking skills, serving a plate of delicious-looking lobster. Jeffery, true to his word, ate several, proving his "love for lobster."

Jeffery's work ethic was impressive. He seamlessly transitioned into his new role, quickly gaining the hospital's admiration.

A few days later, before Lyra's exam results were out, Jeffery shared some big news—the hospital was looking to fill the deputy director position.

Lyra was stunned, pointing to herself in disbelief. "You... don't mean me, do you?"

"Yes," Jeffery nodded confidently. "I believe you can do it."

Lyra wanted to retort, "It's not about what you think, it's about what I think!"

She sighed. "Aren't you overestimating me?"

She knew she had improved, but in the medical field, seniority mattered. Most leaders were seasoned veterans in their fifties. She glanced at the man beside her.

Of course, except for this exceptional case.

But Jeffery was Jeffery. For anyone else, such a young person in a high position would raise doubts about their competence and connections.

Lyra found the idea absurd and deflating. "No way. If I run for deputy director, people will gossip, and I won't get the votes."

Jeffery raised an eyebrow, his tone firm. "How do you know? At least you have my vote."

Lyra's heart skipped a beat.

His words, though absurd, were undeniably tempting.

But remembering her past "wishful thinking," she forced herself to stay grounded. "The director's vote is important, but one vote won't get me elected. I can't do it."

However, Jeffery made the decision.

"Let's see what happens," he said, his gaze encouraging. "Consider it... a try."

Lyra thought about it and agreed. It made sense, so she didn't argue further.

As expected, her candidacy caused a stir in the hospital. Even her friend Mia came to ask if she was joking. In just a few days, at least ten people had come to probe her intentions.

She sighed, feeling like her office door was about to be worn out.

To everyone, she gave the same calm explanation, with a hint of unnoticed anticipation.

"It's just a try. Whether it works out or not, it doesn't matter."
