Chapter 27 You Bought the Cheapest Clothes
The morning sunlight seeped through the curtains into the room, and Pearl slowly opened her eyes. She felt a bit dizzy and had a dull ache in her lower body.
Recalling the scene at the class reunion last night, she couldn't help but frown.
Pearl reluctantly sat up, lifted the blanket, and checked herself. Her lower body was a bit swollen, which startled her. What exactly happened last night?
The last image in her memory was Oscar carrying her home, and after that, she couldn't remember anything.
"Could it be Oscar?" Pearl felt a sudden panic. Hastily rising, she made her way to the medicine cabinet, carefully administering a few drops of anti-inflammatory solution. The sudden stinging sensation elicited a gasp, beads of sweat forming on her forehead
Enduring the discomfort, Pearl took out a box of contraceptives and swallowed them. After doing all this, she finally breathed a sigh of relief, only to find out that Oscar was not at home.
After tidying herself up, Pearl decided to go out to buy some daily necessities and food. Walking on the street, she couldn't help but think of Oscar.
Even though they were already married, Oscar always kept a certain distance from her. Pearl knew that his heart still belonged to Haley.
Passing by a newly opened clothing store, Pearl stopped in her tracks. The window displayed a simple yet high-quality men's coat.
For the past few years, Pearl had been arranging Oscar's clothing and meals, thinking that with the change of seasons, Oscar would need some new clothes. So, she decided to go into the store to pick out a new one for him.
Pearl casually picked up a black coat, paired with a sweater in the same color. Imagining how handsome Oscar would look in it, she thought it would suit his image well.
"This outfit would definitely match his style."
"Miss, you have a good eye. This is our latest arrival, it looks simple but very stylish when worn. Take a look at our magazine, many celebrity models are wearing this style, it looks great!" the saleswoman said.
Although Oscar has many tailored suits, Pearl feels that the clothes she buys for him will have more of a lived-in feel. She is satisfied with her choice.
"Ms. Garcia, you're here. The men's wool coat you reserved has arrived."
Upon hearing this, Pearl looked over and saw Haley wearing sunglasses walking into the store, coincidentally meeting her gaze.
"Isn't that Ms. Harris? Are you shopping for Oscar?" Haley removed her glasses, observing Pearl selecting men's clothing, a subtle smile gracing her lips.
"Who else would I shop for but my husband?" Pearl responded, trying to maintain her composure.
Haley felt a twinge of unease in her heart. Pearl, asserting her position as Oscar's wife, delivered a cutting remark. Unwilling to yield, Haley approached and disdainfully flicked the coat on the hanger with her finger.
"How could you possibly choose clothes like this for Oscar? It seems this is all within your budget," Haley remarked.
Pearl experienced a wave of humiliation but refrained from reacting. She understood that her financial circumstances were not on par with Haley's, yet the sincerity of her gesture remained invaluable.
"The worth of clothing lies not in its cost but in the person who wears it," Pearl stated calmly. "I believe Oscar will appreciate it."
Haley sneered, "You're so naive. Why would someone like Oscar appreciate such inexpensive clothing? You really don't understand him."
Pearl felt a pang in her heart. She acknowledged that Haley's words held some truth. Despite their years of marriage, she struggled to grasp Oscar's true sentiments.
