Chapter 769 Do You Know Benjamin's Father?

That was just how George was.

He'd been so good to Azalea in other ways, so she didn't let that one thing bother her.

"Did the test results come back? How's the baby?" Nathaniel asked, changing the subject.

Azalea smiled. "The baby's fine. The doctor just asked about my condition. No bleeding, just some stomach pain, probably from stress. The doctor said I should rest at home, avoid any heavy lifting, and take some meds to keep the pregnancy stable."

"Then you need to stay home and rest for the next few days, no running around with Saskia," Nathaniel said as they walked out together. When they passed Saskia, he gave her a look.

Azalea was like a rope, one end held by him, the other end tied to Saskia.

The more Azalea clung to him, the tighter the rope bound Saskia.

"Saskia, are you coming home with us or staying to visit Benjamin?" Azalea asked.

Saskia had come to the hospital to see Benjamin, so of course, she chose the latter. Plus, she wanted to avoid Nathaniel.

"Then we'll head home first. After you see Benjamin, remember to take a cab home. Don't take the bus; it's too long and crowded," Azalea advised.

Saskia watched them leave until the elevator doors closed, then she took the stairs up to see Benjamin.

Once they got in the car, Azalea transferred some money to Saskia's phone. It wasn't much, but enough for a month's worth of cab rides.

"Mom, why are you so late today?" Benjamin ran to Saskia as soon as he saw her.

He hugged her tightly. "I heard people arguing outside the room earlier, and one of them sounded like you. Was someone bullying you?"

"No, I just got here," Saskia lied.

She didn't want Benjamin to worry.

"Good, as long as no one was bullying you," Benjamin sighed in relief.

He looked up seriously and said, "I need to grow up fast so I can protect you. If anyone dares to bully you, I'll punch them!"

He waved his little fist. Saskia felt a mix of comfort and heartache; Benjamin was so understanding.

At his age, he should be carefree and playing, not worrying about protecting his mom.

"Sweetie, how are you feeling today? Any discomfort?" Saskia asked as she held Benjamin on her lap, soothing him.

Benjamin shook his head. "No, the nurse gave me new medicine, and it works much better than the old one."

Saskia smiled at him, but it was a strained smile.

Due to financial constraints, Benjamin had been using domestic medicine, which was effective but not as good as imported ones and had side effects.

In the hospital, money was everything.

Just then, Saskia's phone rang.

She quickly answered.

It was the housekeeping agency. "Saskia, I know you could use some extra cash, so I immediately thought of you when this job came up. Do you have a moment to talk? Maplewood Estates is looking for a cleaner for a 1,500-square-foot house with two cats and a dog. The job involves daily cleaning, feeding the pets, and walking the dog. They're offering $50 an hour.""I've got time. I'll head over right now," Saskia said quickly.

The usual rate for house cleaners around here was $20 an hour, so $50 was a steal.

Saskia could make a few hundred bucks from this gig, and she wasn't about to pass that up.

The agency staff sounded pleased. "I'll send you the apartment number. They use a keypad lock that can be opened remotely, so you can just head over. They're pretty well-off, and they expect a lot—attention to detail, being proactive, and no stealing. If you do a good job, there might be long-term work in the future!"

Long-term work!

Saskia put down her phone and hugged Benjamin. "I'm sorry, sweetie. I wanted to spend more time with you, but I have to go to work now."

Of course, she wanted to stay with Benjamin.

But if she stayed, she couldn't make money, and without money, Benjamin couldn't get his medicine.

What good would her presence be then?

"Mom, you don't need to apologize. If anyone should apologize, it's me," Benjamin said, holding her hand. "You spend all your money on my medical bills. You're the best mom in the world."

Hearing this, Saskia felt warm inside.

At least Benjamin understood her.

Before leaving, she peeled an apple for Benjamin, then took a cab to Maplewood Estates for work.

Meanwhile, Nathaniel drove Azalea home but didn't get out of the car.

"George, aren't you coming in?" Azalea asked, unbuckling her seatbelt and looking at him. "You've been so busy lately. Don't overwork yourself; we have enough money."

She wasn't one to constantly chase after more; she felt their life was already pretty great.

Living in such a big house was something she never dreamed of before.

"Once the baby arrives, all our energy will be focused on the child. Right now, I want to cherish the time we have together. George, I love you for who you are, not just for the money in the bank. Seeing you so exhausted worries me." Azalea's words were heartfelt.

During their time living together, Nathaniel had been sleeping in the study almost every night.

At first, Azalea was puzzled and brought him soup several times. Each time, she found him working hard, which made her both worried and touched.

"If I don't earn more money, how can I support you, the baby, and your sister?" Nathaniel paused and continued, "You've given her hundreds of thousands of dollars, and it's still not enough. She even wants to mortgage our house."

"No, that was my idea, not Saskia's. She's really struggling, and I want to help her. Otherwise, Benjamin could die," Azalea explained quickly.

She wasn't trying to throw away money. It was truly urgent for Benjamin.

Even if Saskia had to repay the money slowly over her lifetime, it was better than Benjamin facing death.

They were family; Azalea couldn't be so heartless.

"Do you know who Benjamin's father is?" Nathaniel asked, trying to see if she knew the truth.

Azalea shook her head. She wasn't hiding anything; she genuinely didn't know.
