Chapter 287 You Wouldn't Betray Me, Would You?'
Janetta frowned and said, "Are you scared out of your mind? What do you mean by protecting yourself? Think you can compete with men? Think you're a martial arts master? Get real. You're not a deity; you're a pregnant woman. Feeling guilty won't fix anything!"
Pearl blamed herself for being weak, with so many people wanting her dead. She couldn't fight back and dragged others down with her. Janetta was right; Barbara was still out there.
Pearl hugged Janetta, leaning on her shoulder. "I'm scared. This isn't just a simple kidnapping. I can't fight them!"
She had felt this fear in the trunk, which weighed heavily on her.
Janetta's expression softened and she comforted Pearl gently. "Don't worry, I'm here with you."
Pearl tried to calm her fear. She thought, 'No matter how fragile I am, I have to face this, especially with my connection to Barbara.'
The words on the bridge came out spontaneously; it didn't mean she remembered anything. The dark trunk made her feel fear. When she saw Barbara, she spoke from her feelings. Barbara's reaction showed she had really experienced it.
Pearl was so confused and had no answers.
Pearl thought, 'Barbara must have been locked in a small dark room before. No wonder she was so scared.'
Pearl waited outside for hours, late into the night. The surgery took eight hours. The longer it took, the more serious it was. Exhausted, she didn't dare sleep, fearing bad news.
Finally, the surgery light went off. Pearl stood up as Oscar was wheeled out, still unconscious. The doctors were sweaty.
Pearl asked, "Doctor, how is he?"
"The surgery was successful, but he's not out of danger. We'll know by tomorrow if he wakes up," the doctor said.
Pearl's heart leaped, unable to relax. Oscar was moved to the ICU. She could only watch from a distance, looking at his pale face through the glass.
Janetta stayed with Pearl. "Oscar will be fine. He'll wake up tomorrow!"
She believed so.
Pearl stayed silent, pretending to be fine. "You must be tired. Go rest."
Janetta replied, "How can I sleep? I'll stay with you. I know you can't sleep; you'll wait for him to wake up."
Pearl could't rest, either could Janetta. Pearl's kidnapping had left Janetta constantly worried she'd be taken again. Janetta thought, 'This hospital isn't safe. Luckily, Oscar brought troops. No one will dare take Pearl now.'
Meanwhile, the whip lashed brutally on Barbara, each strike meant to be deadly.
Barbara's body was covered in scars, but she didn't make a sound. Maybe she was used to this life; the pain didn't even register anymore. Eventually, she collapsed and couldn't get up.
Donald, her superior, was sipping tea, indifferent to her suffering. Only when she collapsed did he put down his cup and glare at her. "Did you let that woman go on purpose?"
Barbara lay on the ground, struggling to crawl towards him. "I didn't."
Donald said, "You hesitated when you could've thrown her off."
Barbara, pale and disheveled, grabbed his pant leg. "She was holding my hand. I couldn't throw her off even if I wanted to. Please forgive me. I won't fail again!"
Donald kicked her away. Barbara groaned, tasting blood, but all she wanted was to survive. "Your target is Oscar. He was shot and is near death. I did contribute."
Donald walked over, grabbed her chin harshly, and said coldly, "You all have worthless lives. If it weren't for me, you'd be dead."
Barbara endured the pain, clenching her fists, her eyes weakly looking at him. "I know, you are my foster father."
They were all raised by Donald. But besides fear and reverence, they had no feelings for him. They knew they were just tools to make money. If anything happened, they'd be sacrifices. Even so, they couldn't resist. From the day their hands were stained with blood, they were worse than rats, only able to survive in dark corners. They wanted to live in the sunlight, but they no longer had the chance.
Donald narrowed his eyes and asked coldly, "Where is Jeffery?"
He suspected ulterior motives; he hadn't seen them in a while. Just as he finished speaking, footsteps echoed, which was slow but firm. Donald knew it was Jeffery. He threw Barbara to the ground again.
Barbara was in so much pain she almost fainted, but she had to keep her eyes open because she knew Jeffery had arrived.
Jeffery stood at the doorway, wearing a white coat, hands in his pockets. He knew this place was dangerous but showed no sign of backing down. Donald immediately lashed out with a whip, but Jeffery didn't dodge. The whip left a bloody mark on Jeffery's face. His eyes showed no emotion.
"Finally, you are back," Donald said viciously. "What have you been doing? Barbara risked her life for you, and you were out there enjoying yourself!"
Jeffery calmly walked over, smiled at Donald, and said, "This is where I came from. I should return here."
Donald sat down. "You didn't complete your mission!"
Jeffery said nonchalantly, "Isn't my mission to dissect bodies?"
Donald was still dissatisfied, staring intently at Jeffery. "But I sense something else. Have you been contemplating betrayal?"
Barbara was terrified, crawling over despite her fear. Jeffery's cold, slender fingers touched Donald's face as he continued to smile. "What do you think?"
Barbara's face turned even paler, her hands involuntarily clenching.
