Chapter 273 He is a Soldier
She was startled and almost screamed but didn't fall completely into the water.
Oscar supported her hips with one hand and her back with the other, keeping her head above water. She was soaked but not choking.
The pool water was warm.
She was both angry and embarrassed, glaring at him with her beautiful eyes.
Instinctively, she wrapped her arms around his shoulders to keep from falling.
"What are you doing?" Pearl's tone was sharp.
Oscar pressed her against the pool edge, holding her hips with both hands, their eyes level. "If I hadn't said that, you wouldn't have come over."
Pearl tried to push him away, but he stood firm. "You were all serious about getting back to work, but what are you doing now? Do you want to end the interview? It seems your mind isn't on business. If you're not serious, then I won't stick around!"
She struggled to get up, but Oscar grabbed her hand. "Work will get done. Ms. Harris, who's always so dedicated, should relax sometimes."
Pearl shot back, "Being dragged into the water by you doesn't help me relax."
"Swim with me for a bit."
"Swimming isn't part of our work. If you need a beautiful woman to accompany you, I'm sure plenty would be interested, but I don't like swimming."
Oscar didn't seem angry; he teased her, "Many people want to see me but haven't succeeded. Is it so hard for you to swim with me? It seems Ms. Harris has a higher status than I do."
"If someone sees us like this, it would be hard to explain," Pearl said coldly. "You may not care about your reputation, but I do. There are plenty of women associated with you, and while you may not mind, I do. Show some respect."
Oscar looked at her, amused despite her cold demeanor. "You're my wife; what reputation do you need? Wouldn't it be better for others to see how loving we are?"
When did he become so cunning? Pearl felt a bit angry. He never used their marriage as an excuse before.
Now that they were about to divorce, he mentioned it constantly. "Oscar, have you no shame?"
Oscar wiped the water off her face with his thumb and said softly, "I'm about to lose my wife; what do I need shame for?"
"You're despicable!"
Pearl couldn't help but curse him.
Oscar, who rarely heard her curse, looked at her tenderly. "If it helps you calm down, you can curse me all you want."
Seeing it wasn't working, Pearl decided to stop arguing.
Oscar, however, had more to say. "Magdalen has been discharged from the hospital. You didn't come to see her; she asked about you. And Hunter, since you left the Brown family, he hasn't seen you. He said next time I go back, I should bring you to see him."
"Don't involve others!" Pearl knew what he was implying.
He thought she would be reluctant to leave, but she wasn't falling for it. "If you have time, you should tell them we're getting a divorce because of irreconcilable differences. If you were more sensible, you'd sign the divorce papers, and we could end this cleanly."
"Do you have to be so heartless?"
Pearl turned away, her voice cold. "You don't get it, do you? I'm pregnant with someone else's child. Can you accept that?"
Oscar's expression finally changed. Her words hit him hard.
"Do you really have to bring this up?" His tone grew colder.
"I'm saying this to minimize the hurt for both of us."
Oscar's eyes locked onto hers. He had tried to forget this, but she brought it up again. "Just get rid of the child."
"I don't want to."
Oscar's lips pressed into a thin line, and he stepped back. "I can give you time to think it over."
Pearl looked up at him. "I don't need it."
Oscar asked again, "Then tell me, whose child is it?"
"Magee's."
Oscar's fists clenched, veins bulging on his forehead, his voice low and cold. "Who is Magee? Pearl, does this person even exist?"
"He does." Pearl gazed into his deep eyes. "I told you, he's my hero. He saved me!"
A rush of heat surged to Oscar's head. He had heard this name countless times from her, but this person had never existed. He shouted, "What if this person never existed? If Magee is imaginary, how did he appear in your life? You've been deceived!"
Pearl's heart tightened, and she looked at Oscar in shock.
Her innocent eyes, filled with surprise and helplessness, seemed to lash at Oscar's heart.
At that moment, Oscar felt a pang of reluctance. He didn't want to shatter Pearl's dream. Magee was so important to her, a pillar of support. How could he destroy her illusion?
"I don't know," Oscar said softly. "I've never seen your Magee."
Pearl stood there for a long time, her palms sweating. 'He said Magee was imaginary. Why would he say that? But then he said he didn't know.'
Pearl's hand relaxed a bit, and she lowered her eyes. "He's in the military. It's hard for him to come back. It's normal that you haven't seen him."
Oscar furrowed and then relaxed. "A soldier?"
"Yes," Pearl said calmly. "He's a soldier."
Looking at Pearl, she didn't seem to be lying. But Oscar was suspicious that Magee was deceiving her. "What's Magee's full name? I have friends in the military; I can ask around."
Pearl's heart tightened even more. "Why are you so curious?"
"You said he saved you," Oscar replied. "I want to know who this person is that you care so much about. Even if I lose, I want to lose willingly."
He thought all of this was fabricated by her. It couldn't be possible for her to actually find someone like that.
Pearl hesitated. "He will come back. You'll be able to meet him when he returns. There's no rush now."
Oscar's brows furrowed again. She was still protecting Magee. But he felt Magee was deceiving her. If this person really existed, he would have found out. Even if he did exist, no one had ever seen Magee, not even her parents. When had Pearl become so reckless, even getting pregnant with his child?
Oscar fell into deep thought. There were only two possibilities: either this man was really deceiving her with a fake name, or Pearl was lying!
