Chapter 885 Lyra
Pearl stood in front of him, her voice firm. "This is a huge decision. How can you not take it seriously? Even the nurses and doctors at your hospital get time off. Are you some kind of machine that never stops?"
Jeffery sighed, "I get it. You want to adopt a kid. But an adopted child isn't the same as your own. If you have the time and energy, why not have one yourself?"
Pearl's concerns were valid.
Many adoptive families faced challenges with their adopted children.
Jeffery chuckled, "You already have two kids. Why would I adopt someone else's child? RavenWing told me to take good care of you and Christopher. When Christopher grows up, he won't leave his uncle all alone, right?"
By then, Christopher would bring him into the mansion, and he would be under the same roof as Pearl, which was a form of companionship.
Pearl was exasperated at Jeffery's reasoning. "How is that the same? Stop talking nonsense. I don't know if my dad gave you any tasks, but what I need you to understand is that you need someone to take care of you. I'm serious."
Pearl was resolute in her decisions.
She had printed out Jeffery's profile, intending to put it on a dating site.
But at the last moment, she hesitated.
She meant well, but if Jeffery wasn't on board, it would just burden him.
She shredded the profile and threw it in the trash.
When Oscar came back, he immediately noticed the worry on Pearl's face.
"What's wrong? Hasn't everything been going well lately? Nothing's happened, right?"
With nothing happening recently, Oscar couldn't understand why Pearl looked so troubled.
Pearl laid it all out, "I'm thinking about Jeffery. Look at everyone around us; they all have their own stable lives. But look at Jeffery, all this time, and he's still alone."
"I was going to put his profile on a dating site, but then I thought, if he didn't agree to it, it would be too much. But I'm worried."
Pearl had always been aware of Jeffery's sacrifices for her, which was why she wanted to use her abilities to help him.
"Good thing you didn't post it. But this is something he has to decide for himself. No matter how anxious others are, it won't help. Besides, isn't Jeffery in Willow Creek right now?"
Oscar pulled Pearl into his arms, "He's in Willow Creek, under my watch. If anything happens, I'll be the first to know. You don't need to worry so much."
Pearl nodded.
There was no need for Pearl to arrange anything on a dating site. Every day, a crowd of interns gathered outside Jeffery's office.
They were all there to see Jeffery.
Some wanted to get close to him through work, while others were bold enough to pursue him directly.
But Jeffery turned them all away.
Until there was a knock on the door.
"Come in."
Jeffery had made it clear to those who secretly watched him that unless it was work-related, he wouldn't see them.
They were also afraid of making him angry, so they didn't dare.
If someone knocked, it had to be work-related.
Indeed, it was work. Jeffery's assistant came in, "Mr. Gray, there's a big problem with Dr. Chapman's surgery. They need you to step in immediately."
"Why didn't you call?" Jeffery's face turned grim.
After spending five years by Pearl's side and now being in Willow Creek, Jeffery was particularly concerned about the hospital's reputation. If there were a medical accident, the hospital's name would be ruined.
The assistant looked helpless. "Mr. Gray, your personal and office lines are both busy. Given your current popularity..."
Interns gathering outside the office was one thing, but there were also patients, women who came specifically to see him, students, and even wealthy women. They somehow got his number and called constantly, keeping the lines busy.
If it weren't an emergency, the assistant wouldn't have rushed over. Jeffery didn't need to handle it personally.
Jeffery had no time for his assistant's excuses. He got up and headed out. As he stepped out of the office, the female interns stared in awe.
"He's so handsome and young, already a director."
"So handsome! And I heard he doesn't have a girlfriend!"
"He's performed so many surgeries himself! And he reviews academic papers and gives lectures."
"Look at those well-defined hands. I can't imagine what it would be like to be held by someone so outstanding."
The scene was chaotic.
Some even rushed in front of Jeffery, blocking his way.
"Mr. Gray, if you stay with me, I can open a few more hospitals for you. I'll make you the top medical expert in Willow Creek."
"Mr. Gray, don't listen to her. I'm younger. If you keep me, I can create more value for you."
"Get out."
Jeffery usually ignored these people, but now he was genuinely angry because a critical surgery was underway.
Even though the assistant had brought security, they couldn't hold them back.
And the women? They always thought Jeffery was gentle and refined, speaking softly. They never expected him to have such a fiery side.
They quickly stepped aside, giving Jeffery a clear path.
Jeffery swiftly changed into sterile surgical attire, disinfected, and entered the operating room.
The operating room was a bloody scene.
Jeffery walked over, "What's the situation?"
"The patient's cancer cells have spread extensively, and there's a cyst in the chest area. I can't handle it alone," said a pleasant female voice.
Even in such a sudden situation, she remained calm and handled everything well. Jeffery took over, and she assisted him.
The surgery continued for over an hour. When Jeffery made the final perfect stitch, everyone in the operating room breathed a sigh of relief.
Jeffery looked at the woman who had assisted him and asked quietly, "What's your name?"
With so many people around, including female patients and nurses, he rarely paid much attention to women.
The pleasant voice replied, "I'm Lyra Cole."
Jeffery frowned, "Are you the Lyra who's always ahead, winning all sorts of awards?"
In internal meetings, Jeffery had heard her name. Over the past month, she had received numerous bonuses and commissions.
Lyra remained composed, "That's me."
Jeffery's thoughts returned to the present. He said calmly, "Get some rest. Come see me tomorrow. You'll be rewarded for your work today."
