Chapter 549 What Exactly Have You Been Through
As soon as Louis finished his words, Paloma had something on the tip of her tongue.
But before she could spit it out, Louis jumped in, "Look, I promised Jimena, and I gotta stick to my word. Plus, she's cool with me."
Paloma's breath hitched. He was all about duty, which was why he didn't keep any women around.
Not minding Jimena, and with her always hanging around Louis, those sayings "familiarity breeds fondness" and "time shows true colors" hit the nail on the head.
Paloma's heart felt like it was getting squeezed. She was just a regular girl, and her status was way different from Jimena's.
Louis wanted a First Lady who could stand tall beside him, not some girl from the slums like her.
Even though she'd busted her butt over the years, the gap between them never closed.
"Mr. Mitchell, if she's the one you dig, I wish you all the best. Hope you stay happy." That was all Paloma could muster.
"Thanks." Louis nodded.
With that, Paloma turned on her heel.
She'd been hustling to change her life and status, but now, with her goal gone, she felt totally powerless.
Paloma walked out of Louis's turf, but she didn't get far before she was stopped.
A bunch of dudes, taller and beefier than her, came at her with bad intentions.
Paloma's hand went for her gun, but they were quicker.
A gun was shoved against her head, and a cold, harsh voice whispered in her ear. "If you wanna live, you better do what we say and come with us!"
During the last war, she lived in constant fear of gunfire. Her body instinctively feared the gun, but this was Louis's territory; she couldn't cause trouble for him, so she stayed quiet and went along with them.
She had no clue how long they walked before they shoved her into a small room.
The guys all pulled out their weapons and aimed at her.
"If you got something to say, spit it out," Paloma said, ice in her voice.
A mocking laugh echoed, "I thought you'd be scared stiff, but you're so chill. No wonder you're trying to snag Louis."
The voice wasn't deep or old, but it had a robotic vibe, especially since he hadn't shown his face.
Paloma's brow furrowed. "Who are you? What do you want? Why are you after me?"
She didn't see why they were threatening her.
"It's simple. There are things you can't pull off alone, but we can help." He laughed mockingly again.
Paloma knew nothing came for free.
She said coldly, "What's the catch?"
"You used to know Pearl, and Louis is Pearl's brother. If Jimena can win Louis over by sticking around, why can't you? We can help you with that, make Louis yours. But you'll need to work with us behind the scenes to get close to Louis!" he man stated, showing he was driven.
Paloma knew Louis had big dreams, even though she wanted to be with him.
Louis had a high status, but he was down-to-earth, always thinking about the future of the Eldorians. He taught them how to farm and even taught kids to read and write. During that time, Louis gave gifts to the kids and even brought her some too.
As for what Louis was like? Once he disliked someone, there was no winning him over. Trying to force it would just make him hate her more. If she tried to force it that way, Louis would always despise her, and she'd never get to be with him.
But Paloma knew she had to play along for now.
She smiled and said, "There are tons of women who like Louis. Why pick me? I'm just a nobody with no background."
"It's because you're a nobody that you won't be suspected. Don't you want Louis by your side forever? Think about it, Louis is amazing, and your kid with him would have the best genes." Seeing Paloma stay quiet, the guy kept pushing.
What he said had crossed Paloma's mind a million times. More than being with Louis, she didn't want him to hate her.
She smiled. "You're right. What's the plan? Tell me, and I'll follow it."
She knew why they picked her—because she was a nobody, easy to control, and could be bought with a little benefit.
"I'll tell you the plan, but to ensure your loyalty..." He trailed off, and Paloma suddenly felt a sharp pain in her skin.
She knew she'd been injected with poison.
He threatened, "If you disobey, this poison will make you wish you were dead!"
As soon as he finished, Paloma was in so much pain she rolled on the ground, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead, her face twisted in agony, but she didn't make a sound.
After several minutes of excruciating pain, she was on the verge of passing out.
But she bit her tongue, trying to stay conscious. The guy squatted in front of her and said, "I didn't expect you to endure it, but this poison has no cure. Think carefully, don't let your death ruin your future and drag your family down."
With that, he and his men left.
Paloma was left alone. She weakly stood up and staggered towards her dream, Louis.
When Louis saw Paloma on the brink of death, he was shocked and quickly supported her. "Paloma, what happened to you in just half an hour?"
Seeing Louis's face and realizing she was in his arms, Paloma felt a sense of satisfaction.
"Mr. Mitchell, someone kidnapped me. They injected me with poison and wanted me to cooperate with them. They promised me that if I did, I could have you," Paloma explained in a faint voice.
She gave a bitter smile. At that moment, she desperately wanted to touch Louis's face, but she didn't dare.
To her, Louis was flawless, exceptional, and untouchable.
