Chapter 734 They Are Doing Well
He didn't know how much longer he had to live, so every hug mattered. He wanted to hold on a little longer while he still could.
When the time came, he wanted to leave without regrets.
Pearl sighed to herself. No wonder people say grandparents have a special bond with their grandchildren. RavenWing was so gentle with Christopher and Emily.
If she hadn't seen it with her own eyes, she wouldn't have believed it.
Now that Emily was on formula, but Christopher hadn't eaten yet, she figured RavenWing probably hadn't eaten either. "I'll go out and get some food. What do you all want?"
"Mom, I want a burger and mashed potatoes!" Christopher eagerly took the chance to order, excited about eating out.
RavenWing didn't have any specific cravings. "Just something light, preferably with lots of vegetables."
Given his current health, anything spicy or greasy would be hard to digest and would only burden his body.
"Alright, I'll be back soon." Pearl turned and left.
His eating habits had changed so much. She needed to ask the doctor what was going on.
RavenWing guessed Pearl wouldn't give up easily.
So after Pearl left the hospital, he went to see the doctor first. "I hope you can keep my condition a secret from my family."
"If it were a minor illness, we could do that. But your condition is serious, and your family has a right to know." The doctor immediately refused.
As a son, he hoped his parents would tell him if they were sick so the family could discuss it together. As a doctor, he'd seen too much. Not telling the family, especially when the patient refused treatment, could lead to trouble later.
"If my daughter finds out, she'll worry. I don't want to see her upset. If you're worried about her causing trouble, I can sign a statement with the hospital. This is my decision, and I'll take full responsibility for whatever happens. I won't hold the hospital accountable."
RavenWing knew what they were concerned about, so he offered this solution.
The doctor was still hesitant. "Even if we help you keep it a secret, it won't last long. As your condition worsens, your daughter will eventually notice. What then?"
Cancer affects more than just lifespan; it brings various complications.
"Then we'll keep it a secret until we can't anymore. Doctor, please, don't tell her. I've let her down too much in the past. I don't want to burden her now." The more RavenWing spoke, the more the doctor felt for him.
He didn't know what RavenWing had done in his younger years, but he could see that RavenWing was a good father now.
It was true what they said: birth, aging, illness, and death were all fated.
Finally, the doctor nodded. "I agree. If your daughter asks, I'll say it's patient confidentiality and she should ask you directly. Whether you tell her is up to you."
"Thanks, doc," RavenWing said, grateful.
He went back to the room to play with Christopher and Emily.
Before long, Pearl returned with the food. Instead of heading straight to the room, she made a detour to the doctor's office.
She closed the door behind her. "Doctor, I need to know what's going on with my dad. What's he sick with?"
"That's confidential. I can't share that information," the doctor replied, noticing the concern in Pearl's eyes.
But he had promised RavenWing to keep it a secret, so he stuck to his response. "I suggest you talk directly with him."
"But he's my father, and I think he's seriously ill. The family has a right to know." Pearl had already asked RavenWing.
But that got her nowhere.
RavenWing was determined to keep it a secret. She had no other option but to ask the doctor.
However, the doctor wouldn't budge. "The family does have a right to know, but the patient's wishes take priority. I still suggest you talk it over with him."
"I understand. Thank you." Pearl realized she wouldn't get any answers.
She returned to the room, handed the burger to Christopher, and took out two vegetable salads.
One for her, one for RavenWing.
"Pearl, if you're busy these days, why not let Emily stay with me? The nanny can come too. We can take care of her together, and you can join us for dinner after Christopher's school," RavenWing suggested while eating.
This was the life he dreamed of.
Pearl agreed. Seeing the new gray hairs on RavenWing's head, she had a feeling they might not have many more chances to see each other.
After dinner, they played in the room until evening. Pearl then held Emily, took Christopher's hand, and said goodbye to RavenWing. "We'll head home now. We'll visit you again soon."
"Alright, take it slow on the way home. Text me when you get there." RavenWing watched them leave until they were out of sight, then turned back.
The room had been lively in the afternoon, but now it was just him, cold and quiet.
He sat alone for a while, then called Louis on a video call.
Louis had finished his work and was in the bedroom with Jimena, both smiling happily.
They greeted RavenWing together.
"You two seem to be doing well," RavenWing said.
You could tell how someone was doing just by their demeanor. It couldn't be faked.
Louis and Jimena were happy, and so were Pearl and Oscar. Knowing they were all well made him feel at ease.
When Pearl got home, she handed Emily and Christopher to Calliope.
She was determined to find out about RavenWing's condition.
Since the doctor wouldn't say, she had to find another way. She couldn't just ignore it.
Soon, Oscar came home. Instead of playing with Emily and Christopher as usual, he took Pearl to their bedroom and locked the door.
Seeing him like this, Pearl knew he had something important to say, and her expression turned serious.
