Chapter 928 Surgery Successful
As the surgery time approached, Lyra worked overtime, meticulously checking for any possible oversights.
Before entering the operating room, she took a deep breath.
"Lyra, you got this," the nurse beside her encouraged.
This surgery was highly specialized, and the assistants and nurses were not from the hospital but arranged by the project, specifically from Ruben's side.
With no familiar faces around, Lyra felt a bit anxious. She rarely had the chance to lead a surgery, let alone one without anyone she could trust.
But there was no turning back now; the arrow was already on the bowstring.
Lyra put on her gloves.
Just as she was about to go in, she caught a glimpse of a figure out of the corner of her eye. He stood silently not far away, watching her, his eyes filled with unspoken emotions.
Seeing her look over, Jeffery's lips curved into a slight smile.
All her anxiety and worry vanished, and Lyra felt a surge of energy.
As long as she wasn't alone, she had the courage to move forward!
The surgery lasted a long time. Any surgery involving internal medicine was complex, especially those near the heart and bone marrow, which were the most taxing.
Lyra was fully focused, not daring to blink for fear of making a mistake.
Time ticked by, and the operating room was eerily quiet.
Finally, the scalpel was placed on the tray.
Lyra removed her mask and gloves, beaming, "We did it!"
Outside the operating room, the "In Surgery" light remained on. The man waiting outside stood silently like a statue, not seeming worried, just waiting.
Waiting for the person he was waiting for to come out and tell him she succeeded with a smile on her face.
Ruben walked over, "It's been so long, I think it's safe to say I've won the bet, don't you think?"
Jeffery's expression turned cold, giving Ruben a frosty glance, "The biggest mistake in any competition, including surgery, is celebrating too early."
With that, he moved aside.
The hallway was wide, and standing to the side still allowed him to see the operating room. Mainly, Jeffery didn't want to be near Ruben.
He usually kept his emotions in check, but with Ruben, his dislike was almost palpable.
Ruben typically wouldn't stop him, but today seemed to be an exception.
"Jeffery, sticking to your principles won't get you anywhere. Being a doctor isn't just about treating patients. Didn't your paper fail to get published last week?"
Jeffery turned, his eyes cold, "So it was you."
Last week, Jeffery had submitted a paper about a rare condition he was treating. The patient had shown significant improvement after long-term treatment.
Because it was a rare condition, many in the medical field were struggling to find a cure. Jeffery had succeeded, gaining significant recognition.
Someone had tried to buy his treatment plan for a high price, in the eight-figure range.
But Jeffery refused, opting to publish his findings for free to help more people.
However, his paper was maliciously intercepted, with a flimsy excuse that it contained illegal information. Even someone as composed as Jeffery had been infuriated.
He had suspected Ruben and his mentor, Dr. Adams, were behind it!
"You guys should be thinking about helping patients, not hoarding everything for yourselves. And you want to turn me into one of you? Keep dreaming," Jeffery said with disdain.
Ruben's smile slowly faded.
He looked at Jeffery with disgust, "You know, what I hate most is your arrogant attitude. I was just trying to give you some advice, but if you don't appreciate it, there's nothing more to say."
"Anyway, if the surgery fails, the bet still stands..."
Before he could finish, the operating room light went off.
The sliding doors opened, and Lyra rushed out, ignoring everyone else, and threw herself at Jeffery. At that moment, he was the only person she saw.
Lyra's heart was pounding, her voice filled with suppressed joy, "Jeffery, I did it! The surgery was a success!"
Jeffery caught the almost-bouncing girl, holding her steady, his voice incredibly gentle, "Yes, you did great."
Those simple words filled Lyra with satisfaction.
Suddenly, all the hardship and exhaustion felt worth it.
This wasn't just an affirmation; for Lyra, it was a recognition of her abilities.
After so many setbacks and unpleasant experiences, she had started to doubt if she was truly capable of being a doctor.
Even she hadn't realized that self-doubt had been lurking in her heart.
But now, all that was in the past. The invisible self-doubt and darkness had vanished, and she was ready to embrace a new life!
"I have so much to tell you. During the surgery..." Lyra paused.
She had noticed Ruben.
Under his gaze, she realized how inappropriate her current position was, hugging Jeffery, who was still officially just her former superior.
Her face flushed, and she quickly stepped back, "I'm sorry, I got too excited!"
In the past, Ruben would have taken the opportunity to stir things up and enjoy their embarrassment.
But now, all he could think about was how Lyra had completed the surgery. How was it possible? How did she do it?
"How did you do it? Even my mentor wasn't confident about this surgery. How could a relatively unknown doctor like you, who has only been in the hospital for a few years, possibly succeed?"
Ruben grabbed her wrist, causing her pain.
"So what if I did? If reputation is so important, then why didn't your mentor try? Even if he wasn't 100% sure, he must have had at least a 50% or 30% chance, right? The truth is, he didn't dare."
Ruben glared at her, his eyes menacing, "How dare you talk about my mentor like that?"
Lyra was forced back a step by his intense gaze, but she quickly steeled herself.
Kindness was often mistaken for weakness!
These people were so brazen because they thought she was easy to bully. She couldn't back down; she had to show them she wasn't to be messed with!
