Chapter 376 The House on Fire
Hathaway's face turned red with anger. "When did this happen? Why didn't anyone tell me? They're already divorced. How dare Pearl mess with your relationship? Shameless! I'm going to find her. How dare she treat Haley like this? I'll fight her!"
Hathaway was furious when she heard about Haley's trouble.
Whenever Haley was bullied, Hathaway would do anything to get justice for her.
Haley quickly grabbed her. "Hathaway, this won't help. You'll just embarrass yourself."
"What can she do? She wants to marry Oscar, but she needs my approval. Haley, don't worry. If she makes things hard for you, I won't let her off. I'll go down with her if I have to, but I won't let you suffer!" Hathaway, blinded by anger, was ready to act.
As long as Pearl suffered, Hathaway was willing to pay any price.
Hathaway stormed out, determined to get justice for Haley, and no one could stop her.
Haley called out, "Hathaway."
But Hathaway was already gone.
Haley didn't chase after her. Watching Hathaway's fading figure, her tears had dried. She knew Hathaway would definitely cause trouble for Pearl for her sake.
She was just waiting to see the outcome.
As long as Hathaway went, Pearl's life wouldn't be easy.
Pearl had just been discharged from the hospital and returned home. With her pregnant belly, it was hard for her to move, so the servants carried her luggage while she walked slowly.
Oscar was swamped with work, and hadn't told her about Haley's release from prison. Pearl felt a bit resentful and wanted to hear his explanation.
She had just sat down when a servant reported, "Ms. Harris, Mrs. Brown is here."
Pearl hadn't seen her in a long time.
Since she left the Brown family, Hathaway thought she and Oscar had no future, so they hadn't met again.
Honestly, without the Brown family, her life was quite relaxed. But she and Oscar hadn't reconciled yet, and Hathaway showing up first was unusual.
Since she was Oscar's mother, security didn't interfere much.
"Pearl!" Hathaway came in, carrying two buckets.
Pearl looked at her, stayed calm, and greeted her, "What brings you here?"
Hathaway saw her pregnant belly. They hadn't seen each other for a while, and her belly was already big. She hadn't expected her to be pregnant. But Hathaway had more pressing matters. With a stern voice, she said, "So, you left the Brown family just to pull some tricks. You still haven't given up on my son. Now that your belly is so big, are you trying to use the child to win Oscar back?"
From the moment Hathaway arrived, she hadn't shown Pearl any kindness. Pearl, in turn, responded coldly, "Is this what you came here to say? At the very least, you are the child's grandmother. Can you speak with a bit more respect?"
"You bullied Haley, and you want me to be polite!" Hathaway said with disgust. "To tie Oscar down, who knows whose child this is. If you want to attach the Brown family name to this child, you better see if you're worthy!"
Pearl couldn't tolerate her insults any longer. "Watch your mouth. I let the child call you 'grandmother' out of respect for Oscar. If you don't want that, fine! This isn't the Brown family home. Please leave!"
Hathaway sneered. "Leave? You and Oscar are divorced. I'm his mother. You should be the one to get out!"
Pearl found her unreasonable and didn't want to argue further. "Escort her out!"
The servants moved to escort her out, but Hathaway struggled and pushed them away. "Do you know who I am? I'm Oscar's mother. He has to call me mom. How dare you push me?"
The servants hesitated, afraid to force her out.
Pearl said coldly, "Whenever something happens to Haley, you rush to defend her. You just want to make sure I know she's your daughter. You want to keep her close. But remember, you abandoned her once. Now that you want to make it up to her, consider if she even wants your affection!"
Hathaway was surprised. She thought it was still a secret, but since Pearl knew, she didn't hide it. "Haley is my daughter. I've sacrificed enough for the Brown family. Why should you slander her!"
"I don't slander anyone," Pearl said firmly. "If you want justice for her, go to the police, not here. Today, her reputation is ruined. Tomorrow, I'll have her in jail!"
She looked at the servants again and said more forcefully, "Escort her out!"
Seeing Pearl's authority, the servants quickly moved to throw Hathaway out.
Hathaway was agitated and couldn't stand being humiliated by Pearl.
"Pearl, you're nothing but trouble. Today, it's either you or me!"
Hathaway picked up the two buckets she brought, opened the lids, and poured them towards Pearl.
Pearl sensed something was wrong and smelled a strong odor. Her face turned pale with fear. She couldn't move quickly due to her condition, but a servant stepped in front of her.
"Quick, drag her away. It's gasoline!" The servant realized something was wrong and immediately called for help.
Hathaway, seeing she hadn't splashed Pearl, tried to chase after her. Fortunately, Pearl was already on alert and moved away, holding her belly.
At this moment, security arrived and restrained Hathaway.
Hathaway, realizing it was too late and losing her sanity, took out a lighter and ignited the gasoline.
The fire spread rapidly.
Hathaway was pinned down and couldn't move.
Seeing the fire, Hathaway felt a sense of relief, as if all the years of suffering in the Brown family were released at once. She laughed and said, "I'll burn you and your child. Let's see how you plan to marry Oscar then!"
Seeing the malice in Hathaway's eyes, Pearl hadn't expected Hathaway to be so ruthless, not even sparing the child in her belly. She felt a chill down her spine.
"Fire! Put out the fire!"
The fire spread quickly, but the villa's security measures were comprehensive. Not only did people use fire extinguishers, but the overhead fire suppression system was also activated.
Within a minute, the fire was out.
But Pearl was still in shock.
Hathaway, like a madwoman, shouted at Pearl, "I'll kill you. You want to ruin Haley, I'll ruin you."
Hathaway was completely insane!
Pearl, both angry and scared, knew she had to protect herself and wouldn't show mercy.
"Take her to the police station. Punish her as she deserves!"
Upon hearing this, Hathaway continued to struggle and shout, "I'm Oscar's mother. So what if I burn the house? I wanted to burn it. You can't do anything to me!"
She believed her status would protect her from criminal charges.
"Oscar!"
Oscar arrived, his face cold and his fists clenched tightly as he struggled to control his anger. His sharp eyes were fixed on Hathaway.
Seeing him, Hathaway thought Oscar would help her. "Oscar, you're back. Look, she wants to send me to the police station. She dares to send your mother to the police station. How ruthless she really is!"
